알칼리금속 열전기변환장치의 접합과 출력성능 (Joining and Performance of Alkali Metal Thermal-to-electric Converter (AMTEC))

  • 알칼리금속을 이용한 열전기변환장치(Alkali-Metal Thermal-to-electric Converter)는 열을 전기로 직접 변환하는 기술이다. AMTEC 기술은 기존 에너지기술 대비 고효율성과 고밀도성을 지니는 정적 에너지 변환 장치로서 이론 발전효율이 40%로 높고 단위발전량이 500 W/kg, $2.01W/cm^2$로 우수하다. AMTEC의 작동원리는 작동유체인 소듐이 분압차이에 의해서 고체전해질인 베타알루미나(BASE)의 내부에서 외부로 이온화를 거쳐며 통과하는데, 이때 전자를 주고 받으며 전기를 생성한다. BASE내외부의 분압차 형성을 위해서는 고온내구성과 기밀성이 높은 접합기술이 요구된다. 개발된 접합기술을 이용하여BASE/절연부/금속부 시스템의 안정적인 전기적/구조적 시스템을 구성하고 멀티-셀 모듈들을 제작하여 개방회로 전압과 전류-전압특성을 측정하는 방법으로 AMTEC 모듈전지들의 출력성능과 수명을 평가하였다.

플랫 판넬표시장치용 DC-DC 컨버터 집적회로의 설계 (A Integrated Circuit Design of DC-DC Converter for Flat Panel Display)

  • 본 논문은 플랫판넬 디스플레이 장치에 사용할 DC-DC 변환기의 설계에 관한 것이다. 6~14[V]의 단일 DC 전원전압으로부터 플랫 판넬 백바이어스용 -5[V] DC 전압 발생회로(Negative DC Voltage Generator)와 승압된 15[V], 23[V] DC 전압 발생회로, 그리고 강압된 3.3[V] DC를 얻기 위한 회로를 설계하였다. 또한 기준 전압원으로 사용하기 위한 밴드갭 회로와 발진기, 레벨변환기 회로, 고온보호 회로 등을 설계하였다. 제작공정은 부(-)전압으로 동작하는 회로와 기타 회로를 분리하기 위해서 트리플-웰(Triple-Well)구조가 적용된 공정 내압 30[V], 최소선폭 0.35[${\mu}m$], 2P_2M CMOS 공정을 사용하였다. 설계된 모든 회로는 시뮬레이션으로 검증하여 동작을 확인하였으며 원 칩으로 제작하여 플랫판넬 디스플레이 장치에 응용할 수 있도록 기능을 확보하였다.

  • In this study, single-phase and three-level boost converters applied to the photovoltaic system were compared and analyzed in terms of efficiency and power density according to the input voltage and load conditions. For accurate analysis of efficiency, the losses in each device of the single-phase and three-level boost converters were derived using mathematical equations and simulations by using the PSIM thermal module. Then, the losses were compared with the efficiency confirmed through the actual experiments. Results confirmed that the efficiency and power density can be improved by applying the three-level boost converter to the system according to the selection of the switching frequency.

  • This study deals with an evaluation method for testing the robustness of the 4 kW commercial power electronic cooling system to the thermal environment. The power electronic cooling system consists of a cascaded push-pull DC / DC converter, a three-phase DC / AC inverter, and an electric compressor. The system manufactured by the thermal environment evaluation test (heat distribution test, thermal impact test, high temperature operation test, temperature cycle test, low temperature operation test) for the commercial electric power cooling system for commercial vehicle proves that it is robust against thermal environment.

Experimental and computational analysis of behavior of three-way catalytic converter under axial and radial flow conditions

  • The competition to deliver ultra-low emitting vehicles at a reasonable cost is driving the automotive industry to invest significant manpower and test laboratory resources in the design optimization of increasingly complex exhaust after-treatment systems. Optimization can no longer be based on traditional approaches, which are intensive in hardware use and laboratory testing. The CFD is in high demand for the analysis and design in order to reduce developing cost and time consuming in experiments. This paper describes the development of a comprehensive practical model based on experiments for simulating the performance of automotive three-way catalytic converters, which are employed to reduce engine exhaust emissions. An experiment is conducted to measure species concentrations before and after catalytic converter for different loads on engine. The model simulates the emission system behavior by using an exhaust system heat conservation and catalyst chemical kinetic sub-model. CFD simulation is used to study the performance of automotive catalytic converter. The substrate is modeled as a porous media in FLUENT and the standard k-e model is used for turbulence. The flow pattern is changed from axial to radial by changing the substrate model inside the catalytic converter and the flow distribution and the conversion efficiency of CO, HC and NOx are achieved first, and the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. It is found that the conversion from axial to radial flow makes the catalytic converter more efficient. These studies help to understand better the performance of the catalytic converter in order to optimize the converter design.

