  • An increase in acoustic energy in a combustion chamber coupled with heat fluctuations from flame results in the occurrence of combustion instability. The assessment of combustion stability requires the prediction of acoustic energy variation by understanding the acoustical characteristics of flow boundaries in a combustion chamber. The present paper discusses about the characteristics of acoustic impedances at boundaries in terms of Strouhal number and summarizes theoretical analyses on the acoustic characteristics of injector-head-like configurations. Also, the details of the two-microphone measurement technique have been presented.

  • Precast concrete deck has many advantages comparing with the in-situ concrete deck, and has been successfully applied to replacement of the deteriorated decks and to the newly constructed highway bridges in domestic region. In order to apply the precast decks into the railway bridges, however, differences of the load characteristics between the highway and the railway should be properly taken into account including the train load, longitudinal force of the continuous welded rail. acceleration or braking force, temperature change and shrinkage. Proper level of the longitudinal prestress of the tendons that can ensure integrity of the transverse joints in the deck system is of a primary importance. To this aim, the longitudinal tensile stresses induced by the design loads are derived using three-dimensional finite element analyses, design codes and theoretical equations for the frequently adopted PSC composite girder railway bridge. The estimated proper prestress level to counteract those tensile stresses is over 2.4 MPa, which is similar to the case of the highway bridges.

  • In this paper, we study an asymmetric two-way relaying network where two source nodes intend to exchange information with the help of multiple relay nodes. A hybrid time-division broadcast relaying scheme with joint relay selection (RS) and power allocation (PA) is proposed to realize energy-efficient transmission. Our scheme is based on the asymmetric level of the two source nodes' target signal-to-noise ratio indexes to minimize the total power consumed by the relay nodes. An optimization model with joint RS and PA is studied here to guarantee hybrid relaying transmissions. Next, with the aid of our proposed intelligent optimization algorithm, which combines a genetic algorithm and a simulated annealing algorithm, the formulated optimization model can be effectively solved. Theoretical analyses and numerical results verify that our proposed hybrid relaying scheme can substantially reduce the total power consumption of relays under a traffic asymmetric scenario; meanwhile, the proposed intelligent optimization algorithm can eventually converge to a better solution.

  • Six smooth flat tensile specimens and eighteen punch specimens with three different thicknesses were machined from steel of JIS G3131 SPHC. In addition to punch tests, incremental tensile tests were conducted to obtain average true flow stress - logarithmic true strain curves. Through parametric FE simulations for the tensile specimens, material parameters related to GTN model were identified. Using indenters with three kinds of radius, punch tests were carried out to obtain fracture characteristics of punch specimens. Numerical analyses using both fracture models, GTN and $J_2$ plasticity model, gave that the former estimated well the fracture of punch specimen but the latter did not. A new concept for critical size of plate elements was introduced based on minimum relative sharpness between contact structures. Consequently, a new criterion for critical element size was proposed to be less than 20% of minimum relative radius of interacting structures.

  • Many researches proposed different models and concepts for the PCK. It is important to understand its composition. Most studies investigated the development of PCK and its influence on students' learning from the teachers' perspectives. We developed an instrument for assessing middle school students' perceptions of mathematics teachers' PCK (SPOMTPCK) to investigate the nature of PCK. Theoretical claims and empirical research in PCK were used to design questions and sub-scales for the SPOMTPCK. The face validity of the instrument was established by the expert mathematics teachers and students. A questionnaire consisting of 38 items on a five-point Likert-type scale was used for data collection from 799 middle school students. The exploratory factor analyses resulted in the development of a three-factor scale of 17 items that was proved valid and reliable, that is, pedagogical representation, understanding students and curriculum, and encouraging students' engagement. The Cronbach α coefficients of the scale was 0.935, and the Cronbach α coefficient of three factors were ranged from 0.721 to 0.912. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the questionnaire has good construct validity and the fit indexes are good. MANOVA analysis of variance revealed that the differences in mathematics teachers' PCK identified by students of different school types and grades were statistically significant. It is a validate measurement to evaluate the perceived mathematics teachers' PCK for middle school students.

