  • Based on the typical pixel structure and parameters of a polysilicon uncooled bolometer, the absorption rate of a polysilicon microbridge infrared detector for 10.6 ㎛ laser energy was calculated through the optical admittance method, and the thermal coupling model of a polysilicon microbridge component irradiated by far infrared laser was established based on theoretical formulas. Then a numerical simulation study was carried out by means of finite element analysis for the actual working environment. It was found that the maximum temperature and maximum stress of the microbridge component are approximately exponentially changing with the laser power of the irradiation respectively and that they increase monotonically. The highest temperature zone of the model is gradually spread by the two corners of the bridge surface that are not connected to the bridge legs, and the maximum stress acts on both sides of the junction of the microbridge legs and the substrate. The mechanism of laser-induced hard damage to polysilicon detectors is the melting damage caused by high temperature. This paper lays the foundation for the subsequent study of the interference mechanism of the laser on working state polysilicon detectors.

  • For use in constructing highly sensitive thermal detectors, the present authors have been studying the preparation of Superconducting Flux Flow Sensor(SFFS). In this research, SFFS with five channel ($5{\mu}m$/1channel) has been fabricated based on the flux flow using high temperature superconducting thin films by the ICP etching technique. We have designed a bolometer based on the temperature dependence of the kinetic inductance of a superconducting flux flow thin film. In this paper examines the fabrications and flux flow resistance and thermometer responses of the highly sensitive sensor constructed of a thin YBCO film. It is also suggested that they will be applicable to a new type of flux flow sensor.

  • Infrared (IR) detectors are widely used for many applications, such as temperature measurement, intruder and fire detection, robotics and industrial equipment, thermoelstic stress analysis, medical diagnostics, and chemical analysis. Quantum detectors commonly need to be refrigerated below 80 K, and thus a cooling system should be equipped together with the detector system. The cooling load, which should be removed by the cooling system to maintain the nominal operating temperature of the detector, critically depends on the insulation efficiency of the cryochamber housing the detector. Thermal analysis of cryochamber includes the conduction heat transfer through a cold well, the gases conduction and gas outgassing, as well as radiation heat transfer, The transient cooling characteristics of an infrared detector cryochamber are investigated experimentally in the present study. The transient cooling load increases as the gas pressure is increased. Gas pressure becomes significant as the cooling process proceeds. Cool down time is also increased as the gas pressure is increased. It is also found that natural convection effects on cool down time become significant when the gas pressure is increased.

  • In Korea, fires are the second most common type of disaster, causing large-scale damages. The installation of fire detectors is legislated to prevent fires and minimize damage. Conventional fire detectors have limitations in initial suppression of failures because they detect fires when large amounts of smoke and heat are generated. Additionally, frequent malfunctions in fire detectors may cause users to turn them off. To address these issues, recent studies focus on accurately detecting even small-scale fires using multi-sensor and deep-learning technologies. They also aim at quick fire detection and thermal decomposition using gas. However, these studies are not practical because they overlook the heavy computations involved. Therefore, we propose a fast and accurate fire detection system based on multi-sensor and deep-learning technologies. In addition, we propose a computation-reduction method for selecting sensors suitable for detection using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Specifically, we use a moving average to handle outliers and two-stage labeling to reduce false detections during preprocessing. Subsequently, a deep-learning model is selected as LSTM for analyzing the temporal sequence. Then, we analyze the data using a correlation analysis. Consequently, the model using a small data group with low correlation achieves an accuracy of 99.88% and a false detection rate of 0.12%.

  • Accurate prediction of the fire-induced air velocity, temperature and smoke flow in underground utility tunnel becomes more important for the optimization of design and placement of heat and smoke detectors. In order to improve the safety of underground utility tunnel systems, the behaviors of fire-induced smoke flow and temperature distributions are investigated. Especially, two different cross-sectional shapes of tunnel, such as rectangular and circular types are modeled. Also, fire source is modeled as a volumetric heat source. Three-dimensional thermal-flow characteristics in an underground tunnel are solved by means of FVM using SIMPLE algorithm. The effects of shape geometry on the fire-induced flow characteristics are graphically depicted. It is desirable that heat and smoke detectors are installed on the cables and the top of the wall.

