This study investigates the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the damping capacity of the Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. Dislocation, ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ are formed, and the grain size is refined by deformation and thermo-mechanical treatment. With an increasing number cycles in the thermo-mechanical treatment, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increases and then decreases, whereas dislocation and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ increases, and the grain size is refined. In thermo-mechanical treated specimens with five cycles, more than 10 % of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ and less than 3 % of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ are attained. Damping capacity decreases by thermo-mechanical treatment and with an increasing number of cycles of thermo-mechanical treatment, and this result shows an opposite tendency for general metal with deformation induced martensite transformation. The damping capacity of the thermo-mechanical treated damping alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation greatly affect the formation of dislocation, grain refining and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ and then ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ formation by thermo-mechanical treatment.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were formed, and grain size was refined by thermo-mechanical treatment. With the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment, volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were increased, and grain size decreased. In 5-cycle number thermo-mechanical treated specimens, more than 10% of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite and less than 3% of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite were attained. Tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased with the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. Tensile properties of thermo-mechanical treated alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation was affected to formation of martensite by thermo-mechanical treatment, but was large affected to increasing of dislocation and grain refining.
The transient thermo-mechanical behavior of a simply-supported beam made of a functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of a moving heat source is investigated. The FGM consists of a ceramic part (on the top), which is the hot side of the beam as the heat source motion takes place along this side, and a metal part (in the bottom), which is considered the cold side. Grading is in the transverse direction, with the properties being temperature-dependent. The main steps of the thermo-elastic modeling included deriving the partial differential equations for the temperatures and deflections in time and space, transforming them into ordinary differential equations using Laplace transformation, and finally using the inverse Laplace transformation to find the solutions. The effects of different parameters on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the beam are investigated, such as the convection coefficient and the heat source intensity and speed. The results show that temperatures, and hence the deflections and stresses increase with less heat convection from the beam surface, higher heat source intensity and low speeds.
The thermo-mechanical characteristics of high temperature NITINOL shape memory alloy were evaluated using DSC with small samples and DMA with three-point bending specimens. The shape memory alloy of 54.4Ni/45.5Ti wt.% was used so that the phase transformation temperatures were in the range of 50~11$0^{\circ}C$. Two types of sample were tested in the experiments corresponding to as-received and annealed conditions. Simple beam bending theory was used to calculate the dynamic moduli of the shape memory alloy. According to the results, a large discrepancy in transformation temperatures was found between DSC and DMA techniques. Annealing treatment was found to suppress the R-phase transformation during cooling and the secondary plateau in the austenite transformation. Such a heat treatment was also significantly influenced to raise the transformation temperatures and the moduli of the shape memory alloy.
Recently, hot stamping process has been paid attention greatly by automobile makers in accordance with the fuel efficiency and environmental issues as well as crash safety issue. The hot-stamped parts, however, demand extreme mechanical properties such as tensile strength of over 1470 MPa or equivalently Vickers hardness of around 450. In this work, to meet the demand efficiently, a method to predict mechanical property of hot-stamped parts based on numerical phase transformation scheme has been proposed associated with the thermo-mechanical coupled finite element analysis. This work deals with various phase transformation equations and validates them to select appropriate model for 0.2C-0.1Si-1.4Mn-0.5Cr-0.01Mo-0.002B steel sheet. The authors show that an efficient method saving time and cost to develop hot-stamped automobile parts ensuring suitable mechanical properties such as Vickers hardness and strength.
Hot stamping, which is the hot pressing of special steel sheet using a cold die, can combine ease of shaping with high strength mechanical properties due to the hardening effect of rapid quenching. In this paper, a thermo-mechanical analysis of hot stamping using the finite element method in conjunction with phase transformations was performed in order to investigate the plastic deformation behavior, temperature history, and mechanical properties of the stamped car part. We also conducted a fully coupled thermo-mechanical analysis during the stamping and rapid quenching process to obtain the mechanical properties with the consideration of the effects of plastic deformation and phase transformation on the temperature histories at each point in the part. The finite element analysis could provide key information concerning the temperature histories and the sheet mechanical properties when the phase transformation is properly considered. Such an analysis can also be used to determine the effect of cyclic cooling on the tooling.
This study investigates the effects of operating conditions on the chattering of an automotive disk brake by experimental and computational methods. Design factors, which cause chattering in automobiles, have attracted great attentions for long time; but they are not well understood yet. For this study, we construct a brake dynamometer for measuring the disk surface temperature during chattering, and propose an efficient hybrid algorithm (combining FFT-FEA and traditional FEA program) for analyzing the thermo-elastic behavior of three-dimensional brake system. We successfully measure the judder in a brake system via the dynamometer and efficiently simulate the contact pressure variation by the hybrid algorithm. The three-dimensional simulation of thermo-mechanical interactions on the automotive brake, showing the transient thermo-elastic instability phenomenon, is presented for the first time in this academic community. We also find from the experimental study that the disk bulk temperature strongly influences the brake chattering in the automotive disk brakes.
In this study, an enhanced first-order shear deformation theory is proposed to efficiently and accurately predict the thermo-mechanical-viscoelastic coupled behavior of laminated composite structures. To this end, transverse shearstress and displacement fields are independently assumed, and the strain-energy relationship between these fields issystematically established using the mixed variational theorem (MVT). In MVT, the transverse shear stress fields are obtained from the third-order zigzag model, whereas the displacement fields of the conventional first-order model are considered to amplify the benefits of numerical efficiency. Additionally, a transverse displacement field with a smooth parabolic distribution is introduced to accurately predict the thermal behavior of composite structures. Furthermore, the concept of Laplace transformation is newly employed to simplify the viscoelastic problem, similar to the linear-elastic problem. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed theory, the numerical results obtained herein were compared with those available in the literature.

In this paper, a simple and efficient phenomenological macroscopic one-dimensional model is proposed which is able to simulate main features of shape memory alloys (SMAs) particularly ferro-elasticity effect. The constitutive model is developed within the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes to simulate the one-dimensional behavior of SMAs under uniaxial simple tension-compression as well as pure torsion+/- loadings. Various functions including linear, cosine and exponential functions are introduced in a unified framework for the martensite transformation kinetics and an analytical description of constitutive equations is presented. The presented model can be used to reproduce primary aspects of SMAs including transformation/orientation of martensite phase, shape memory effect, pseudo-elasticity and in particular ferro-elasticity. Experimental results available in the open literature for uniaxial tension, torsion and bending tests are simulated to validate the present SMA model in capturing the main mechanical characteristics. Due to simplicity and accuracy, it is expected the present SMA model will be instrumental toward an accurate analysis of SMA components in various engineering structures particularly when the ferro-elasticity is obvious.
In this a set of constitutive equation relevant to the analysis of thermo-elasto-plastic materials with phase transformation during quenching process was presented on the basis of continuum thermo-dynamic. In calculating the transient thermal stresses, temperature between coolant and specimen(SM45C) surface was determined from the heat transfer coefficient. A calculation was made for specimen with 40mm in diameter quenched in coolant from $820^{\circ}C$ and the results are as follow. Stresses at starting point of transformation always show the maximum tensile value. Reverse of stresses takes place after completion of transformation of inner part at specimen.