열전 에너지 하베스팅을 위한 저전압 DC-DC 부스트 변환기 (DC-DC Boost Converter for Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting)

  • 본 논문에서는 열전에너지 하베스팅을 위한 DC-DC 부스트 변환기를 설계하였다. 설계한 변환기는 열전소자의 작은 출력 전압으로부터 start-up 블록을 통해 일정 전압까지 승압된 $V_{DD}$를 얻으며, 이는 내부 블록들을 동작시키는데 사용된다. $V_{DD}$가 원하는 전압 값에 도달하면 detector가 이를 감지하여 start-up 블록을 off 시킴으로써 전류소모를 최소화하였다. 비교기의 출력에 따라 $V_{DD}$를 위한 DC-DC 변환기와 최종출력 $V_{OUT}$을 위한 변환기를 번갈아가며 동작시켜서 최종적으로 승압된 출력을 얻는다. 모의실험 결과, 설계한 변환기는 열전소자로부터 200mV의 전압을 입력받아 2.8V의 전압을 출력한다. 0.35um CMOS공정을 사용하여 설계한 칩의 크기는 PAD를 포함하여 $1.52mm{\times}0.95mm$이다.

승용차용 세라믹 촉매 담체의 열적 내구성의 실험적 평가 (Experimental Estimation of Thermal Durability in Ceramic Catalyst Supports for Passenger Car)

  • Ceramic honeycomb structures have performed successfully as catalyst supports for meeting hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrous emissions standards for gasoline-powered vehicles. Three-way catalyst converter has to withstand high temperature and thermal stress due to pressure fluctuations and vibrations. Thermal stress constitutes a major portion of the total stress which the ceramic catalyst support experiences in service. In this study, temperature distribution was measured at ceramic catalyst supports. Thermal durability was evaluated by power series dynamic fatigue damage model. Radial temperature gradient was higher than axial temperature gradient. Thermal stresses depended on direction of elastic modulus. Axial stresses are higher than tangential stresses. Tangential and axial stresses remained below thermal fatigue threshold in all engine operation ranges.

광펄스 살균을 위한 다채널 고전압 컨버터의 개발 (Development of the High Voltage Converter for the Pulsed Light Sterilization)

  • As the demand for the fresh non-thermal food is increased, it is required to develop the fast and perfect sterilization method. The conventional sterilization method using ultraviolet lamp has some disadvantages such as imperfect sterilization and longer process time. In this research, IPL(Intense Pulsed Light) sterilization system is introduced to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional system, and suitable power supply architecture for the system is discussed. Since the IPL sterilization system uses Zenon lamps which requires the 600~2,100[V] for the lightning and 16~30[kV] for the trigger, the converter for the system should be able to generate the high voltage and to discharge the large amount of energy instantaneously. In this research a new power system architecture which has a modified forward converter topology with two switches for generating high voltage and a capacitor bank to control the energy for the lightning by switching is introduced.

  • A numerical procedure for the analysis of transient behavior in a monolithic catalytic converter is presented. The thermal behavior of a monolithic catalytic converter is fully coupled with mass transfer and exothermic reaction between exhaust gases and the catalytic converter. In the present study, all these processes are solved simultaneously. The heat transfer process is approximated by combinging one dimensional convection and conduction and the chemical reaction is also simply modelled by using the concepts of reaction rate and reaction heat. All the partial diffenrential equations for the heat transfer, mass transfer and chemical reactions are appximated by using finite volume method. Resulting algebraic equations are solved using the Newton's method. To see the workability of present numerical method, two well known problems, say step increase and step decrease in the gas inlet temperature, have been calculated. Comparion of present solutions with previous solutions shows a good agreement.

  • This paper introduces an enhanced interleaved (IL) PFC (Power Factor Correction) boost converter typed 650V Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which is fully optimized hybrid IGBT converter modules; Silicon (Si) IGBT and Silicon Carbide (SiC) diode, for up to 10kW HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. It utilizes newly developed $4^{th}$ Generation Field Stop (FS) trench IGBTs, $EXTREMEFAST^{TM}$ anti-paralleled diodes, SiC Junction Barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes, Bridge rectifiers, Multi-function LVIC, and Built-in thermistor provide good reliable characteristics for the entire system. This module also takes technical advantage of DBC (Direct Bonded Copper) substrate for the better thermal performance. It is shown that the Si IGBT/SiC diode hybrid IL PFC module can achieve excellent EMI performance and greatly enhance the power handling capability or switching frequency of various applications compared to the Si IGBT/Diode. This paper provides an overall description of the newly developed 650V/50A Hybrid SiC IL PFC IPM product.
