The three-phase full(6-pulse) bridge controlled rectifier is one of the most widely used types of solid-state converters in DC drive applications for higher performance. In most of the previous designs gate control circuits of the converter have been designed with analog method, whitch can be easily affected by noise. In this study microprocessor and pheripal LSIs are used for eliminating these problems and successful results have been obtained.
In this paper, the authors propose a current control system for three phase PWM AC/DC converter without the source voltage sensors. The sinusoidal input current and unity effective power factor are realised based on the estimated source voltage in the controller. The estimation of source voltage is performed based on Luenberger observer using actual currents. The estimated source voltage is used to accomplish unity power factor. The proposed method is proved by simulations.
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been receiving increased attentions in recent years. The new modular multilevel converter is a derivative topology from the traditional MMC in which the number of sub-modules (SMs) necessitated by each phase can be reduced by one. This paper presents a phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (PSC-PWM) for the new MMC with an optimal phase-shifted angle to suppress the harmonics of the output voltage. Further, the harmonic features when the capacitor voltage of the middle SM is selected as two different values are also investigated. Moreover, in order to avoid introducing an unnecessary dc offset current at the ac terminals of the new MMC, a novel capacitor voltage balancing scheme is proposed by adjusting the amplitude of the reference signals rather than the offset. Finally, the validity and effectiveness of the proposed modulation and balancing schemes have been verified by experimental results based on a three-phase prototype of the new MMC.

Among various Power converters, a variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) three-phase PWM inverter is regarded as most promising power converter due to its capabilities, which permits the control of voltage, frequency and harmonic contents in a single power stage employing only on DC source. As a modulating technique of the PWM inverter, the regular sampling technique has rendered possible the on-line computation and generation of PWM control waveforms with a reasonably high switching frequencies. In this paper, microprocessor based three-phase regular samping PWM inverter with real-time control algorithm and control circuits for driving three phase AC motor has been developed. Harmocic components of PWM waveform were analized theoretically in terms of Bessel function series and then calculated by digital computer and observed with spectrum analyzer.
Single-phase and three-phase AC to DC power converters are becoming frequently used for high voltage/high power applications such as telecommunications. They often require input/output transformer isolation for safety, a unity input power factor for minimum reactive power, free input harmonic currents fed back to the AC Power distribution system and, finally, high efficiency and high power density for minimum weight and volume. The proposed boost converter for power factor correction (PFC) provides an unity input power factor, low harmonic distortion and high efficiency along with reduced volume and weight. Single-phase 220VAC input/380VDC 1KW output prototype is constructed and experimental results will be verified with those of PSpice simulation.
A new type of topology with medium-frequency-transformer (MFT) isolation for medium voltage wind power generation systems is proposed in this paper. This type of converter is a high density power conversion system, with high performance features suitable for next generation wind power systems in either on-shore or off-shore applications. The proposed topology employs single-phase cascaded multi-level AC-AC converters on the grid side and three phase matrix converters on the generator side, which are interfaced by medium frequency transformers. This avoids DC-Link electrolytic capacitors and/or resonant L-C components in the power flow path thereby improving the power density and system reliability. Several configurations are given to fit different applications. The modulation and control strategy has been detailed. As two important part of the whole system, a novel single phase AC-AC converter topology with its reliable six-step switching technique and a novel symmetrical 11-segment modulation strategy for two stage matrix converter (TSMC) is proposed at the special situation of medium frequency chopping. The validity of the proposed concept has been verified by simulation results and experiment waveforms from a scaled down laboratory prototype.

The switching-mode power converter has been widely used because of its features of high efficiency and small weight and size. These features are brought by the ON-OFF operation of semiconductor switching devices. However, this switching operation causes the surge and EMI(Electromagnetic Interference) which deteriorate the reliability of the converter themselves and entire electronic systems. This problem on the surge and noise is one of the most serious difficulties in AC-to-DC converter. In the switching-mode power converter, the output voltage is generally controlled by varying the duty ratio of main switch. When a converter operates in steady state, duty ratio of the converter is kept constant. So the power of switching noise is concentrated in specific frequencies. Generally, to reduce the EMI and improve the immunity of converter system, the switching frequency of converter needs to be properly modulated during a rectified line period instead of being kept constant. Random Pulse Width Modulation (RPWM) is performed by adding a random perturbation to switching instant while output-voltage regulation of converter is performed. RPWM method for reducing conducted EMI in single switch three phase discontinuous conduction mode boost converter is presented. The more white noise is injected, the more conducted EMI is reduced. But output-voltage is not sufficiently regulated. This is the reason why carrier frequency selection topology is proposed. In the case of carrier frequency selection, output-voltage of steady state and transient state is fully regulated. A RPWM control method was proposed in order to smooth the switching noise spectrum and reduce it's level. Experimental results are verified by converter operating at 300V/1kW with 5%~30% white noise input. Spectrum analysis is performed on the Phase current and the CM noise voltage. The former is measured with Current Probe and the latter is achieved with LISN, which are connected to the spectrum analyzer respectively.
In this paper, a proposed approach to improve the power factor of three-phase rectifiers and to stabilize the output voltage against load change is presented. The elements of the given control strategy are small size, low cost, high performance, and simplicity. The proposed control strategy of switches is based on a prototype of three bi-directional switched consisting of four diodes and one IGBT. A control technique and operational procedure are also developed, both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results clearly verify the theoretical analysis from the prototype connected to grid unity.
In the end of a production line a new built power converter has to undergo a series of stress tests. This can be achieved by connecting it to a dynamometer consisting of a three-phase machine joined by a rigid shaft to a DC load machine. The latter is controlled to create some specific load characteristic needed for the test. In this paper a test method is proposed, in which no mechanical equipment is needed. The suggested test stand consists only of a converter to be tested and a simulator converter. Both devices are connected back-to-back on the AC-side via smoothing reactors. The simulator operates in real-time as an equivalent load circuit, so that the device under test will only notice the behaviour of a three-phase machine under consideration of the load.
This paper presents an investigation of a voltage and frequency controller for an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) driven. by a wind turbine and supplying 3-phase 4-wire loads to the isolated areas where a grid is not accessible. The control strategy is based on the indirect current control of the VSC (voltage source converter) using the frequency PI controller. The proposed controller consists of three single-phase IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Junction Transistor) based VSC, which are connected to each phase of the IAG through three single phase transformers and a battery at their DC link. The controller has the capability of controlling reactive and active powers to regulate the magnitude and frequency of the generated voltage, harmonic elimination, load balancing and neutral current compensation. The proposed isolated system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB using Simulink and PSB (Power System Block-set) toolboxes to verify the performance of the controller.