  • To search for and study the nature of the long-periodic variations of massive stars, we have been carrying out a precise radial velocity (RV) survey for supergiants. Here, we present high-resolution RV measurements of ${\alpha}$ Per which lies near the Cepheid instability strip from November 2005 to February 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). The orbital solution yields a period of 129 days, a 2K amplitude of 80 m/s, and an eccentricity of 0.1. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 7.3 $M{\bigodot}$, we estimate the minimum mass for the planetary companion to be 7.5 MJup with the orbital semi-major axis of 0.97 AU. We do not find the correlation between RV variations and chromospheric activity indicator (Ca II H & K region). The Hipparcos photometry and bisector velocity span (BVS) do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. These analyses suggest that ${\alpha}$ Per is a pulsating supergiant that hosts an exoplanet. If the 129 days variations of ${\alpha}$ Per do not come from an exoplanet but Cepheid-like pulsations, the theoretical boundary of the Cepheid instability strip may need to be extended to the bluer side.

  • Shielding effectiveness(SE) of metallic rectangular enclosure with rectangular slit apertures at horizontal polarization (HP) and vertical polarization(VP) is investigated. The magnetic polarizability of the rectangular slit apertures and the resonance modes of the metallic rectangular enclosure are analyzed theoretically. The simulation results based on these theoretical analyses are compared with the measured ones. The dependence of the shielding effectiveness on the location of the calculation probe inside the enclosure is also investigated.

  • This paper examines the validity of the newly developed IT consulting SERVQUAL measurement tool. In an attempt to measure Ire IS customers' expectations and perceived quality of the services they received, the researchers developed a diagnostic tool of SERVQUAL based on the solid theoretical background, which can specifically be applied to the IT consulting service sector. This on-going research so far, has been applied to six (6) different organizations that have received IT consulting services over the past years. From the preliminary data collected, the correlation and the factor analyses were conducted to understand the underlying concept and refinement of the measurement tool. Although the correlation analysis showed a little tendency of collinearity among some of the variables, all showed sound relationship of the proposed hypotheses. The exploratory factor analytic approach was chosen because it does not set any priori constraints on the estimation of components or the number of components to be extracted. The number of different factor solutions was extracted and tested to see which solution represents better grouping of the variables. The Crombach's Alpha was computed on different combinations of the factor solutions to ensure validity. The results show 8-dimensional IT consulting SERVQUAL measures which they are, assurance, knowledge & skill, customer relationship, support, empathy, process management, expertise, and education, seem more appropriate than the originally proposed 6 dimensions. The study approach was non-experimental cross-sectional research design. The longitudinal design of follow-up studies to periodically revise and refine current measure is strongly recommended for fine tuning of the tool.

  • In the framework of the SPEAR (Seismic PErformance Assessment and Rehabilitation) research Project, an under-designed three storey RC frame structure, designed to sustain only gravity loads, was subjected, in three different configurations 'as-built', Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) retrofitted and rehabilitated by reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing, to a series of bi-directional pseudodynamic (PsD) tests under different values of peak ground acceleration (PGA) (from a minimum of 0.20g to a maximum of 0.30g). The seismic deficiencies exhibited by the 'as-built' structure after the test at PGA level of 0.20g were confirmed by a post - test assessment of the structural seismic capacity performed by a nonlinear static pushover analysis implemented on the structure lumped plasticity model. To improve the seismic performance of the 'as-built' structure', two rehabilitation interventions by using either FRP laminates or RC jacketing were designed. Assumptions for the analytical modeling, design criteria and calculation procedures along with local and global intervention measures and their installation details are herein presented and discussed. Nonlinear static pushover analyses for the assessment of the theoretical seismic capacity of the structure in each retrofitted configuration were performed and compared with the experimental outcomes.

  • In this paper, a high step-up DC-DC PWM converter with continuous input current and low voltage stress is presented for renewable energy application. The proposed converter is composed of a boost converter integrated with an auxiliary step-up circuit. The auxiliary circuit uses an additional coupled inductor and a balancing capacitor with voltage doubler and switching capacitor technique to achieve high step-up voltage gain with an appropriate switch duty cycle. The switched capacitors are charged in parallel and discharged in series by the coupled inductor, stacking on the output capacitor. In the proposed converter, the voltage stress on the main switch is clamped, so a low voltage switch with low ON resistance can be used to reduce the conduction loss which results in the efficiency improvement. A detailed discussion on the operating principle and steady-state analyses are presented in the paper. To justify the theoretical analysis, experimental results of a 200W 40/400V prototype is presented. In addition, the conducted electromagnetic emissions are measured which shows a good EMC performance.
