KEPRI has studied planar type SOFC stacks using anode-supported single cells and kW class co-generation systems for residential power generation. A 1kW class SOFC system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP part and a water reservoir. A hot box part contains a SOFC stack made up of 48 cells with $10{\times}10cm^2$ area and ferritic stainless steel interconnectors, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor and heat exchangers. Thermal management and insulation system were especially designed for self-sustainable operation. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap and system control units. When a 1kW class SOFC system was operated at $750^{\circ}C$ with hydrogen, the stack power was 1.2kW at 30 A and 1.6kW at 50A. Turning off an electric furnace, the SOFC system was operated using hydrogen and city gas without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about 1.3kW with hydrogen and 1.2kW with city gas respectively. The system also recuperated heat of about 1.1kW by making hot water. Recently KEPRI developed stacks using $15{\times}15cm^2$ cells and tested them. KEPRI will develop a 5 kW class CHP system using $15{\times}15cm^2$ stacks by 2010.
A reactor pressure vessel, which contains fuel assemblies and reactor vessel internals, has the thermal stress resulting from the cool-down and heat-up of the vessel wall in combination with the pressure stress from system pressure resulting in large stresses. The combination of the pressure stress and thermal stress along with a decrease in fracture toughness may cause through-wall propagation of a relatively small crack. Therefore, it is necessary to define the relations between operating pressure and temperature during cool-down and heat-up. In this study, theory of fracture mechanics for a pressure/temperature limit curve is investigated and a numerical procedure for generating it is developed. Plant-specific limit curves for the Kori unit 1 plant, the oldest nuclear power plant in Korea, have been obtained for several cooling and heating rates and their results are discussed.

Indonesia has a very short supply of electricity. As a solution to this problem, plans for construction of thermal power plants are increasing. Thermal power plant require the cooling water system to cool the overheated engine and equipment that accompany power generation, and the circulation water pump chamber among the cooling water system are generally designed according to the ANSI (1998) standard. In this study, the design criterion $20^{\circ}$ for the spreading angle of the ANSI (1998) of the layout of the circulating water pump chamber can not be satisfied on the K-coal thermal power plant site condition in Indonesia. Therefore, 3-D numerical model experiment was carried out to obtain a hydraulically stable flow and stable structure. The Flow-3D model was used as numerical model. In order to examine the applicability of the Flow-3D model, the flow study results around the rectangular structure of Rodi (1997) and the numerical analysis results were compared around the rectangular structures. The longitudinal velocity distribution derived from numerical analysis show good agreement. In order to satisfy the design velocity in the circulating water pump chamber, a rectangular baffle favoring velocity reduction was applied. When the approach velocity into the circulating water pump chamber was occurred 1.5 m/s ~ 2.5 m/s, the angle of the separation flow on the baffle was occurred about $15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$. By placing the baffle below the separation flow angle downstream, the design velocity of less than 0.5 m/s was satisfied at inlet bay.

An exhausted heat recovery system for a small gas engine cogeneration plant was investigated. The system was designed and built in a 300 kW class cogeneration demonstrative system. The basic performance was tested depending on load variation, and installed to a field site as a bottoming heat and power supply system. The exhaust gas heat exchangers (EGHXs) in shell-and-tube type and shell-and-plate type were tested. The entire efficiency of the cogeneration system was estimated between 85 to 90% under the 100% load condition, of which trend appears higher in summer due to the less thermal loss than in winter. Power generation efficiency and thermal efficiency was measured in a range of 31~33% and 54~57%, respectively.
The renewable energy source is considered as a good measure to cope with the global warming problem and the fossil energy exhaustion. The construction of electric power plant such as an offshore wind farm is rapidly increasing and this trend is expected to be continued during this century. The bulky and long distance power transmission media is essential to support and promote the sustainable expansion of renewable energy source. DC power cable is generally considered as the best solution and the demand for DC electric power has been rapidly increasing. Especially, the high temperature superconducting (HTS) DC cable system begins to make a mark because of its advantages of huge power transmission capacity, low transmission loss and other environmental friendly aspects. Technical contents of DC HTS cable system are very similar to those of AC HTS cable system. However the DC HTS cable can be operated near its critical current if the heat generation is insignificant, while the operating current of AC HTS cable is generally selected at about 50~70% of the critical current because of AC loss. We chose the specifications of the cable core of 'Tres Amigas' project as an example for our study and investigated the heat generation when the DC HTS cable operated near the critical current by some electric and thermal analyses. In this paper, we listed some technical issues on the design of the DC HTS cable core and described the process of the cable core design. And the results of examination on the current capacity, heat generation, harmonic loss and current distribution properties of the DC HTS cable are introduced.
Development of biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel for commercial uses is a recent phenomenon. However, the growth of ethanol and biodiesel has been impressive during the period 2000-2007yr. Globally, production of biodiesel stands around 8.3 billion liters. Europe leads the world in biodiesel production with 80% share of the global biodiesel production total. Today biodiesel fuels have been in commercial use in many countries and recently the world-wide biodiesel market has experienced considerable growth, which is partly due to various tax concession programs and other financial incentives. In Korea, biodiesel has already been used for transportation fuel, but not used for power generation fuel yet. Korean government has a strategy for renewable energy propagation, especially the goal of power generation amount by renewable energy is 3% of total power production by 2012. This paper focuses on the estimation study for effect of using biodiesel as power generation fuel. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of thermal power plant, gas turbine and distributed power generation system. As the increase of biodiesel fuel, I look forward to environment-friendly power generation and the strategy of Renewable Portfolio Standards(RPS).

