  • Transient thermal response of five types of underwear(cotton jersey, wool jersey, nylon jersey, cotton mesh and polyester mesh) for a protective coverall is evaluated using a sweating thermal manikin. Experimental protocol for transient thermal response of the sweating thermal manikin was also proposed. As results, it was found that steady state thermal response from sweating thermal manikin was not sensitive enough to evaluate thermal comfort of the experimental garments. However, when half time is used as an index of the heat flux change in transient thermal response, difference was found among underwear materials. Half time of cotton was the shortest and heat transfer of cotton was the fastest followed by polyester mesh, cotton jersey, nylon jersey and wool jersey. Dynamic thermal response of wool underwear was quite different from that of cotton underwear. Wool shows quite less heat flow at the initial stage, however, moisture permeability of wool was higher than cotton at the later stage. It was difficult to distinguish surface temperature difference visually using thermogram taken right before the completion of dry and wet test in steady state thermal response.

  • In this paper, thermal response analysis of a temperature controlled three-axis accelerometer for high temperature environments with integrated micro-heaters and temperature sensors is investigated with finite element method (FEM) program, ANSYS and infrared thermal measurement systems. And availability to application fields from a viewpoint about short thermal response time is discussed. In this paper, the time of three-axis accelerometer for high temperatures becoming $300^{\circ}C$ by integrated micro-heaters and temperature sensors to reduce thermal drift characteristics was analyzed as a thermal response time of this device. The simulated thermal response time (time until SOI piezoresistors actually becomes $300^{\circ}C$) of three-axis accelerometer for high temperatures with ANSYS is about 0.6s, and measured result with infrared temperature measurement systems is about 0.64s. Experimental results using infrared thermal measurement systems agreed well with these theoretical results.

  • The transmission performance of TSV considering the effect of electronic-thermal coupling is an new challenge in three dimension integrated circuit. This paper presents the thermal equivalent circuit (TEC) model of the TSV, and discussed the thermal equivalent parameters for TSV. Si layer is equivalent to transmission line according to its thermal characteristic. Thermal transient response (TTR) of TSV considering electronic-thermal coupling effects are proposed, iteration flow electronic-thermal coupling for TSV is analyzed. Furthermore, the influences of TTR are investigated with the non-coupling and considering coupling for TSV. Finally, the relationship among temperature, thickness of $SiO_2$, radius of via and frequency of excitation source are addressed, which are verified by the simulation.

  • The Performance of U-tube ground heat exchanger for geothermal heat Pump systems depends on the thermal properties of the soil, as well as grout or backfill materials in the borehole. In-situ tests provide a means of estimating some of these properties. In this study, in-situ thermal response tests were completed on two vertical boreholes, 130 m deep with 62 mm diameter high density polyethylene U-tubes. The tests were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over a $17\~18$ hour period for each vertical boreholes. By monitoring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop and heat load, overall thermal conductivity values of grout/soil formation were determined. Two parameter estimation models for evaluation of thermal response test data were compared when applied on the same temperature response data. One model is based on line-source theory and the other is a numerical one-dimensional finite difference model. The average thermal conductivity deviation between measured data and these models is of the magnitude $1\%$ to $5\%$.

  • The present study performs an experimental measurement on transient thermal response of an air-conditioned space by a variable air volume (VAV) system with a PI(pro-portional-integral) control logic. A thermal chamber with a PI controlled VAV unit is constructed to verify the previously suggested stratified multi-zone model. The effects of thermal parameters and control parameters such as supply air temperature and PI control factor are investigated by implementing the thermal chamber test. The experimental results obtained show that transient behavior of the air-conditioned space-temperature is in good accordance with the simulation results of the stratified thermal model.

  • A numerical study is performed to predict the effect of operating conditions on the thermal response of electronic assemblies during infrared reflow soldering. The multimode heat transfer within the reflow oven as well as within the electronic assembly is simulated, and the predictions illustrate the detailed thermal responses. Parametric study is performed to determine the thermal response of electronic assemblies to various conditions such as conveyor speed, exhaust velocity, and component emissivity. The predictions of the detailed electronic assembly thermal response can be used in selecting the oven operating conditions to ensure proper soldering and minimization of thermally-induced electronic assembly stresses.

  • This paper deals with the optimization of blade stiffened composite panels. The main objective of the research is to make response surfaces for the constraints. The response surface for warping thermal deformation was previously made for a fixed dimension composite structure. In this study, the dimensions of the blade stiffener were treated as design variables. This meant that a new response surface technique was required for the constraints. For the response surfaces, the lamination parameters, linear thermal expansions and dimensions of the structures were used as variables. A genetic algorithm was adopted as an optimizer, and an optimal result, which satisfied two constraints, was obtained. As a result, a new response surface was obtained, for predicting warping thermal deformation.

  • Environmental chamber (EC) is an experimental facility used to analyze the characteristics of thermal response of testing objects by the artificial control of weather conditions. The EC in KIER can simulate the weather conditions by the control of temperature, humidity, and solar radiation. A two-storied testing building is located inside of EC. For the exact thermal response analysis of testing building, monthly or yearly scheduled operations are necessary. Although this long term operation gives the exact experimental data, it requires a high operational cost, long duration, and lots of manpower. Therefore it is necessary to perform the shortened experiments without sacrificing the validity of the obtained results. Since the characteristics of thermal response from the shortened experiments are different from the full time results, the analytical method to analyze the thermal response from the shortened experiments to estimate a full times results is developed in this study. The thermal response of testing building is performed using commercial software TRNSYS.

  • Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.
