  • A new microemitter (microcombustor) configuration for a micro thermophotovoltaic system in which thermal energy is directly converted into electrical energy through thermal radiation was investigated experimentally and computationally. The microemitter as a thermal heat source was designed for a few watt power-generating micro thermophotovoltaic system. In order to satisfy the primary requirements for designing the microemitter, i.e., stable burning in the small confinement and maximum heat transfer through the emitting walls but uniform distribution of temperature along the walls, the present microemitter is cylindrical with an annular-type shield for heat recirculation to apply for the excessive enthalpy concept. Results show that the heat recirculation substantially improves the performance of the microemitter: the observed and predicted thermal radiation from the microemitter walls indicated that heat generated in the microemitter is uniformly emitted.

  • To reduce the fast neutron fluence which deteriorates the RPV integrity, additional shields were assumed to be installed at the outer core structures of the Kori Unit 1 reactor, and its reduction effects were examined. Full scope Monte Carlo simulation with MCNP4A code was made to estimate the fast neutron fluence at the RPV. An optimized design option was found from various choices in geometry and material for shield structure. It was expected that magnitude of fast neutron fluence would be reduced by 39% at the circumferential weld of the RPV, resulting in extension of plant lifetime by 4.6 EFPYs based on the criterion of PTS requirement It was investigated that the nuclear characteristics and thermal hydraulic factors at the internal core were only negligibly influenced by the installation of additional shield structure.

  • We have investigated volume resistivity and thermal properties showed by changing the content of carbon black which is the component parts of semiconducting shield in underground power transmission cable. Specimens were made of sheet form with the nine of specimens for measurement. Volume resistivity of specimens was measured by volume resistivity meter after 10 minutes in the preheated oven of both 25$\pm$1[$^{\circ}C$] and 90$\pm$1[$^{\circ}C$]. And specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were measured by Nano Flash Diffusivity and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). The measurement temperature ranges of specific heat using the BSC was from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 60[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity using Nano Flash Diffusivity were both 25[$^{\circ}C$] and 55[$^{\circ}C$]. Volume resistivity was high according to an increment of the content of carbon black from these experimental results. And specific heat was decreased, while thermal conductivity was increased by an increment of the content of carbon black. And both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature.

  • An analysis has been performed for active thermal control of the KOMPSAT monopropellant rocket engine assembly, i.e., dual thruster module(DTM). The main efforts of this work have been directed at determining proper heater sizes for propellant valves and catalyst beds necessary to maintain their temperatures within specified temperature ranges under KOMPSAT environment and operational conditions. The TAS incorporated with TRASYS thermal radiation analyzer was used to establish a complete heat transfer model which allows to predict the DTM temperature as a function of time. The thermal analysis has been performed in transient mode to verify the appropriate power for catalyst bed heaters necessary to increase catalyst bed temperature to the required value within a specified period of time. Similar analysis has been executed to validate the heater power for the thermostatically controlled primary and redundant heater circuits used to prevent hydrazine freezing, i.e., single fault. Moreover the effect of the radiative property of thermal control coating of heat shield was examined. Thruster firing condition was also simulated for the heat soakback condition. As a consequence, all thermal analysis results for DTM satisfactorily met the thermal requirements for the KOMPSAT DTM under the worst case average voltage, i.e. 25 volt.

  • Aircraft ice protection systems are applied to the window shield, engine inlet, and wings to protect the aircraft from ice that may form on the surfaces of aircraft and sensors during operation. Icing on the aircraft can cause serious accidents by degrading the flight stability of the aircraft and by malfunctions in sensors such as the air data probe. Various types of ice protection systems have been developed for aircraft in the past. The electro-thermal type ice protection system contributes greatly to improving energy efficiency in a relatively simple structure, and has established itself as one of most popular ice protection systems for modern aircraft. In this review, two representative ice protection systems-hot-air and electro-thermal types-were intensively analyzed, and the prospect of ice protection systems was discussed based on the current status and application cases.

  • Gd-157 material has very large neutron capture cross section in the thermal region. So it is very useful to shield material for thermal neutrons. Futhermore, in the neutron capture experiment and calculation, the neutron absorption and scattering are very important. Especially these effects are conspicuous in the resonance energy region and below the thermal energy region. In the case of very narrow resonance, the effect of scattering is to be more considerable factor. In the present study, we obtained energy dependent neutron absorption ratios of natural indium in energy region from 0.003 to 100 keV by MCNP-4B Code. The coefficients for neutron absorption was calculated for circular type and 1 mm thickness. In the lower energy region, neutron absorption is larger than higher region, because of large capture cross section (1/v). Furthermore it seems very different neutron absorption in the large resonance energy region. These results are very useful to decide the thickness of sample and shielding materials.

  • We report the status of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer (Cold TAS) and thermal neutron triple-axis spectrometer (Thermal TAS) installed at HANARO. Cold TAS, whose specifications are standard across the world, is in the final phase of commissioning. Proper instrument operation was confirmed through a feasibility study of phonon measurements and data analyses with resolution convolution. In contrast, Thermal TAS is in the initial phase of commissioning, and improvement of the monochromator drum is now in progress from the viewpoint of radiation shielding. In addition, we report recent activities in the development of neutron basic elements, that is, film-coated Si-wafer collimators, which are promising for use in triple-axis spectroscopy, particularly in Cold TAS.

  • We have evaluated thermal stability of a $BaAl_2Si_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$ $(BAS:Eu^{2+})$, which have polymorph property such as hexagonal, monoclinic structure depending upon firing temperature. When both polymorph $BAS:Eu^{2+}$ were baked in air at 500 $^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of $monoclinic-BAS:Eu^{2+}$ was maintained of the initial intensity. However, the PL intensity of $hexagonal-BAS:Eu^{2+}$ decreased significantly, corresponding to about 34 %. From analyses of Rietveld refinement, the difference of thermal stability of both $BAS:Eu^{2+}$ can be ascribed to both crystal structure of host materials and the average interatomic distances between $Eu^{2+}$ ion and oxygen their crystal structure which plays a key role of shield for Eu2+ ions against oxidation atmosphere.
