  • Since the power density of the VHTR(Very High Temperature Reactor) is lower, there is less possibility of core melt. VHTR has no risk of explosion caused by hydrogen generation when the loss of coolant accident occurs, which is another advantage. Along with safety benefit, it can be used as a process heat supplier near demand facilities because coolant temperature is very high enough to be used for industrial purpose. In this paper, we designed the primary system using VHTR and the secondary system providing electricity and process heat. Based on that 350 MW thermal reactor proposed by NGNP(Next Generation Nuclear Part), we developed conceptual model that the IHX(Intermediate Heat Exchanger) loop transports 300 MW thermal energy to the secondary system. In addition, we analyzed thermodynamic behavior and performed the efficiency analysis and optimization study depending on major parameters.

  • The formation of inclusion complexes between cyclodextrin(CD) and Congo red was studied by spectrophotometric methods at various temperatures. The cavity sizes are 0.49 nm, 0.62 nm for $\alpha$-and $\beta$-CD, respectively. Therefore, $\alpha$-CD was not found to form an inclusion complex with Congo red due to steric hinderance. In the $\beta$-CD use two $\beta$-CD molecules formed an inclusion complex with one molecule of Congo red, from the slope of the S-shaped curve increased. Two prominent isosbestic points appear at 346 nm and 478 nm. The formation constants were decreased with the increasing temperatures, due to low binding energy between $\beta$-CD and Congo red. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated from the plot of $lnK_f$ vs 1/T. The $\Delta$H, $\Delta$S and $\Delta$G were -50.73 kJ/mol, $-108.96J/K{\cdot}mol$ and -18.26 kJ/mol, respectively.

  • Zeolite (FZ), prepared from fly ash, was immobilized with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to fabricate PAN/FZ beads. The prepared PAN/FZ beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum ratio to prepare PAN/FZ beads was 0.3 g of PAN to 0.3 g of FZ. The diameter of the prepared PAN/FZ beads was about 3 mm. Sr and Cu ion adsorption experiments were conducted with PAN/FZ beads. A pseudo-second-order model fit the kinetic data for Sr and Cu ion adsorption by PAN/FZ beads well. The equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 96.5 mg/g and 74.6 mg/g for the Sr and Cu ions, respectively. Additionally, the values of thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) were determined. The positive values of ${\Delta}H^o$ revealed the endothermic nature of the adsorption process and the negative values of ${\Delta}G^o$ were indicative of the spontaneity of the adsorption process.

  • Zeolite (FZ) prepared using coal fly ash from an Ulsan industrial complex was immobilized with polysulfone (PS) to fabricate PS-FZ beads. The prepared PS-FZ beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum ratio for preparing PS-FZ beads was 1 g of PS to 2 g of FZ. The removal efficiencies of Sr and Cu ions by the PS-FZ beads increased as the solution pH increased and nearly reached a plateau at pH 4. A pseudo-second-order model morel fit the adsorption kinetics of both ions by the PS-FZ beads better than a pseudo-first-order model. The Langmuir isotherm model fit the equilibrium data well. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model were 46.73 mg/g and 62.54 mg/g for the Sr and Cu ions, respectively. Additionally, the values of thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) were determined. The results implied that the prepared PS-FZ beads could be interesting an alternative material for Sr and Cu ion removal.

  • The interaction of dioxouranium(VI) (uranyl) ion with nitrate ion has been studied by $^{17}O$ NMR spectroscopy. The $^{17}O$ resonance of uranyl oxygen atoms(uranyl oxygens hereafter) of $UO_2NO_3{^+}$ was at lower field than that of uranyl ion. The stability constants of $UO_2NO_3{^+}$ were obtained from the variation of $^{17}O$ chemical shifts with nitrate-ion concentration at 5, 15, 25, $35^{\circ}C$ and depend on the ionic strength. Thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature dependence of the stability constants were as follows : ${\Delta}H=-(27.2{\pm}1.7)kJ\;mol^{-1}$ and ${\Delta}S=-(110{\pm}7)JK^{-1}mol^{-1}$. There was a linear relationship between the enthalpy and entropy for 1:1 complex formation of the uranyl ion with a variety of anionic ligands.

