Railway wheel and axle are the most critical components in railway system. A wheel and axle failure can cause a derailment with its attendant loss of life and property. The service conditions of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. Therefore, more precise evaluation of wheelset strength and safety has been desired. Damages of railway wheel are a spatting by wheel/rail contact and thermal crack by braking heat etc. One of the main source of damage is a residual stress. therefore it is important to evaluate exactly. A Residual stress of wheel is formed at the process of heat treatment when manufacturing. it is changed by contact stress developed by wheel/rail contact and thermal stress from heat induced in braking. The objective of this paper is to estimate the variation and magnitude of the residual stress of railway wheel.
In the case of axisymmetric thermal analysis of drum brakes, the distribution of frictional heat produced on the interface and temperature difference between mating frictional faces are very interesting problems to computational researchers. In the first part, the influence of the s-cam load angles and elastic modulus of the pad on the contact pressure distribution between pad and drum was checked by a three dimensional model. In the second part heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled by using a thin interface element, so artificial division of the generated frictional heat between pad and drum is not necessary. Temperature difference between mating frictional faces is successfully modeled by using the interface element. The influence of some parameters on the thermal distribution is checked. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.
It is essential to develop a large capacity, non-contact nondestructive inspection system having high reliability to investigate repaired and strengthened structures. Nowadays, an infrared camera is widely used in non-contact nondestructive inspection system. Because an infrared camera is sensitive to the surrounding environment, it is necessary to improve a sensitivity of thermal image information and a relationship between defects and thermal image information. In this papaer, presented is an optimum void detection chart for the optimum conditions to detect infrared rays from inside and outside defects like voids and cracks in concrete structures using extensive computer simulation. Sensitivity studies are performed with respect to variables influencing the temperature distribution such as heating temperature, heating time, and geometries of defect, etc. It may be stated that it could be successfully utilized for the non-contact nondestructive inspection system to detect defects in concrete structures.
Phosphorus is known to pile-up at the silicon surface when it is thermally oxidized. A thin layer, about 40nm thick from the silicon surface, is created containing more phosphorus than the bulk of the emitter. This layer has a gaussian profile with the peak at the surface of the silicon. In this study the pile-up effect was studied if this layer can act as a front surface field for solar cells. The effect was also tested if its high dose of phosphorus at the silicon surface can lower the contact resistance with the front metal contact. P-type wafers were first doped with phosphorus to create an n-type emitter. The doping was done using either a furnace or ion implantation. The wafers were then oxidized using dry thermal oxidation. The effect of the pile-up as a front surface field was checked by measuring the minority carrier lifetime using a QSSPC. The contact resistance of the wafers were also measured to see if the pile-up effect can lower the series resistance.
The purpose of this study is to compare the different shapes of condenser of the direct contact heat transfer from the heat pipe condenser to the receiving water using CFD. The heat transfer from the working fluid of the heat pipe to receiving fluid flows through the manifolder is one of the important part in evacuated solar collector system. The retrenchment of the thermal resistance between the heat pipe and the manifolder could increase the thermal performances of the whole system. Recently, direct heat transfer from the heat pipe condenser wall to the receiving water was suggested and accompanied experiments were achieved. This experiment shows the better performances of the direct contact heat transfer analogically. Preceding calculations are carried out for the performance comparison: mesh dependence test, discretization method test and equation model test. with these preceding tests, 4 different shapes of condenser are compared and each case were set up for the same heat flux at the condenser wall. The calculation result shows that the efficiency of the extended surface condenser shape is 10% higher then the that of the others.

The direct contact condensation phenomenon, which occurs when steam is injected into the subcooled water, has been experimentally investigated. Two plume shapes in the stable condensation regime are found to be conical and ellipsoidal shapes depending on the steam mass flux and the liquid subcooling. Divergent plumes, however, are found when the subcooling is relatively small. The measured expansion ratio of the maximum plume diameter to the injector inner diameter ranges from 1.0 to 2.3. By means of fitting a large amount of measured data, an empirical correlation is obtained to predict the steam plume length as a function of a dimensionless steam mass flux and a driving potential for the condensation process. The average heat transfer coefficient of direct contact condensation has been found to be in the range 1.0~3.5 ㎿/$m^2$.$^{\circ}C$. Present results show that the magnitude of the average condensation heat transfer coefficient depends mainly on the steam mass fin By using dynamic pressure measurements and visual observations, six regimes of direct contact condensation have been identified on a condensation regime map, which are chugging, transition region from chugging to condensation oscillation, condensation oscillation, bubbling condensation oscillation, stable condensation, and interfacial oscillation condensation. The regime boundaries are quite clearly distinguishable except the boundaries of bubbling condensation oscillation and interfacial oscillation condensation.
An HTS racetrack-type coil without turn-to-turn insulation was characterized by critical current, sudden discharge, and over-current tests with respect to external pressures applied to the straight sections of the coil. The thermal stability of the non-insulated HTS racetrack-type coil was remarkably enhanced with increasing external pressure applied to the straight sections of racetrack-type coil. Furthermore, over-current test results confirmed that the non-insulated HTS racetrack-type coil with increased turn-to-turn thermal contact has the potential to be manufactured into field coils of HTS wind turbine generators with highly enhanced thermal and electrical stabilities.
There has been an increasing demand for high performance and energy-saving of blind. In order to develop the eco-friendly blind textiles, heat treatment process has been utilized for LM(Low Melting) polyester fabrics and the changes of the physical properties of the treated fabrics were examined according to temperature of heat treatment. Morphology, surface reflectance, contact angle, luster, thermal property and mechanical property of heat treated LM polyester fabrics were investigated. As results, morphology analysis of thermal treated fabrics confirmed that degree of fusion of LM polyester yarns improved with increase of temperature. Surface reflectance of thermal treated fabrics decreased with increase of temperature. Luster and contact angle of a water droplet on thermal treated fabrics increased slightly with increase of temperature. The mechanical properties of the fabrics by KES-FB system were found to be temperature-dependent and especially, bending and shear properties among them were highly related to temperature.
