  • The thermal degradation of ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds in the presence of transition metal chloride catalysts has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reaction of transition metal chloride catalysts (cobalt chloride, ferric chloride, nickel chloride and zinc chloride) and ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds has been found to occur during the thermal degradation of the compounds. In a nitrogen atmosphere, char formation is observed, and $3\~13\%$of the reaction product is non-volatile at $600^{circ}$. The resulting enhancement of char formation in a nitrogen atmosphere has been explained as a catalytic crosslinking effect of transition metal chloride catalysts. On the other hand, transition metal chloride catalyzed char formation of ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds in air was unsuccessful due to the oxidative degradation of the char at a higher temperature.

  • The thermal degradation characteristics of high molecular components obtained from pyrolysis of mixed waste plastics have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gas chromatography spectrometry (GC-MS). The kinetics of thermal degradation has been studied by a conventional nonisothermal thermogravimetric technique at several heating rates between 10 and $50^{\circ}C/min$. The dynamic thermogravimetric analysis curve and its derivative have been analyzed using a variety of analytical methods reported in the literature to obtain information on the kinetic parameters such as activation energies and reaction orders. The yields of liquid products have been monitored by batch pyrolysis reactor under various reaction temperatures and reaction times. And the characteristic of liquid products with the increase in reaction temperature has been performed by GC-MS.

  • The thermal degradation of ABS in the presence of iron-based metal catalysts has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reaction of iron-based metal catalysts (ferric nitrate nonahydrate, ammonium ferric sulfate dodecahydrate, iron sulfate hydrate, ammonium ferric oxalate, iron(II) acetate, iron(II) acetylacetonate and ferric chloride) with ABS has been found to occur during the thermal degradation of ABS. In a nitrogen atmosphere, char formation was observed, and at $600^{\circ}C$ approximately 3~23 wt% of the reaction product was non-volatile char. The resulting enhancement of char formation in a nitrogen atmosphere has been primarily due to the catalytic crosslinking effect of iron-based metal catalysts. On the other hand, char formation of ABS in air at high temperature by iron-based metal catalyst was unsuccessful due to the oxidative degradation of the char.

  • In this paper, the degradation evaluation method of VLC (Visible Light Communication) wireless module after high dose rate gamma-ray irradiation using the thermal infrared camera is proposed. First, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module during the condition of normal operation is monitored by thermal infrared camera. By the image processing technique, the trends of the intensity of the heat emitted by the active devices are calculated and stored. The feature of the blob area including the area of the active devices in the thermal infrared image is extracted and stored. The feature used in this paper is the mean value of the gray levels in the blob area. The same VLC module has been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of about 4.0 kGy/h during 72 hours up to a total dose of 288 kGy. And then, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module after high dose gamma ray irradiation is observed by thermal infrared camera. The high dose gamma-ray induced degradation of the active devices embedded in the VLC module was evaluated by comparing the mean value of the blob area to the one of the same blob area of the VLC module before the gamma ray irradiation.

  • Three kinds of thermal stabilizers for nylon 4 were synthesized to incorporate both hindered amine groups and methylene units with various lengths. It is expected that the hindered amine groups play a role in the capture of degradation-triggering species. Considering sequence rules, hydrogen bonding formed between nylon 4 and the stabilizers is optimized to alter the lengths of the methylene units in the stabilizers. As a result, it was found that a tetramethylene unit in the stabilizer is an optimal length for hydrogen bonding in terms of isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Considering the slight and often negligible improvement of thermal stability of nylon 4 containing commercially-available nylon 6 stabilizers, retardation of thermal degradation has been substantially improved upon.

  • In this study, disk type of thermal barrier coating system for gas turbine blade was isothermally aged in the furnace changing exposure time and temperature. For each aging condition, bond tests for three samples were conducted for evaluating degradation of adhesive or cohesive strength of thermal barrier coating system. For as-sprayed condition, the location of fracture in the bond test was in the middle of epoxy which have bond strength of 57 MPa. As specimens are degraded by thermal aging, bond strength gradually decreased and the location of failure was also changed from within top coat at the earlier stage of thermal aging to the interface between top coat and TGO at the later stage due to the delamination in the coating.