  • The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, whose wavelength is from 120 nm down to 10 nm, and the energy from 10 eV up to 124 eV, is widely utilized such as in photoelectron spectroscopy, solar imaging, especially in lithography and soft x-ray microscopy. In this study, we have investigated the plasma diagnostics as well as the debris characteristics between the two types of dense plasma focusing devices with coaxial electrodes of Mather and hypocycloidal pinch (HCP), respectively. The EUV emission intensity, electron temperature and plasma density have been investigated in these cylindrical focused plasma along with the debris characteristics. An input voltage of 5 kV has been applied to the capacitor bank of 1.53 uF and the diode chamber has been filled with Ar gas at pressure ranged from 1 mTorr and 180 mTorr. The inner surface of the cathode was covered by polyacetal insulator. The central anode electrode has been made of tin. The wavelength of the EUV emission has been measured to be in the range of 6~16 nm by a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD). The visible emission has also been measured by the spectrometer with the wavelength range of 200~1,100 nm. The electron temperature and plasma density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Stark broadening methods, respectively, under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).

  • The interaction of monochlorophenol isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of monochlorophenol isomers into this micellar system have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^{\circ}_s$, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_s$, and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}_s$) have been calculated and analyzed from the dependence of $K_s$ values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^{\circ}_s$ and ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_s$ are all negative but the values of ${\Delta}S^{\circ}_s$ are all positive for the solubilizations of all isomers within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of monochlorophenol isomers by the same surfactant system have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate the solubilization sites of each isomer in the micellar system of TTAB.

  • $TiO_2$ fine powders were synthesized via hydrolysis reaction of titanium isopropoxide in isopropanol solvent and the reaction rates were studied by use of UV spectroscopic method. The reactions were controlled to proceed to pseudo-first-order reaction in the presence of excess water in isopropanol solvent. The rate constants which varied with temperature and concentration of water were calculated by Guggenheim method. Reactions using $D_2O$ were also carried out to determine the catalytic character of water. n value of water molecules in transition state and the thermodynamic parameters showed that the reaction proceeded by $S_N2$ mechanism. $TiO_2$ powders synthesized in this reaction were almost spheric forms and had average particle size of $0.3{\mu}m$ diameter.

  • Three activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using NaOH (N) as an activating agent. Hydrofluoric acid pre-leached rice husk was used as a precursor. After leaching, the precursor was washed with distilled water, dried, crushed, and then sieved; a size fraction of 0.3-0.5 mm was selected for carbonization in the absence of air at $600^{\circ}C$. The carbonization product (LC) was mixed with NaOH at ratios of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 (wt of LC: wt of NaOH) and the produced ACs after activation at $800^{\circ}C$ were designated NLC21, NLC31, and NLC41, respectively. Surface and textural properties were determined using nitrogen adsorption at $-196^{\circ}C$, scanning electron microscopy images, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. These ACs were used as adsorbents for lead(II) from aqueous solutions. The effects of the textural properties and the chemistry of the carbon surfaces were investigated and the impact of the operation conditions on the capacity for lead(II) sorption was also considered. Modification of NLC41 with $H_2O_2$ and $HNO_3$ gave two other adsorbents, $H_{NLC41}$ and $N_{NLC41}$ respectively. These two new samples exhibited the highest removal capacities for lead(II), i.e.117.5 and 128.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption data fitted the Langmuir isotherm and the kinetic adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters have been determined and they indicated a spontaneous endothermic process.

  • Near-IR spectra for $ν_{\alpha}$+ Amide Ⅱ combination band of thioamides, and very dilute thioamide-DMSO solution in CCl4 were recorded in the temperature range of $5^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. This combination band was resolved by the computer program into two Lorentzian-Gaussian product function which have been identified with monomeric thioamide and thioamide-DMSO 1 : 1 complex. Equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters for the thioamide-DMSO hydrogen bonding were elucidated by the analysis of conce ntration and temperature dependent spectra. The hydrogen bonding strength between thioacetamide (TA) and DMSO in $CCl_4$ is stronger than that between thiopropionamide (TPA) and DMSO in CCl4. The ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ for the TA-DMSO and TPA-DMSO 1 : 1 complex in CCl4 were -15.3 kJ${\cdot}$$mol^{-1}$ and -14.2 kj${\cdot}$$mol^{-1}$, respectively.
