  • In the present research, Ficus religiosa Bark (FRB) is used as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal Cr (VI) ions. This Ficus religiosa Bark was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier transform infrared Spectroscopy, Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer and the results showed that activated adsorbent have high adsorption capacity and withstand even in high temperature. Batch and Continuous experiments were conducted to determine the effect of various parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration. The biosorption followed pseudo first order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms of Cr (VI) on Ficus religiosa fitted well with the Temkin model. In Batch study, maximum biosorption capacity of Cr (VI) was found to be 37.97 mg g-1 (at optimal pH of 2, adsorbent dosage of 0.3 grams and concentration of Cr (VI) is100 mg L-1). The Continuous mode of study shows that 97% of Cr (VI) ion removal at a flow rate of 15 ml min-1. From the results, selected Ficus religiosa Bark has the higher adsorption capacity for the removal of Cr (VI) ions from wastewater.

  • Purpose: To identify and evaluate the risk of chemical fire causative substances by using thermal analysis methods (DSC, TGA) for the hazards and physical property changes that occur when newly used biofuels are mixed with existing fuels It is to use it for identification and evaluation of the cause of fire by securing data related to the method and the hazards of the material according to it. Method: The research method used in this experiment is the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC: Difference in heat flux) through quantitative information on the caloric change from the location, shape, number, and area of peaks. flux) was measured, and the weight change caused by decomposition heat at a specific temperature was continuously measured by performing thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA: Thermo- gravimetric Analyzer). Result: First, in the heat flux graph, the boiling point of the material and the intrinsic characteristic value of the material or the energy required for decomposition can be checked. Second, as the content of biodiesel increased, many peaks were identified. Third, it was confirmed through analysis that substances with low expected boiling points were contained. Conclusion: It was shown that the physical risk of the material can be evaluated by using the risk of biodiesel, which is currently used as a new energy source, through various physical and chemical analysis techniques (DSC + TGA).In addition, it is expected that the comparison of differences between test methods and the accumulation and utilization of know-how on experiments in this study will be helpful in future studies on physical properties of hazardous materials and risk assessment of materials.

  • We fabricated rod-like poly(lactic acid)(PLA) specimens through applying various methods of equal-channel angular extrusion(ECAE) process and investigated the change of thermal and mechanical properties of specimens before and after each ECAE process. Combining three re-injection routes(A, BC, and C) and three pass counts(1, 2 and 4) allowed us to fabricate 7 different PLA specimens. Thermal properties of each specimen were measured by both differential scanning calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric analyzer. Shear strains of each specimen with respect to applied loads were measured by indentation hardness tester. Field emmision scanning electron microscopy was used to observe internal microstructure of cross-section of each specimen. The observed microstructures qualitatively supported the explanation of hardness test results. Among 7 specimens, PLA-P2A showed the biggest shear strain probably due to its dense microstructure.

  • This paper describes the evaluation of kinetic parameters for pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil. The non-isothermal pyrolysis of residual oil was carried out with TGA (Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer) at heating rate of 2, 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C/min$ up to $800^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. The first order and nth order pyrolysis models were used to fit the experimental data, and the nth order model was turned out to follow the experimental data more precisely than the first order model. For carbon char oxidation experiment, TGA and four heating rates used in pyrolysis experiment were also adapted. The kinetic parameters for the residual carbon char particle were obtained with three char oxidation model, that is, volume reaction, grain and random pore model. Among them, the random pore model described the char oxidation behaviour quite well, compared to other two models. The non-linear regression method was used to obtain kinetic parameters for both pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil.

  • This study investigates fire-retardant performances and combustion/thermal characteristics of fire-retardant treated wood by comparing them with those of fire-retardant untreated wood from the expreimental resutls of cone calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric(TG) analyzer. Hazardousness of combustion product gases for fire-retardant treated wood and untreasted wood were also observed from the results of internal finish material incombustibility test according to the Korea standard code of KS F 2271. In this study, we also tried to improve the fire retardant performance of wood by applying fire-retardant chemical composites, and to secure the fire safety performance in buildings. Red pine (Pinus densiflora) was selected as a test specimen because it is mostly used as a building material in Korea. Fire retardant chemical composites (FRCs) were prepared by mixing boron, phosphorous, and nitrogen species and treated by press-impregnation method. Water-based FRCs were composed of 3% boric acid($H_3BO_3$), 3% borax decahydrate($Na_2B_4O_7$), 8% ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$), diammonium phosphate ($(NH_4)_2HPO_4$) varied from 10-30% and potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) varied from 10-30%. From the test results of cone calorimeter, TG analysis and gas hazard assessments, newly proposed were the optimal composition and production methods of FRCs which can sufficiently meet fire-retardant level 3 based on Korea law of construction. Thus, the FRCs, developed in this study, are anticipated to contribute to the improvement of fire safety and widespread of usage in wood as building materials.

  • Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate whiskers ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH) were prepared using hydrothermal reaction with magnesium oxide (MgO) and magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) as the starting materials. The effects of the molar ratio of $MgSO_4$/MgO and amount of $NH_4OH$ were studied. As a result, 513 MHSH whiskers co-existed with hexagonal plate $Mg(OH)_2$ at low concentration of $SO_4^{2-}$. The molar ratio of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$/MgO was 7:1, uniform 513 MHSH whiskers were formed without impurity such as $Mg(OH)_2$. Appropriate amount of $NH_4OH$ has affected to formation of high quality MHSH. Their morphologies and structures were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA).

  • To obtain ceramic films, the sol-gel coating technique has been broadly used with heat treatment, but crack formation tend to occur during heat treatment in thick sol-gel films. We prepared PZT thin films by sol-gel method with single-step spin coating process. The PZT solution have been synthesized using lead acetate ($Pb(CH_3COO)_2$), zirconium acetylacetonate ($Zr(OC_3H_7^n)_4$), and titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) 75wt% in isopropanol ($Ti(OC_3H_7^i)_2(OC_3H_7^n)_2$) as starting materials and n-propanol was selected as a solvent. The poly(vynilpyrrolidone) (PVP) was added with 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 molar ratios to control viscosity of solution. We investigated influence of the viscosity on thickness, microstructure, and electrical properties of final PZT films. Thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimeter (TGA/DSC) was carried out from room temperature to $800^{\circ}C$ in order to measure pyrolysis temperature. Structural characteristics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ferroelectric and dielectric properties were measured by RT66A (Radiant) and impedance analyzer (Agilent), respectively. The thicknesses of PZT films depended on incorporation of an excess amount of PVP. Finally, we obtained PZT films of good quality without crack formation via single-step spin coating.

  • Torrefaction is considered as a promising pre-treatment for thermochemical utilization of biomass. Torrefaction temperature and time are the critical operation parameters. In this study, investigated were the effects of reaction temperature and time on product composition of torrefaction. scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) results were also compared for the effects of the operating parameters. SEM images showed that the pores were observed at the temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Rapid decreases in weight were observed the temperature between 200 and$400^{\circ}C$. Higher heating value of the torrefied biomass was over 5,000 kcal/kg at the temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes. Energy density, which is defined as the ratio of the energy yield over the mass yield was 1.36 at the temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes. The energy density was higher up to 1.6 at the temperature of $280^{\circ}C$, which indicates greater loss in mass. The major components of the gas produced in the torrefaction were $CO_2$ and CO, with traces of methane. The total amount of gas was 31.54 l/kg and the calorific value of the gas was $1,164.4Kcal/Nm^3$ at the temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ for 30 minute reaction time. Based on the results of this study, the temperature of effective torrefaction is about $250^{\circ}C$ for 30 to 45 minutes of reaction time. Considering the heating value, it is desirable to utilize the gas for efficient process of torrefaction.

  • Catalytic oxidation of toluene on the manganese oxide catalysts and manganese-cerium oxide catalysts was investigated. The catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermo gravimetric analyzer(TGA), toluene-temperature program reduction(Toluene-TPR). We found that the optimal manganese content was 18.2 wt.% and the optimal cerium content was 10.0 wt.% at catalytic oxidation of toluene. It is shown that ceria improves the activity of manganese oxide phases. From the XRD results, it was estimated that $MnO_2$ phase was active site in the monometallic and bimetallic catalysts. From the TGA and Toluene-TPR results, it show that ceria improves the mobility of the lattice oxygen, adequate oxidation state of the active phase, reduction ability at low temperature, and re-oxidation of the active site.
