In finite element analysis of mechanical behavior of weld, typical process is first to obtain a finite element model containing residual stress by conducting welding analysis and then to examine the computational specimen for various external loading. The numerical specimen with residual stress has irregular boundary lines since one usually begins the welding analysis from a body having regular straight boundary lines and large thermal contraction takes place during cooling of weld metal. We notice that these numerical weld specimens are different from the real weld specimens as the real specimens are usually cut from a bigger weld part and consequently have straight boundaries neglecting elastic relaxation associated with the cutting. In this paper, an iterative finite element method is described to obtain a weld specimen which is bounded by straight lines. The stress distributions of two types of weld specimen, one with regular and the other with irregular boundaries, are compared to check the effect of the boundary shape. Results show that the stress distribution can be different when large plastic deformation is induced by the application of external loading. In case of elastic small deformation, the difference turns out almost negligible.
A viscoelastic finite element analysis is presented to investigate residual stresses occurred in a laminated cylindrical shell during cure. An incremental viscoelastic constitutive equation that can describe stress relaxation during the cure is derived as a recursive formula which can be used conveniently for a numerical analysis. The finite element analysis program is developed on the basis of a 3-D degenerated shell element and the first order shear deformation theory, and is verified by comparing with an one dimensional exact solution. Viscoelastic effect on the residual stresses in the laminated shell during the cure is investigated by performing both the viscoelastic and linear elastic analyses considering thermal deformation and chemical shrinkage simultaneously. The results show that there is big difference between viscoelastic stresses and linear elastic stresses. The effect of cooling rates and cooling paths on the residual stresses is also examined.
Using LSM (laser scanning method) , the radius of curvature due to thermal deformation in polyimide film coated on Si substrate is measured. Since the polyimide film shows viscoelastic behavior, i.e., the modulus and deformation of the film vary with time and temperature, we estimate the relaxation modulus and the residual stresses of the polyimide film by measuring the radius of curvature and subsequently by performing viscoelastic analysis. The residual stresses relax by an amount of 10% at 100$^{\circ}C$ and 20% at 150$^{\circ}C$ for two hours.

Metal thin films such as aluminum have been used as interconnects in semiconductor device. Recently, these materials are applied to structural materials in microsensors and microactuators. In this study, we evaluate deformation and strength behavior of aluminum alloy film. Three layer model for thermal deformation of multilayered thin film material is introduced and applied to Si/Al(1%Si)/$SiO_2$ system. Based on beam bending theory and concept of bending strain. elastic and elastic/plastic thermal deformation behaviors of multilayered materials can be estimated. In the case of plastic deformation of ductile layer, strain rate equations based on deformation mechanism map are employed for describe the stress relaxation effect. To experimentally examine deformation of multilayered thin film materials, in-situ laser scanning method is used to measure curvature of specimens during heating and cooling. The thickness of $SiO_2$ layer is varied to estimate third-layer effect of thermal deformation of metal films, and its effect on deformation behavior are discussed.

Single-crystalline Bi nanowires have motivated many researchers to investigate novel quasi-one-dimensional phenomena such as the wire-boundary scattering effect and quantum confinement effects due to their electron effective mass (~0.001 me). Single crystalline Bi nanowires were found to grow on as-sputtered films after thermal annealing at $270^{\circ}C$. This was facilitated by relaxation of stress between the film and the thermally oxidized Si substrate that originated from a mismatch of the thermal expansion. However, the method is known to produce relatively lower density of nanowires than that of other nanowire growth methods for device applications. In order to increase density of nanowire, we propose a method for enhancing compressive stress which is a driving force for nanowire growth. In this work, we report that the compressive stress can be controlled by modifying a substrate structure. A combination of photolithography and a reactive ion etching technique was used to fabricate patterns on a Si substrate. It was found that the nanowire density of a Bi film grown on $100{\mu}m{\times}100{\mu}m$ pattern Si substrate increased over seven times higher than that of a Bi sample grown on a normal substrate. Our results show that density of nanowire can be enhanced by sidewall effect in optimized proper pattern sizes for the Bi nanowire growth.

Room and high temperature deformation behaviors of Cu-Zr-Ti-Pd bulk metallic glasses produced by copper mold casting were investigated. The addition of Pd was shown to enhance the glass forming ability and thermal stability of Cu-Zr-Ti base bulk metallic glass. The compressive strength of $Cu_{55}Zr_{30}Ti_{10}Pd_5$ bulk metallic glass was 2230 MPa with 1.8 plastic strain. The stress overshoot and yield drop phenomenon were observed below $487^{\circ}C$ and a drastic decrease in the flow stress was observed at $487^{\circ}C$. The stress overshoot is thought to be associated with stress-induced structural relaxation.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of restraint (DOR) of longitudinal steel at continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) against environmental loadings. METHODS : To measure the longitudinal steel strain, 3-electrical resistance and self-temperature compensation gauges were installed to CRCP test section (thickness = 250mm, steel ratio = 0.7%) and continuously measured 10 min. intervals during 259 days. In order to properly analyze the steel strains first, temperature compensation process has been conducted. Secondly, measured steel strains were divided into 12 phases with different events such as before paving, during concrete hardening, and after first cracking, etc. RESULTS : Thermal strain rate (TSR) concept is defined as the linear strain variations with temperature changes and restraints rate of longitudinal steel against environmental loadings (especially thermal loading) with different cases is defined as degree of restraint(DOR). New concept of DOR could be indirect indicator of crack width behaviors of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : Before paving, DOR of longitudinal steel is almost same at the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel ($12.44m/m/^{\circ}C$) because of no restraint boundary condition. After concrete pouring, DOR is gradually changed into -1 due to concrete stiffness developing with hydration. After first cracking at crack induced area, values of DOR are around -3~-5. The negative DOR stands for the crack width behavior instead of steel strain behavior. During winter season, DOR reached to -5.77 as the highest, but spring this values gradually reduced as -1.7 as the lowest. Based on this observation, we can presume crack width decreased over time within the time frame of this study. This finding is not consistent with the current theory on crack width variations over time, so further study is necessary to identify the causes of crack width reducing. One of the reasons could be related to concrete stress re-distribution and stress relaxation.
This study is devoted to the problems of thermal and shrinkage stresses in order to avoid cracking at early ages. The early-age damage induced by volume change has great influence on the long-term structural performance of the concrete structures such as its durability and serviceability To solve this complex problem, the computer programs for analysis of thermal and shrinkage stresses were developed. In these procedures, numerous material models are needed and the realistic numerical models have been developed and validated by comparison with relevant experimental results in order to solve practical problems. A framework has been established for formulation of material models and analysis with 3-D finite element method. After the analysis of the temperature, moisture and degree of hydration field in hardening concrete structure, the stress development is determined by incremental structural formulation derived from the principle of virtual work. In this study, the stress development is related to thermal and shrinkage deformation, and resulting stress relaxation due to the effect of early-age creep. From the experimental and numerical results it is found that the early-age creep p)ays important role in evaluating the accurate stress state. The developed analysis program can be efficiently utilized as a useful tool to evaluate the thermal and shrinkage stresses and to find measures for avoiding detrimental cracking of concrete structures at early ages.
