The welding residual stresses produced by welding frequently cause a crack and promote stress corrosion etc. in heat affected zone contained with external load and weakness of material. For the purpose pof relaxation of welding residual stress, post welding heat teratment(PWHT) is widely used. In this paper, the computer program which is based on Thermal-Elasto-plastic-creep theory for plane deformation on developed by finite element method (F.E.M) and verified its propriety by experimental measurement and also by using the developed computer program. The mechanical behavior of butt welding joint is clairfied during PWHT.

Isothermal and thermal-mechanical fatigue characteristics of 12Cr heat resisting steel used for high temperature applications were investigated including hold time effects. Isothermal low cycle fatigue test at $600^{\circ}C$ and in-phase, out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue test at 350 to $600^{\circ}C$ were conducted using smooth cylindrical hollow specimen under strain-control with total strain ranges from 0.006 to 0.015. Regardless of thermal-mechanical and isothermal fatigue tests, cyclic softening behavior was observed and much more pronounced in the thermal-mechanical fatigue tests with hold times due to the stress relaxation during the hold time. The phase difference between temperature and strain in thermal-mechanical fatigue tests resulted in significantly shorter fatigue life for out-of-phase compared to in-phase. The differences in fatigue lives were dependent upon the magnitudes of plastic strain ranges and mean stresses. During the hold time in the strain-controlled fatigue tests, the increase in the plastic strain range and the stress relaxation were observed. It appeared that the increase in plastic strain range per cycle and the introduction of creep damage made important contributions to the reduction of thermal-mechanical fatigue life with hold time, and the life reduction tendency was more remarkable in the in-phase than in the out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue. Isothermal fatigue tests performed under the combination of fast and slow strain rates at $600^{\circ}C$ showed that the fatigue life decreased as the strain rate and frequency decreased, especially for the low strain ranges.
Thermal stress and elastic creeping stress analysis was conducted by finite element method to simulate start-up process of a boiler header of 500MW standard fossil power plant. Start-up temperature and operating pressure history were simplified from the real field data and they were used for the thermal stress analysis. Two kinds of thermal stress analysis were considered. In the first case only temperature increase was considered and in the second case both of temperature and operating pressure histories were considered. In the first analysis peak stress was occurred during the temperature increase from the room temperature. Hence cracking or fracture may occur at the temperature far below the operating maximum temperature. In the results of the second analysis von Mises stress appeared to be higher after the second temperature increase. This is due to internal pressure increase not due to the thermal stress. When the stress components of radial(r), hoop($\theta$) and longitudinal(z) stress were investigated, compression hoop stress was occurred at inner surface of the stub tube when the temperature increased from room temperature to elevated temperature. Then it was changed to tension hoop stress and increased because of the operating pressure. It was expected that frequent start-up and shut-down operations could cause thermal fatigue damage and cracking at the stub tube hole in the header. Elastic-creeping analysis was also carried out to investigate the stress relaxation due to creep and stabilized stress after considerable elapsed time. The results could be used for assessing the creep damage and the residual life of the boiler header during the long-tenn service.
The residual stress changes on thermo-mechanical loading in the interface region of the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC)/Thermally Grown Oxide (TGO)/Bond Coat (BC) were calculated on the TBC-coated superalloys using a Finite Element Method (FEM). It was found that the residual stress of the interface boundary was dependent upon mainly the oxide formation and the swelling rate of the oxide by creep relaxation. During an oxide swelling, the relaxation of residual stress which is due to creep deformation increased the TBC's life. In the case of the fine grain size of TGO scale, the TBC stresses piled up by oxide swelling could be relaxed by diffusional creep effect of TGO.

Thermal elastic-plastic analysis was performed to assess the initial residual stress distribution of welded joints considering temperature dependent material properties. The test model was the idealized boxing fillet specimen, frequently appeared in the joints of longitudinal and transverse members of ship structure. Residual stress relaxations due to external loads were analyzed by subsequent elastic-plastic analysis considering loading and unloading steps, and the characteristics of residual stress relaxations were discussed with the levels of external loads. Additionally, to define the fatigue life of crack initiation and propagation, the S-N data for each crack length were appraised.

In early-age concrete, volumetric deformations due to thermal expansion and moisture transfer are restrained by various boundary conditions, and then restraint stresses occur in proportion to developed stiffness. With increase of the age, these stresses are gradually relieved by significant relaxation behavior of early-age concrete. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the stress relaxation in order to analyze the behavior of early-age concrete more accurately. In this paper, we propose a unified algorithm which combines a relaxation model with hydration model, heat conduction model, micropore structure formation model, moisture diffusion model and mechanical properties development model and develop a finite element program based on the algorithm. The program is applied to evaluate stress development if a temperature-stress test machine (TSTM) specimen and a massive concrete structure, and then validity of the program is discussed and evaluated.

In this paper, the estimation method of C(t)-integral for combined mechanical and thermal loads is proposed for elastic-plastic-creep material via 3-dimensional FE analyses. Plasticity induced by initial loading makes relaxation rate different from those produced elastically. Moreover, the interactions between mechanical and thermal loads make the relaxation rate different from those produced under mechanical load alone. To quantify C(t)-integral for combined mechanical and thermal loads, the simplified formula are developed by modifying redistribution time in existing work done by Ainsworth et al..
The present investigation is to study the plane problem in initially stressed thermoelastic half-space with voids due to thermal source. Lord-Shulman (Lord and Shulman 1967) theory of thermoelasticity with one relaxation time has been used to investigate the problem. A particular type of thermal source has been taken as an application of the approach. Finite element technique has been used to solve the problem. The components of displacement, stress, temperature change and volume fraction field are computed numerically. The resulting quantities are depicted graphically for different values of initial stress parameter. The relaxation time and the initial stress parameter have a significant effect on all distributions.
In this study, we developed a semi-analytical approach for the numerical analysis of residual stress in oxide scales formed on hot-rolled steels. The oxide scale, formed during the hot rolling process, experiences complex interactions due to thermal and mechanical influences, significantly affecting the material's integrity and performance. Our research focuses on integrating various stress components such as thermal stress, growth stress, and creep behavior to predict the residual stress within the oxide layer. The semi-analytical method combines analytical expressions for each stress component with numerical integration to account for their cumulative effects. Validation through instrumented indentation tests confirms the reliability of our model, which considers thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) differences, scale growth, and creep-induced stress relaxation. Our findings indicate that thermal stress resulting from CTE differences significantly impacts the overall residual stress, with growth stress contributing a compressive component during cooling, and creep behavior playing a minor role in stress relaxation. This comprehensive approach enhances the accuracy of residual stress prediction, facilitating the optimization of material design and processing conditions for hot-rolled steel products.
Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. And it is well known that volume expansion due to phase transformation could influence in the case of welding of high tensile strength steels on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. In this study, we investigated the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress through experiment. And three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis is conducted to reproduce the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress. Also we carried out the analysis of welding residual stress in welds of similar or dissimilar steels considering the effect of residual stress relaxation due to phase transformation.