As consumption of energy is increasing rapidly, energy saving is emphasized in nowadays. Thermal power plant occupies a large proportion in various type of power plant. Major causes of decreased power generation efficiency on thermal power stations is deposition of fly ash. Soot Blower is a facility to remove the ash which is deposited outside of tube by steam blowing on boiler. Residual stream which caused by lance tube in soot blower cannot be discharged steam effectively in lance tube causes reducing the thickness of lance tube. On the contrary, increasing discharge ratio of steam, lance tube cannot sustain proper pressure to remove ash on tube. This study suggests increasing discharge ratio of steam with proper pressure to remove ash on tube by optimization on shape of lance tube nozzle. To optimize shape of nozzle, discharge ratio and maximum blowing pressure on nozzle is selected as object functions. Diameter of nozzle, distance between nozzles, angle of nozzle and gap between nozzle is selected as design parameters. Then the design of experiment (DOE) with an orthogonal array is performed to analyze the effect of design parameters. And grey relational analysis and analysis of mean (ANOM) is performed to optimize shape of lance tube.
To solve the difficulty in obtaining transmission routes and substation sites. increase the transmission capacity between generation sites and load centers. and enhance the stability of the power system. we have constructed and operated the 765kV double circuit transmission line(hereunder T/L) from the Dangjin thermal power plant and the Uljin nuclear power plant to the metropolitan. It makes it possible for us to accumulate know-how of the 765kV system that is the highest operating system level in Asia. As the second 765kV project, we are going to construct the 765kV single circuit T/L between Ansung and Gap yung. Because of the different electrical and mechanical characteristics. we are in need of different design technology. This paper presents the optimal design of 765kV single circuit transmission line after due consideration about the arrangement of conductors. the shape of a tower, insulation, etc.

The results of radioecological monitoring of the cooling pond Beloyarsk NPP (Russia) have been presented. The influence of waste technological waters of thermal and fast NPP reactors on the content of artificial radionuclides in surface waters and bottom sediments of the Beloyarsk reservoir has been studied. The long-term dynamics of the specific activity of 60Co, 90Sr, 137Cs and 3H in the main components of the freshwater ecosystem at different distances from the source of radionuclide discharge has been estimated. Critical radionuclides (60Co and 137Cs), routes of their entry and periods of maximum discharge of radioisotopes into the cooling pond have been determined. It is shown that the technology of electricity generation at Beloyarsk NPP, based on fast reactors, has a much smaller effect on the flow of artificial radionuclides into the freshwater ecosystem of the reservoir. During the entire period of monitoring studies, the decrease in the specific activity of radionuclides from NPP origin in surface waters was 4.3-74.5 times, in bottom sediments 10-505 times. The maximum discharge of artificial radionuclides into the reservoir was noted during the period of restoration and decontamination work aimed at eliminating emergencies at the AMB thermal reactors of the first stage of the Beloyarsk NPP.
Aqueous solution of sodium glycinate was checked as a suitable $CO_2$ absorbent from the flu gas in the thermal power plant. For this purpose, solubility, vapor pressure, latent heat of vaporization and thermal conductivity were determined for pure and aqueous solution of sodium glycinate. The solubility of sodium glycinate in the solvent, 25 g of $H_2O$, was increased with increasing the temperature and their relation was represented as a first order equation of y = 0.3471x + 20.993. The vapor pressure for 10 wt% to 60 wt% of aqueous sodium glycinate solution were determined and the latent heat of vaporization of each aqueous solution was calculated from measured vapor pressure using Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Besides, thermal conductivity of sodium glycinate powder was also determined and it was $1.0933kcal/m{\cdot}hr{\cdot}^{\circ}C$.
