  • Thick-walled cylinders, such as a cannon or nuclear reactor, are autofrettaged to induce advantageous residual stresses into pressure vessels and to increase operating pressure and the fatigue lifetimes. As the autofrettage level increases, the magnitude of compressive residual stress at the bore also increases. However, the Bauschinger effect reduces the compressive residual stresses as a result of prior tensile plastic strain, and decreases the beneficial autofrettage effect. The purpose of the present paper is to predict the accurate residual stress of SNCM8 high strength steel using the Kendall model which was adopted by ASME Code. The uniaxial Bauschinger effect test was performed to decide BEF, then this constant was used in calculation. There were some differences between theoretical solution and modified solution.

  • In this paper a thick cylindrical shell with varying thickness which is subjected to static non-uniform internal pressure is analyzed. At first, equilibrium equations of the shell have been derived by the energy principle and by considering the first order theory of Mirsky-Herrmann which includes transverse shear deformation. Then the governing equations which are, a system of differential equations with varying coefficients have been solved analytically with the boundary layer technique of the perturbation theory. In spite of complexity of modeling the conditions near the boundaries, the method of this paper is very capable of providing a closed form solution even near the boundaries. Displacement predictions are in a good agreement with the calculated finite elements and other analytical results. The convergence of solution is very fast and the amount of calculations is less than the Frobenius method.

  • To increase the performance of thick-walled cylinders recently their length is continually enlarged. For that reason it is important to reduce weight of the thick-walled cylinders. In this paper the FE models to predict and estimate effects on the composite tapes were created with MSC.Nastran/Patran v.2005. First of all a autofrettage method was applied to the 2D model of the AISI4340 cylinder reduced the thick. And then the comparison of the numerical results with analysis results showed and verified by using T300/5208, IM7/PETI5, IM7/8552 tapes. Those are predicted to the effects of the angle of the composite tapes and elastic modulus according to the composite properties.

As the autofrettage level increases, the magnitude of compressive residual stress at the bore also increases. The purpose of the present paper is to predict the accurate residual stress of SCM440 high strength steel using the Kendall model which was adopted by ASME Code. Hydraulic pressure process was applied in the inner part and thick-walled cylinders were autofrettaged up to 30% overstrain levels. Electro polishing on the surface of autofrettage specimen was performed to get more accurate residual stress. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction method. The autofrettage surface which was plastically deformed analyzed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Although there were some differences in measured residual stress and numerical results, it has a tendency to agree comparatively with each other.

  • This paper was utilized the STKM13C tubes for machine structural purposes model, inner radius was 100 mm and outer radios was 140 mm, axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element was used. Radial, tangential and shearing stress occured the maximum stresses(-20, 52 and 26 MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum stresses at the outer radius. of the hydraulic actuator cylinders for an industrial systems. But negative signs have meaning compressive stress and stress diminution ratio was about 0.15 MPa/mm And then coincidence between the simulation and exact results(Lame' equation) is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analytical by BEM are reliable.

  • Number of studies on the buckling of thin cylindrical pressure vessels, such as submarine pressure hull and pipe with a large ratio of diameter/thickness, have been carried out in the naval and ocean engineering. However, research about thick cylinder pressure vessel has not been active except for the specific application in nuclear area. There are not many papers for the estimation of buckling and ultimate load capacity of thick cylinders for the deep sea usage. Thus, it is important to understand the theoretical bases of the buckling and collapse process and the derivation process of such loads for the proper design and structural analysis. The objective of this study is to survey the collapse behavior, to analyse and clarify the derivation procedure and to estimate the ultimate collapse load for thick cylinder by analyzing relevant books and papers. It is found that the yielding begins at the internal surface of the thick cylinder and plasticity develops from the internal surface to the external surface to generate collapse. Also the initial imperfection of cylinder develops flattening and consequently accelerates buckling and finally ultimate collapse. By comparing the collapse loads of aluminum thick cylinder by applying equations herein, it is shown that the equations analyzed are appropriate to obtain collapse load for thick cylinder.

  • This paper presents a numerical solution for the thick cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) with a constant Poisson's ratio and an arbitrary Young's modulus. We define two fundamental solutions which are derived from an ordinary differential equation under two particular initial boundary conditions. In addition, for the single layer case, we can define the transfer matrix N. The matrix gives a relation between the values of stress and displacement at the interior and exterior points. By using the assumed boundary condition and the transfer matrix, we can obtain the final solution. The transfer matrix method also provides an effective way for the solution of multiply layered cylinder. Finally, a lot of numerical examples are present.

  • Two categories in the design of thick cylinders are suggested and their computer programs are developed; the one termed processing design to ensure the precise inner radius of the cylinder and the other, termd stress compensation design to reduce peak stresses in the cylinder wall. The processing design seeks suitable interference by the method of linear iteration to determine either the radius of the mandrel R or the inner radius ofthe chlinder R$\sub$1/. On the other hand, the stress compensation design seeks first the suitable m and which satisfies the design criteria .sigma.$\sub$actual/ < .sigma.$\sub$allowable/ and then tries to find the suitable interference for given m and .zeta. The design program developed here may be used either in the office at the planning stage of thick chlinders as machine elements of on the processing line to get precise final dimension of inner radius.

  • In order to perform a pressure chamber experiment with a circular cylindrical pressure vessel, the dimensions of the cylinder need to be determined in the range of the maximum externally applied pressure of the chamber to create the collapse process. In this study, the collapse load values from published chamber test results, finite element analysis and the theory of thick cylinders were thoroughly compared in a aluminum cylinder. In order to investigate the effect of collapse load according to the ovality during manufacturing, nonlinear buckling analysis was performed and the collapse load according to ovality was compared. Based on the results, the dimensions of the steel cylinder were determined for the future chamber collapse test.
