  • Libraries are founded to ensure the intellectual freedom of citizens, and citizens have the right to confidentiality regarding their needs, information access, and information use. Protecting users' privacy is critical to safeguarding their freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of assembly. Libraries and librarians should seriously concern themselves with their users' privacy because protecting this privacy is part of their most important mission, and, in doing so, users can truly enjoy their intellectual freedom. This study extensively investigated and analyzed the possibility of privacy invasion that may occur in libraries. As a result, cases of potential invasion of privacy in libraries were summarized in the following three categories: violations occurring in the process of national or law agencies' enforcement operations; violations occurring in the process of routine library services such as circulation, reference, online searching etc.; and violations occurring by outsourcing library services.

  • Objectives : The objective of this paper is to review the healing processes employed in the traditional age and discover the unique features found in the Korean Medicine through categorizing and analyzing the distribution of patients, and the aspects and results of treatments as recorded in Gyeongbosinpyeon, a historical text thought to have been authored by a regional doctor active in Joseon during the mid- to late-19th century. Methods : A table is created to view all of the total of 141 medical records introduced in the Gyeongbosinpyeon, and 7 categories were created to each contain 2 to 3 medical records that have special images. The paper provides their translation texts along with the original texts, and analyzed their medical and social significances by comparing each medical record. Results : The clinical competence displayed by the doctor who had worked in Joseon during the 19th century was surprisingly high, and it seems its values are worthy of dissemination when compared with Yeogsimanpil that has been introduced to the world. There is a great significance in how the principle of holistic treatments, the fundamental aspect of Joseon's medical study, was adhered. Additionally, the parts that show the historical text's author's medical activities and their unique characteristics are also worthy of attention. Conclusions : Korean medicine possesses a remarkable text called Donguibogam, but clinical behaviors' successes are not guaranteed solely with textual knowledge. It can be witnessed that such texts of authority and such medical records that have recorded actual activities complement each other in order to improve the quality of Joseon's study of medicine.

  • To secure a higher percentage of fertility in hatching eggs and a higher percentage of hatchability of the fertile eggs should be of direct benefit to poultry breeder ana hatchery operators. This study was carried out to estimate the relationships of egg production and fertility in broiler breeder. The data analysed were the record of pullets (5 strains) of broiler breeder raised at Poultry Breeding Farm, Seoul National Univ. from 1982 to 1983. Since the purpose of the study was only to find out the relationships between egg Production and fertility, many other factors thought to be included in fertility were fixed as much as possible. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Mean figure of egg production rate and fertility from 30 weeks age to 60 Weeks of age to 60 weeks of age were 60.5-65.2 percent and 82.7-87.9 percent. 2. Correlation coefficients between egg Production rate and fertility were high and positive, except line K, and the coefficients have highly significant differences. 3. Regression coefficients of fertility on egg Production rate were 0.54-0.97, except line K. 4. Maximum fertility age estimated from the polynomial regression equation were 44-47 weeks. The results obtained in this study suggested that the selection of high performance strain in egg Production should improve the fertility.

  • Electrophoretic analysis was performed to determine the interspecific genetic relationships of the genus Raja collected in Korea waters. We confirmed 5 species [Raja (Okamejei) meerdervoortii Bleeker, R.(O).acutispina Ishiyama, R.(O) kenojei Muller et Henle, Raja (Dipturus) kwangtungensis Chu, and R.(D.) pulchra Liu] inhabting in Korea. As results of starch gel electrophoresis, 24 genetic loci were obtained from 13 enzymic and non-enzymic proteins, and allele frequencies of each locus were calculated . Even thought their various dorsal color patterns, the mean genetic similarity among 4 conspecific populations of R.(O) kenojei showed highly close genetic relationships (S=0.966) R.(O) kenojei and R.(D) kwangtungensis which belong to different subgenus , revealed subspecific level of differentiation (S=0.829). R. (Diptuuus ) kwangtungensis was genetically much closer to Raja(Okamejei) species than to Raja (Dipturus) species group. R.(O) acutispina and R.(D) kwangtungensis were unrecorded species to Korea.

  • We examined the strategies to stimulate the reflective thinking using science notebook for the improvement of problem solving ability which is one of the core skills for the future. The strategies we derived have four steps which are input, output, solving mission and reflection as my own mirror. We applied the strategies to the 6th grade class for autumn semester in order to examine the students learning process and the result. We could observe that students looked into their own learning and had a time to look back their activities in the class. We could also confirmed that science notebook would be effective to improve the problem solving as stimulating the reflective thinking. In addition, we could specify the strategy of using science notebook in the class. At a 'input' stage, students should be able to choose their own learning style as their preference and teacher need to give them proper feedback. Interaction with peers should be emphasized during the activities as 'question attack' and 'question defense' in 'output' stage and 'solving mission' stage. You should suggest the students various method to record their thought from looking back their classroom activities instead of mere writing. We also examine the students achievement from the students' notebook and Meta Cognitive Awareness test. As a result, students who had studied using science notebook showed statistically meaningful higher achievement than controlled students.

  • As homework, a total of 32 seventh grade science-gifted students were asked to observe the moon at daily intervals for one month duration. They were also asked to take the photos and to record relevant variables in a given format. The purpose of the task was to investigate what students thought, as they observed the moon. The results show that students paid attention mainly to the position of the moon relative to other variables such as the date in the lunar calendar, the observer's position on the earth, and the position of the sun. Overall students' response implied that students did not observe the lunar phase in relation with relevant variables. Some reponses from students show common misconceptions such as the cause of the lunar phase to reflect the shadow of the earth. However, some responses reveal students' idea that has been rarely reported in the previous researches. For example, some students drew the moon to revolve in the opposite direction. Significant number of students drew the sun's position to be due west before the full moon and due east after the full moon. Few students recognized the relation between the time of observation and observer's position on the earth. The results of current research suggest that not only the education but also the research needs to be expanded to consider informal environment such as the actual field conditions.

  • A food allergy is an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs reproducibly upon exposure to a given food. In those with food allergies that are thought to cause aggravation of eczema, food avoidance is important. The objective of this study was to research the nutritional status of patients with food allergies. A total of 225 subjects diagnosed with atopic dermatitis underwent a skin prick test as well as measurement of serum immunoglobulin E. Food challenge tests were conducted using seven food items: milk, eggs, wheat, soybeans, beef, pork, and chicken. At post-food challenge visits to the test clinic, participants completed a three-day dietary record, which included two week days and one weekend day, in order to evaluate energy intake and diet quality during the challenge. We analyzed nutrient intake based on differential food allergens. Subjects with a food allergy to milk showed lower intake of Ca, Zn, and vitamin B2, and subjects with a food allergy to egg showed lower intake of vitamin A, B1, B2, niacin, and cholesterol. Subjects with a food allergy to wheat and soybean showed lower intake of Ca, P, Fe, K, Zn, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and niacin; and subjects with a food allergy to beef, pork, and chicken showed lower intake of Fe and higher intake of K, vitamin A, B2. Subjects with atopic dermatitis were lacking in several nutrients, including vitamin A and vitamin C. A greater number of food allergies showed an association with a greater number of nutrient intake deficiencies. Allergen avoidance is the basic treatment for atopic dermatitis. However, when the allergen is food, excessive restriction can lead to nutrition deficiency. Findings of this study suggest the necessity for enhanced nutritional education in order to provide substitute foods for patients with food allergies who practice food restriction.
