  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate experimentally and theoretically the strength and deformation of K-joints in welded Warren-type square hollow structural section truss. There are 2 types in K-joints in K-joints having one compression bracing member and one tension bracing member. One type is KP-series that brae members are rotated to $45^{\circ}$, another type is KS-series that are not rotated. Principal parameters are the ratio of the chord width to thickness (D/T=33.3, 25, 16.7), the ratio of brace width to chord width(d/D=0.4, 0.5, 0.67, 0.83, 1.0) and the ratio of eccenticity to chord height (e/D=0.25, 0.125, 0, -0.125, -0.25, -0.375, -0.5). The important results obtained from the experiments are as follow ; The strength of K-joints increase proportionally as the D/T ratio decreases, and the d/D ratio increases. But the e/D ratio has no correlation with the strength of K-joints. Generally the strength and ductility ratio of KP-series increase more than a current type(KS-series) in full ${\beta}$range.

  • In this paper, vibration characteristics in terms of the airfoil cross-sectional shape was examined by using the EDISON co-rotational plane beam-transient analysis. Assuming aircraft wing as a cantilevered beam with a constant cross-sectional shape, natural frequencies of each airfoil shape was compared while varying airfoil maximum thickness and maximum camber length, using Fast Fourier Transformation(FFT). When the airfoil maximum thickness was varied, natural frequency showed peak value at 18% chord, and decreased afterwards. When the airfoil maximum camber length was varied, natural frequency either increased or decreased at 6% chord, while at 8% the natural frequency showed its maximum. Applying such trends to B-737 wing airfoil, an improved B-737_mod airfoil shape was obtained with regard to the vibration characteristics.

  • This thesis introduces a study conducted by ANSYS, Finite Element Analysis program, on dynamic behavior by thickness of a chord and a brace of a jacket typed marine structure. As load condition to work on offshore structures is getting much more various, it becomes more important to design the structures and operate them. In addition, stability is also required. As the result of this study, it was proved that wind and wave load gives more affection on frequency than on added mass in the Modal Analysis. Also, the chord and brace affect stiffness more than diagonal brace according to sensitivity analysis.

  • Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using SIMPLER method in the intrinsic curvilinear coordinates system to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect significantly the frequencies of the force oscillations as well as the mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces.

  • A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the unsteady lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed based on the SIMPLER method in the body-intrinsic coordinates system to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;and\;30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number are very important parameters to decide the lift and drag forces. All these parameters also affect significantly the frequencies of the unsteady force oscillations.

  • This paper is concerned with the viscous interaction between rotor and stator The viscous interaction is caused by wakes from upstream blades. The cascade was composed with five blades and cylinders were placed to make wakes and their location was about 50 percent of blade chord upstream. The location of cylinders were varied in the cascade axis with 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 percent of pitch length. The velocity distribution in the cascade passage were measured using single slanted hot-wire and the ones in the boundary layer using boundary probe. As a result, wakes decay more rapidly at suction surface and more slowly at pressure surface. And the measurement of momentum thickness of cascade shows that the momentum thickness is larger near the blade surface. From measurement of blade boundary layer, turbulent intensity is also larger near the blade surface because wakes collide the boundary layer And wakes make boundary layer thickness smaller and delay flow separation.

  • The paper presents the results of an experimental investigation conducted on welded tubular joints, that are employed in offshore platforms, to study the behaviour and strength of these joints under axial brace compression loading. The geometrical configuration of the joints tested were T and Y. The nominal diameter of the chord and brace members of the joint were 324 and 219 mm respectively. The chord thickness was 12 mm and the brace 8 mm. The tested joints are approximately quarter size when compared to the largest joints in the platforms built in a shallow water depth of 80 m in the Bombay High field. Some of the joints were actually fabricated by a leading offshore agency which firm is directly involved in the fabrication of prototype structures. Strength of the internally ring-stiffened joints was found to be almost twice that of the unstiffened joints of the same configuration and dimensions. Bending of the chord as a whole was observed to be the predominant mode of deformation of the internally ring-stiffened joints in contrast to ovaling and punching shear of the unstiffened joints. It was observed in this investigation that unstiffened joint was stiffer in ovaling mode than in bending and that midspan deflection of unstiffened joint was insignificant when compared to that of the internally ring stiffened joint. The measured midspan deflection of the unstiffened joint in this investigation and its relation with the applied axial load compares very well with that predicted for the brace axial displacement by energy method published in the literature. A comparison of the measured deflection and ovaling of the unstiffened joint was made with that published by the author elsewhere in which numerical prediction of both quantities have been made using ANSYS software package. The agreement was found to be quite good.

  • Truss members built-up with double angles back-to-back have monosymmetric cross-section and twisting always accompanies flexion upon the onset of buckling about the axis of symmetry. Approximate formulae for calculating the buckling capacity are presented in this paper for routine design purpose. For a member susceptible only to flexural buckling, its optimal cross-section should consist of slender plate elements so as to get larger radius of gyration. But, occurrence of twisting changes the situation owing to the weakness of thin plates in resisting torsion. Criteria for limiting the leg slenderness are discussed herein. Truss web members in compression are usually considered as hinged at both ends for out-of-plane buckling. In case one (or both) end of member is not supported laterally by bracing member, its adjoining members have to provide an elastic support of adequate stiffness in order not to underdesign the member. The stiffness provided by either compression or tension chords in different cases is analyzed, and the effect of initial crookedness of compression chord is taken into account. Formulae are presented to compute the required stiffness of chord member and to determine the effective length factor for inadequately constrained compressive diagonals.

  • Tubular joints have been widely used in offshore platforms and space structures due to their merits such as easy fabrication, aesthetic appearance and better static strength. For existing tubular joints, a grouted sleeve reinforced method was proposed in this paper. Experimental tests on five tubular T-joints reinforced with the grouted sleeve and two conventional tubular T-joints were conducted to investigate their mechanical behaviour. A constant axial compressive force was applied to the chord end to simulate the compressive state of the chord member during the tests. Then an axial compressive force was applied to the top end of the brace member until the collapse of the joint specimens occurred. The parameters investigated herein were the grout thickness, the sleeve length coefficient and the sleeve construction method. The failure mode, ultimate load, initial stiffness and deformability of these joint specimens were discussed. It was found that: (1) The grouted sleeve could change the failure mode of tubular T-joints. (2) The grouted sleeve was observed to provide strength enhancement up to 154.3%~172.7% for the corresponding un-reinforced joint. (3) The initial stiffness and deformability were also greatly improved by the grouted sleeve. (4) The sleeve length coefficient was a key parameter for the improved effect of the grouted sleeve reinforced method.
