  • This study reports the surface temperature pattern of the Tokyo Metropolitan area using the ASTER surface temperature product. The product is an image processed by applying temperature-emissivity separation to atmospheric corrected infrared thermal radiance of the land surface, then converted to surface temperature by using Planck's function. Daytime and nighttime observation in a cold season and a warm season were used in this study. As a result, 1) contrast between urban and suburban, 2) extraction of heating area in urban, 3) measurement of cooling effect of green space were achieved.

  • The zodiacal light emission is the thermal emission from the interplanetary dust and the dominant diffuse radiation in the mid- to far-infrared wavelength region. Even in the far-infrared, the contribution of the zodiacal emission is not negligible at the region near the ecliptic plane. The AKARI far-infrared all-sky survey covered 97% of the whole sky in four photometric bands with band central wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and $160{\mu}m$. AKARI detected the small-scale structure of the zodiacal dust cloud, such as the asteroidal dust bands and the circumsolar ring, in far-infrared wavelength region. Although the most part of the zodiacal light structure in the AKARI far-infrared all-sky image can be well reproduced with the DIRBE zodiacal light model, there are discrepancies in the small-scale structures. In particular, the intensity and the ecliptic latitude of the peak position of the asteroidal dust bands cannot be reproduced precisely with the DIRBE models. The AKARI observational data during more than one year has advantages over the 10-month DIRBE data in modeling the full-sky zodiacal dust cloud. The resulting small-scale zodiacal light structure template has been used to subtract the zodiacal light from the AKARI all-sky maps.

  • Modern infrared-guided weapons detect and destroy targets by seeking and tracking the infrared radiation emitted by the target. By covering the target with a material that has low infrared emissivity, the infrared signal can be reduced to evade tracking. However, this method is effective only when the target is hotter than the background. Since the temperature of the background varies significantly between day and night, target signals with low emissivity at night can be captured by the optical systems of guided weapons due to signal contrast, as they are smaller than the background signals. In this study, the optimal emissivity for implementing infrared stealth for ground targets is calculated based on the temperature and emissivity of the background, as well as the temperature of the target. The size of the signal received by the optical systems of guided weapons, the contrast value of the image, and the lock-on range were calculated for target signals that vary depending on the emissivity of the target. The effectiveness of the optimal emissivity was demonstrated by thermal imaging computer simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics software.

  • In the presence of infrared light, a CMOS Readout IC (ROIC) for a microbolometer typed infrared sensor detects the voltage or current that is caused by the changing in resistance in the bolometer sensor. A serious problem in designing the ROIC is how the value of the bolometer and reference resistors vary because of variations in manufacturing process. Since different pixel have different, resistance values, sensor operations must contend with fixed pattern noise (FPN) problems. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to compensate for the fluctuation in reference resistance by tiling into account the process variation. By using constant current source basing and correlated double sampling, we solved FPN.

Neurilemmoma of Deep Peroneal Nerve Sensory Branch : Thermographic Findings with Compression Test

  • We report a case of neurilemmoma of deep peroneal nerve sensory branch that triggered sensory change with compression test on lower extremity. After resection of tumor, there are evoked thermal changes on pre- and post-operative infrared (IR) thermographic images. A 52-year-old female presented with low back pain, sciatica, and sensory change on the dorsal side of the right foot and big toe that has lasted for 9 months. She also presented with right tibial mass sized 1.2 cm by 1.4 cm. Ultrasonographic imaging revealed a peripheral nerve sheath tumor arising from the peroneal nerve. IR thermographic image showed hyperthermia when the neurilemoma induced sensory change with compression test on the fibular area, dorsum of foot, and big toe. After surgery, the symptoms and thermographic changes were relieved and disappeared. The clinical, surgical, radiographic, and thermographic perspectives regarding this case are discussed.

  • This paper introduces the design techniques of an IR module using the 2-D array un-cooled type infrared detector which is applied to the individual combat weapon. Considering the size and weight of the hand carried weapon system, we used a very small-sized detector and applied an adaptive temperature control algorithm so that the operation consumed with low power can be possible. We applied the AR(Auto Regressive) filter to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in a thermal image processing step. We also applied the plateau equalization and boundary enhancement techniques to improve the visibility for human visual system.

Early Detection of Foliar Damage Caused by Ozone Exposure with Thermal Image Analysis (식물체 잎표면의 열화상 분석을 통한 오존 피해 조기 진단)

  • 오존에 의한 식물체의 가시피해 발현 이전에 나타나는 비가시적 피해를 찾아내기 위하여 적외선 열화상장치(infrared thermography)를 이용하여 하루 8시간씩 0.3 ppm 오존에 노출된 나팔꽃(Ipomoea purpurea)잎표면의 온도분포 변화를 조사하였다. 노출 첫날에는 온도분포의 뚜렷한 변화를 볼 수 없었다. 노출 2일째, 오존 노출 2시간 결과후, 완전히 자란 제3엽의 특정 부분에서 급격한 온도분포 변화를 보였으며, 그로부터 약 4시간 경과 후에 동일 지점에서 최초의 가시적 피해가 발생했다. 급격한 온도분포 변화를 보인 부분과 최초 가시피해가 발생한 부분이 일치한 점은 가시피해 발생과 그 이전의 온도분포 변화가 밀접하게 상관되어 있다는 것을 의미한다고 하겠다. 잎표면의 열화상 분석방법을 대기오염원에 의한 식물체의 가시피해 발현 이전에 진행되고 있는 비가시적 반응의 조기진단에 적용할 수 있으며 생태환경 친화적인 대기 환경관리를 위한 대기오염원은 배출조절용 생체반응기(biosensor)로 이용 가능하겠다.

  • On this study, we performed the landuse classification using the Landsat data acquired before and after reclamation, and extracted the ground temperature from infrared band(TM band6) data. Using the satellite data, it was possible to extract changes of landuses effectively according to the reclamation, and could obtain the thermal characteristics of the reclaimed area and the surroundings by converting infrared data value into temperatures of surfaces of ground and water. The result of this analysis will be used for the land management of large-scale reclaimed area applying the satellite data and related information.

  • As infrared light radiates, the CMOS Readout IC (ROIC) for the microbolometer typed infrared sensor detects voltage or current which is caused by the variation of resistance in the bolometer sensor. A serious problem we may have in designing the ROIC is the value of bolometer and reference resistors will be changed due to process variation. Since each pixel does not have the same value of resistance, fixed pattern noise problems happen during the sensor operations. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to compensate the fluctuation of reference resistance with taking account of process variation. By using a comparator and a cross coupled latch, we will make the value of reference resistor same as the bolometer's.
