Bridge fire hazard has become a growing concern over the last decade due to the rapid increase of ground transportation of hazardous materials and resulting fire incidents. The lack of fire safety provisions in steel bridges can be a significant issue owing steel thermal properties that lead to fast degradation of steel properties at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, the development of composite action between steel girders and concrete decks can increase the fire resistance of steel bridges and meet fire safety requirements in some applications. This paper reviews the fire problem in steel bridges and the fire behavior of composite steel-concrete bridge girders. A numerical model is developed to trace the fire response of a typical bridge girder and is validated using measurements from fire tests. The selected bridge girder is composed by a hot rolled steel section strengthened with bearing stiffeners at midspan and supports. A concrete slab sitting on the top of the girder is connected to the slab through shear studs to provide full composite action. The validated numerical model was used to investigate the fire resistance of real scale bridge girders and the effect of the composite action under different scenarios (standard and hydrocarbon fires). Results showed that composite action can significantly increase the fire resistance of steel bridge girders. Besides, fire severity played an important role in the fire behavior of composite girders and both factors should be taken into consideration in the design of steel bridges for fire safety.
Bridges are critical to the civil engineering infrastructure network as they facilitate movement of people, the transportation of goods and services. Given the aging of bridge infrastructure, federal officials mandate visual inspections biennially to identify necessary repair actions which are time, cost, and labor-intensive. Additionally, the expansion joints of bridges are rarely monitored due to cost. However, expansion joints are critical as they absorb movement from thermal effects, loadings strains, impact, abutment settlement, and vehicle motion movement. Thus, the need to monitor bridge expansion joints efficiently, at a low cost, and wirelessly is desired. This paper addresses bridge joint monitoring needs to develop a cost-effective, real-time wireless system that can be validated in a full-scale bridge structure. To this end, a wireless expansion joint monitoring was developed using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors. An in-service bridge was selected as a testbed to validate the performance of the developed system compared with traditional displacement sensor, LVDT, temperature and humidity sensors. The short-term monitoring campaign with the wireless sensor system with the internet protocol version 6 over the time slotted channel hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e (6TiSCH) network showed reliable results, providing high potential of the developed system for effective joint monitoring at a low cost.

Most rahmen-type temporary bridges are constructed with limited bridge length to prevent excessive horizontal forces due to the thermal expansion of main girder. To achieve a long length temporary bridge several independent bridges are required and they can not share the bents, at the rahmen-type ends, with the adjacent ones. The additional bents require more cost and reduce the section space under bridges. In order to remove extra bents with keeping the rahmen effect at the bridge ends, this study proposes a new rahmen-type movable joint system for temporary bridges.
Thermal response induced from nonlinear temperature distribution in composite box gilder bridges depends on several variables(environmental conditions, physical and material properties, location and orientation of bridge, and cross-section geometry). In this paper, parametric study are conducted in order to find the effects of variations of seasons, location and orientation of bridge, sectional geometry and some material properties on the axial deformation, curvature and stresses in composite box girder bridge. A two-dimensional transient finite element model to conduct this parametric studies is briefly presented. Firstly, the effects of the parameters on the diurnal variation of curvature are considered, and for the time of maximum curvature, on the distribution of temperature and stresses of composite box girder sectional are considered. Finally, some considerations about the influence of the parameters on the daily maximum values of axial deformation, curvature and stresses are carried out. The influence of thermal effect on structures is important as much as the influence of live or dead load in some cases. In the design of steel composite bridges, the thermal stresses calculated on the supposition that the temperature difference between the concrete slab and steel girder is $10^{\circ}C$ and the temperature distributions are uniform in concrete slab and steel girder can be underestimated.