  • Mechanical and electrical performance of anode-supported SOFC single cells were analyzed after thermal cyclic operation. The experiments of thermal cyclic cell-operation were carried out four times and performance of each cell was measured at different temperatures of 650, 700, and $750^{\circ}C$, respectively. As increasing the number of thermal cycle test, single cells showed poor I-V characteristics and lower 4-point bending strength. The anode polarization was also measured by AC-impedance analysis. The observation of the microstructure of the anodes in single cells proved that the average particle size of Ni decreased and the porosity of anode increased. It is thought that the thermal cycle caused the degradation of performance of single cells by reducing the density of three-phase boundary region.

  • The application of infrared heating in the hot press forming of the thermoplastic composites is conducive to productivity with high-speed heating. However, high energy, high forming temperature, and high-speed heating derived from infrared heating can cause material degradation and deteriorate properties such as re-melting performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to optimize the process conditions of the hot press forming suitable for carbon fiber reinforced polyetherketoneketone(CF/PEKK) composites that are actively researched and developed as high-performance aviation materials. Specifically, the degradation mechanisms and properties that may occur in infrared high-speed heating were evaluated through morphological and thermal characteristics analysis and mechanical performance tests. The degradation mechanism was analyzed through morphological investigation of the crystal structure of PEKK. As a result, the size of the spherulite decreased as the degradation progressed, and finally, the spherulite disappeared. In thermal characteristics, the melting temperature, crystallization temperature and heat of crystallization tend to decrease as degradation progresses, and the crystal structure disappeared under long-term exposure at 460℃. In addition, the low bonding strength was observed on the degraded surface, and the bonding surfaces of PEKK did not melt intermittently. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the CF/PEKK composite material degraded at 420℃ in the infrared high-speed heating. Furthermore, the spherulite experienced morphological changes and the re-melting properties of thermoplastic materials were degraded.

  • Fretting is a kind of surface degradation mechanism observed in mechanical components and structures. The fretting damage decreases in 50-70% of the plain fatigue strength. This may be observed in the fossil power plant and the nuclear power plant used in special environments and various loading conditions. The thermal degradation of material is observed when the heat resisting steel is exposed for long period time at the high temperature. In the present study, the degraded 1Cr-0.5Mo steel used for long period time at high temperature (about 515$^{\circ}C$) and artificially reheat-treated materials are prepared. These materials are used for evaluating an effect of thermal aging on the fretting fatigue behavior. Through the experiment, it is found that the fretting fatigue endurance limit of the reheat-treated 1Cr-0.5Mo steel decreased about 46% from the non-fretting fatigue endurance limit, while the fretting fatigue endurance limit of the degraded 1Cr-0.5Mo steel decreased about 53% from the non-fretting fatigue endurance limit. The maximum value of fatigue endurance limit difference is observed as 57%(244 MPa) between the fretting fatigue of degraded material and non-fretting fatigue of reheat-treated material. These results can be a basic data to a structural integrity evaluation of heat resisting steel considered to thermal degradation effect.

  • Coolant rubber hoses for automobile radiators can be degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under the thermal and mechanical loadings. In this study, test analysis was carried out for evaluating the degradation and failure mechanisms of coolant hose materials. Two kinds of EPDM rubber materials applicable to the hoses were adopted: commonly-used ethylene-propylene diene monomer(EPDM) rubbers and EPDM rubbers with high resistance against electro-chemical degradation (ECD). An increase of surface hardness and a large reduction of failure strain were shown due to the formation of oxidation layer for the specimens which had been kept in a high temperature air chamber. Coolant ageing effects took place only by an amount of pure thermal degradation. The specimens degraded by ECD test showed a swelling behavior and a considerable increase in weight on account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin and interior of the rubber specimens. The ECD induced material softening as well as drastic reduction in strength and failure strain. However EPDM rubbers designed for high resistance against ECD revealed a large improvement in reduction of failure strain and weight. This study finally established a procedure for reliability analysis and evaluation of the degradation and failure mechanisms of EPDM rubbers used in coolant hoses for automobile radiators.
