  • The antioxidant activities of hot water extracts from fresh, red and black garlic processed in low temperatures were compared. The chromaticity value of browning garlic was between that of fresh and black garlic. Red garlic was similar in browning intensity to fresh garlic. Also, total phenol, flavonoids, total pyruvate and thiosulfate contents were similar between fresh and black garlic. DPPH, ABTs, NO radical scavenging activity and reducing power of red garlic were significantly higher than fresh garlic, but lower than those of black garlic. $\alpha$-Glucosidase inhibitory activity in red garlic was similar to that in black garlic. Antioxidant activities of red garlic were higher than fresh garlic but lower than black garlic, and it was confirmed that antioxidant activity by production of browning material through the thermal process was the main parameter of the biological activity in the aged red garlic.

  • This paper describes the preliminary study on the development of multi-stage membrane demonstration plant for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas stream being emitted from LNG boiler in thermal power generation plant. The prerequisite requirement is to design and develop the membrane process producing a $99\%\;CO_2$ with $90\%$ recovery from LNG flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3$/day. Asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes and membrane modules developed in this laboratory[1] were used in this study. Using the permeation data for the hollow fiber membranes, modelling on the membrane module and multi-stage membrane process was done to meet the requirement condition of the process design. The effects of the operating pressure of feed and permeate side and feed concentration on $CO_2$ purity and recovery were investigated experimentally with the developed hollow fiber modules. These experimental results matched well with theoretical modelling results.

  • A condensation heat transfer model is very important for the safety analysis of nuclear power plants. Especially, condensation under the presence of noncondensable gases (NCGs) is an important issue in nuclear safety because the presence of even a small quantity of NCGs in the vapor largely reduces the condensation rate. In this study, the condensation heat transfer model of the severe accident analysis code MELCOR 1.8.6 has been assessed using a set of condensation experiments performed under the thermal-hydraulic conditions similar to those inside a containment during design-basis accidents or severe accidents. Experiment conditions are categorized into 4 types according to the shape of the condensation surface: vertical flat plates, outer surface of vertical pipes, inner surface of vertical pipes, the inner surface of horizontal pipes. The results of the calculations show that the MELCOR code generally under-predicts the condensation heat transfer except the condensation on inner surface of vertical pipes.

  • Dynamics of the river plume is a very complicated non-linear problem with the free boundary changing in time and space. Mixing with the ambient water through the boundary makes the problem more complicated. In this paper we reduced 3-dimensional problem into 1-dimensional one by using the integral analysis method. Basic equations have been integrated over the lateral and vertical variations. For these integrations we adopted the well-established assumption that the flow-axis component of plume velocity and the density difference of the plume with the ambient water have Gaussian distributions in directions which are perpendicular to the flow-axis of the plume. We also used the result of our previous study on the lateral spreading velocity of the plume derived under the same assumption. And entrainment was included as a mixing process. The resultant 1-dimensional equations were solved by Runge-Kutta numerical method. Consequently, comparatively easy method of numerical analysis is presented for the 3-dimensional river plume. The method can also be used for the analysis of the thermal plume of cooling water of power plants.

  • The outdoor coal storage sheds of thermal power plants are being converted to indoor coal storage sheds worldwide because of the environmental pollution problems in the surrounding areas. On the other hand, indoor coal storage sheds are causing problems, such as indoor coal scattering and harmful gas generation. In this study, the ventilation method of indoor coal storage sheds was analyzed in terms of the internal flow characteristics and ventilation according to the outside wind velocity and direction. CFD analysis was performed based on the actual flow measurement information inside the indoor coal storage sheds. A comparison of the wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s when the outside wind direction was easterly showed that the stream velocity to the monitor louver was faster and the recirculation area was clearer at 6 m/s than at 2 m/s. In addition, the trend of a westerly wind was similar to that of the easterly wind. The ventilation rate according to the wind speed was 13.1 times and 4.4 times for a wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s, respectively. If the wind speed is 2 m/s, the situation does not meet the required number of ventilations per hour in a general plant, and needs to be improved.

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash, a by-products from thermal power plant to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of fly ash is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effective in the reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator and curing condition in order to develop cementless fly ash based alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that it was possible for us to make alkali-activated mortar with 70MPa at the age of 28days by using alkaline activator manufactured as 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate and applying the atmospheric curing after high temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48hours.

  • Recycling of bottom ash from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator has been strictly limited due to its composition of high level chlorine and other unfavorable substances. The composition of MSW has been, however, changed after the introduction of garbage-bag sales system, extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy and the prohibition of direct landfill of food waste. Recent waste shows reduced moisture and chlorine content, increased calorific value due to the separation of food waste, incombustible materials and PVC. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of composition changes of MSW incinerator bottom ash and to compare the analytical results with those before the separation system was introduced. CaO content of bottom ash, one of the major component of cement clinker, increased from 26.7% in 2001 to 34.0% in 2006. The chlorine content showed a dramatic decrease from 1.84% in 2001 to 0.00655% in 2006, which is closely compatible with that of the fly ash of coal-utilizing thermal power plants, which is mainly due to the changes of MSW composition. It is eventually considered that there is a possibility of utilizing the incinerator bottom ash as a raw material of cement clinker feed substances.

  • In order to analyze the effect of maleic anhydride (MAH) content and styrene monomer (SM)/MAH mole ratio on reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted random polypropylenes (MAH-g-rPP), MAH-g-rPPs were prepared by using a twin screw extruder. MAH contents were 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 phr and SM/initiator mole ratio was 0.0, 1.0, and 2.0. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was used as an initiator. The graft degree of MAH was confirmed by the existence of carbonyl group (C = O) stretching peak at $1700cm^{-1}$ from FT-IR spectrum. The degree of graft reaction increased up to 3.0 phr MAH and showed the optimum value at 1.0 SM/MAH mole ratio from the area ratio of C = O and C-H stretching peak. Thermal and crystallization properties of MAH-g-rPP and PP/MAH-g-rPP/pulp composites were investigated by DSC, TGA, XRD, and POM. There was a decrease in non-isothermal crystallization temperature of PP/MAH-g-PP/pulp composites. Based on tensile properties and SEM pictures for the fractured surface of PP/MAH-g-PP/pulp composites, MAH content of 1.0 wt% and SM/MAH mole ratio of 1.0 were the optimum formulation as the compatibilizer. The rheological properties of the composites were measured by dynamic Rheometer to compare the processability of the composites with and without compatibilizer. The power law index showed slightly low value at the composites with compatibilizer.
