Thermal analysis has been performed to evaluate the thermal effect on composite antenna (Ka-band) structure in space environment. The concepts of thermal control are also presented to maintain the antenna components within respective temperature limits. A steady-state algorithm of I-DEAS' thermal analysis software was utilized to predict both maximum and minimum temperature, maximum gradient temperature, and temperature distribution on each antenna component.

In the present work we consider morphological structure of the faces of BGO crystals grown by Czochralski technique under the conditions of low temperature gradient (0.1~1 deg/cm) and interconnection between the morphological features of faces at the crystallization front and the formation of defects within the crystal volume. It is demonstrated that the {112} faces retain stability while the growing surface deviates from the crystallographic (112) plane up to 1 degree. At larger deviation, the region of the stable facet growth passes either to the region of macrosteps or to the region of normal growth. depending on conditions.

A new functionally gradient metal coating method using an atomic mixing technique was developed. In this work the effect of silver atomic mixing on the tribological characteristics of silver$.$ films. has been investigated experimentally. Atomic mixing was implemented by using the, bombardment .of accelerated Ar ions during the thermal evaporation coating process of silver films. Experiments were performed in dry conditions using a ball-on-disk test rig at a load range of 19.6 mN - 17.64 N and a sliding velocity of 20 mm/sec. Results showed that the life of functionally gradient silver coating was enhanced about 100 times more than that of thermally evaporated silver coating and 2 times more than that of IBAD silver coating. The functionally gradient. film also showed low friction and wear compared to those of the evaporated silver and

The present paper employs nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) to study buckling behavior of functionally graded magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (FG-METE) nanoshells under various physical fields. NSGT modeling of the nanoshell contains two size parameters, one related to nonlocal stress field and another related to strain gradients. It is considered that mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic loads are exerted to the nanoshell. Temperature field has uniform and linear variation in nanoshell thickness. According to a power-law function, piezo-magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of the nanoshell are considered to be graded in thickness direction. Five coupled governing equations have been obtained by using Hamilton's principle and then solved implementing Galerkin's method. Influences of temperature field, electric voltage, magnetic potential, nonlocality, strain gradient parameter and FG material exponent on buckling loads of the FG-METE nanoshell have been studied in detail.
In this article the frequency response of magneto-flexo-electric rotary porous (MFERP) nanobeams subjected to thermal loads has been investigated through nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory. A quasi-3D beam model beam theory is used for the expositions of the displacement components. With the aid of Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of MFERP nanobeams are obtained. Further, administrating an analytical solution the frequency problem of MFERP nanobeams are solved. In addition the numerical examples are also provided to evaluate the effect of nonlocal strain gradient parameter, hygro thermo environment, flexoelectric effect, in-plane magnet field, volume fraction of porosity and angular velocity on the dimensionless eigen frequency.

Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) can be a cost-effective and renewable geothermal energy source, depending on site-specific and thermohydraulic conditions. To design an effective ATES system having the effect of groundwater movement, understanding of thermohydraulic processes is necessary. The heat transfer phenomena for an aquifer heat storage are simulated by using FEFLOW with the scenario of heat pump operation with pumping and waste water reinjection in a two layered confined aquifer model. Temperature distribution of the aquifer model is generated, and hydraulic heads and temperature variations are monitored at the both wells during 365 days. The average groundwater velocities are determined with two hydraulic gradient sets according to boundary conditions, and the effect of groundwater flow are shown at the generated thermal distributions of three different depth slices. The generated temperature contour lines at the hydraulic gradient of 0.001 are shaped circular, and the center is moved less than 5 m to the direction of groundwater flow in 365 days simulation period. However at the hydraulic gradient of 0.01, the contour center of the temperature are moved to the end of east boundary at each slice and the largest movement is at bottom slice. By the analysis of thermal interference data between two wells the efficiency of the heat pump system model is validated, and the variation of heads is monitored at injection, pumping and no operation mode.

The thermal distributions near the growth interface of 150mm CZ crystals were measured by three thermocouples installed at the center, middle (half radius) and edge (10m from surface) of the crystals. The results show that larger growth rates produced smaller thermal gradients. This contradicts the widely used heat flux balance equation. Using this fact, it si confirmed in CZ crystals that the type of point defects created is determined by the value of the thermal gradient (G) near the interface during growth, as already reported for FZ crystals. Although depending on the growth systems the effective lengths of the thermal gradient for defect generation are varied, were defined the effective length as 10mm from the interface in this experiment. If the G is roughly smaller than 20C/cm, vacancy rich CZ crystals are produced. If G is larger than 25C/cm, the species of point defects changes dramatically from vacancies to interstitial. The experimental results which FZ and CZ crystals are detached from the melt show that growth interfaces are filled with vacancy. We propose that large G produces shrunk lattice spacing and in order to relax such lattice excess interstitial are necessary. Such interstitial recombine with vacancies which were generated at the growth interface, next occupy interstitial sites and residuals aggregate themselves to make stacking faults and dislocation loops during cooling. The shape of the growth interface is also determined by the distributions of G across the interface. That is, the small G and the large G in the center induce concave and convex interfaces to the melt, respectively.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are among one of the promising technologies for efficient and clean energy. SOFCs offer several advantages over other types of fuel cells under relatively high temperatures (600℃ to 800℃). However, the thermal behavior of SOFC stacks at high operating temperatures is a serious issue in SOFC development because it can be associated with detrimental thermal stresses on the life span of the stacks. The thermal behavior of SOFC stacks can be influenced by operating or material properties. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the effects of the thermal conductivity of each component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) on the thermal behavior of samarium-doped ceria-based SOFCs at intermediate temperatures. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate SOFC operation at 600℃. The temperature distributions and gradients of a single cell at 0.7 V under different thermal conductivity values are analyzed and discussed to determine their relationship. Simulations reveal that the influence of thermal conductivity is more remarkable for the anode and electrolyte than for the cathode. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the anode by 50% results in a 23% drop in the maximum thermal gradients. The results for the electrolyte are subtle, with a ~67% reduction in thermal conductivity that only results in an 8% reduction in the maximum temperature gradient. The effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradient is important because it can be used to predict thermal stress generation.

The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.

The skin-frame type structure is designed to investigate the thermal deformation of the wing skin induced by the temperature gradient. In order to effectively simulate the temperature gradient on the wing specimen, a water cooling system is devised on the frame of the specimen. Out of surface skin deformation of the skin-frame type structure made of SUS304 material with respect to the temperature is successfully measured using the digital image correlation (DIC) technique including quantitative evaluation of the measurement uncertainty.