Solar radiation induces non-uniform temperature distribution in the bridge structure depending on the shape of the structure and shadows cast on it. Especially in the case of curved steel box girder bridges, non-uniform temperature distribution caused by solar radiation may lead to unusual load effects enough to damage the support or even topple the whole curved bridge structure if not designed properly. At present, it is very difficult to design bridges in relation to solar radiation because it is not known exactly how varying temperature distribution affects bridges; at least not specific enough for adoption in design. Standard regulations related to this matter are likewise not complete. In this study, the thermal behavior of curved steel box girder bridges is analyzed while taking the solar radiation effect into consideration. For the analysis, a method of predicting the 3-dimensional temperature distribution of curved bridges was developed. It uses a theoretical solar radiation energy equation together with a commercial FEM program. The behavior of the curved steel box girder bridges was examined using the developed method, while taking into consideration the diverse range of bridge azimuth angles and radii. This study also provides reference data for the thermal design of curved steel box girder bridges under solar radiation, which can be used to develop design guidelines.
To predict service life of coating systems registered in Korean specifications for steel bridge coatings, field deterioration evaluation and accelerated weatherproof test were carried out, and deterioration models were drawn through regression analysis for evaluation results. For the coating systems that have not been used in field, regression analyses were carried out for the virtual evaluation results drawn by applying coordination factor to the field evaluation results for chlorinated rubber and urethane topcoat system. Service life prediction results showed that application of thermal sprayed coating (TSC) could extend service life of coatings to more than twice of general coatings.

A new TFT-LCD panel with air-bridge type gate to data line inter-crossing has been proposed and its characteristics have been measured. The proposed structure has air-gap between gate and data line inter-crossing. This air-bridge TFT-LCD panel has very small capacitance between gate and data line. The new panes structure achieves 9 times fast signal propagation compared with conventional panel, which enables to have enough design margin for 20-inch diagonal and larger size UXGA panel. We have examined thermal and mechanical durability of new panel to verify applicability for commercial AMLCD production. After TEOS and polyimide passivation, this panel withstood a thermal stress at $250^{\circ}C$ and a mechanical stress during the rubbing process.

Due to their light weight, high stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios, and potentially high resistance to environmental degradation, resulting in lower life-cycle costs, polymer composites, are increasingly being considered for use in civil infrastructure applications. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State. In this study, a thermal stress analysis was conducted using finite element method to study failure mechanisms of the superstructure. This analysis evaluated small and large temperature gradient effects on the FRP deck considering lightweight of FRP deck and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck Finite element model was verified using the load tests of the bridge deck. Finally, the analytical results shows the possible failure mechanism of FRP deck under various temperature changes and its corresponding index is suddenly varied depending on the rapid change of temperature on the deck plate.
Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are those bridges without expansion joints. A single row of steel H-piles (SHPs) is commonly used at the thin and stub abutments of IABs to form a flexible support system at the bridge ends to accommodate thermal-induced displacement of the bridge. Consequently, as the IAB expands and contracts due to temperature variations, the SHPs supporting the abutments are subjected to cyclic lateral (longitudinal) displacements, which may eventually lead to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) failure of the piles. In this paper, the potential of using finite element (FE) modeling techniques to estimate the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs is investigated. For this purpose, first, experimental tests are conducted on several SHP specimens to determine their LCF life under thermal-induced cyclic flexural strains. In the experimental tests, the specimens are subjected to longitudinal displacements (or flexural strain cycles) with various amplitudes in the absence and presence of a typical axial load. Next, nonlinear FE models of the tested SHP specimens are developed using the computer program ANSYS to investigate the possibility of using such numerical models to predict the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs. The comparison of FE analysis results with the experimental test results revealed that the FE analysis results are in close agreement with the experimental test results. Thus, FE modeling techniques similar to that used in this research study may be used to predict the LCF life of SHP commonly used in IABs.

To absorb the deformation of live load, thermal gradient, shrinkage and creep in bridge structures and general structures, expansion joint has to be established. Especially expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge has to accomodate the static and dynamic forces and it not only has the durability of itself but also maintain the durability of structure by preventing the leakage of water. The actual used product of expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge is only ones made in France, Germany and Japan. In this study, the development process and test results of developed expansion joint are introduced which has the functional operation and durability enough to apply to high-speed railway bridges, roadway bridges and general structures. The tests consist of fatigue-durability test of 3 million times by high-speed rail load, leakage test and jack-up test for verifying the possibility of exchanging it. The performance of developed expansion joint satisfy the specification of Korea High Speed Rail Construction authority.