  • The Cdl-xZnxTe film was fabricated by thermal evaporation for the flat-panel X-ray detector. The stoichimetric ratio and the crystal structure of a polycrystalline Cd$_{1-x}$ Zn$_{x}$Te were investigated by EPMA and XRD, respectively. The leakage current and X-ray sensitivity of the fabricated films were measured to analyze the X-ray response characteristic of Zn in the polycrystalline CdZnTe thin film. The leakage current and the output charge density of Cd$_{0.7}$Zn$_{0.3}$Te thin film were measured to 0.37 nA/cm$^2$ and 260 pc/cm$^2$ at an applied voltage of 2.5 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. Experimental results showed that the increase of Zn doping rates in Cd$_{1-x}$ Zn$_{x}$Te detectors reduced the leakage current and improved the signal to noise ratio significantly.

  • Metal-semiconductor contact is very important for the operating property of semiconductor detector. $Cd_{0.96}$ $Zn_{0.04}$ Te semiconductor crystal was grown with Bridgman method, and the crystal was cut and polished. EPMA (Electron Probe Micro Analyzer) and ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) analysis were done to obtain the chemical composition and impurity of the crystal. Metal contact was deposited with thermal evaporator on both sides of the crystal. Detectors with Au/CZT/Au and In/CZT/Au structure were made, and I-V curve and the energy spectrum were measured with the detectors. It could be seen that the detector with the In/CZT/Au structure has superior property than the detector with Au/CZT/Au structure when the crystal resistivity was low. However, the metal contact structure effect becomes low when the crystal resistivity was high.

  • This study develops superheated emulsion detectors that are both sensitive to fast neutrons, and thermal neutrons owing to the exergonic 63Li(n, α)31H capture reaction caused by the 6Li-containing compound dispersed throughout the gel-like medium. The experimental research was conducted on two SEDs. One detector was an ordinary Freon-12 detector and the other was a Freon-12 detector containing 3.4 % (by weight) LiCl. In order to investigate the sensitivity of lithium-containing SEDs to thermal neutrons, two types of SEDs were simultaneously exposed to various flux levels of thermal neutrons from 241Am-Be neutron source inside a cylindrical tank filled with water. A Boron-lined proportional counter was used to estimate the thermal neutron flux and the relevant MCNP code was developed for flux and dose calculations in the prepared set-up around 241Am-Be source. The results demonstrate that there is a proportional relationship between the variations of SED response and the change in thermal neutron flux and dose. Also, the sensitivity of SED was estimated.

  • For ensuring nuclear safeguards, we report the analytical signal-detection performance of thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) with continuous heating for the measurement of isotopic ratios in samples containing ultra-trace amounts of uranium. As methods for detecting uranium signals, peak-jumping mode using a single detector and static mode using multiple detectors were examined with U100 (10% 235U-enriched) uranium standard samples in the femtogram-to-picogram range. Uranium isotope ratios, n(235U)/n(238U), were measured down to levels of 1 fg and 3 fg in static and peak-jumping modes, respectively, while n(234U)/n(238U) and n(236U)/n(238U) values were measured down to levels of 100 fg in both modes. In addition, the dependency of the 238U signal intensity on sample quantity exhibited similar tendencies in both modes. The precisions of the isotope ratios obtained in the static mode over all sample ranges used in this study were overall slightly higher than those obtained in peak-jumping mode. These results indicate that isotope ratio measurements by TIMS with continuous heating are almost independent of the detection method, i.e., peak-jumping mode or static mode, which is characteristic of isotope-ratio measurements using the TIMS method with continuous heating. TIMS with continuous heating is advantageous as it exhibits the properties of multiple detectors within a single detector, and is expected to be used in various fields in addition to ensuring nuclear safeguards.
