  • Cryptomeria japonica plantation was monitored every year during 15 years from 1983 to 1997 for stem diameter and volume. The reciprocal equation, 1/Y = A + B/N, was applied to the relationship between cumulative volume Y and cumulative number N from the largest tree in the stand each year. The parameters A and B, which means respectively the reciprocal of an asymptotic value of total stand stem volume and the reciprocal of the maximum stem volume, are related by a power function. The power functional relationship between A and B derived a linear relationship of B-points ( $N_{B}$, $V_{B}$; $N_{B}$ = B/A, $Y_{B}$ = 1/2A) of each Y-N curve on log-log coordinates. The gradient of B-point line was so steep that the Y-N curve moved parallel upward year by year. The time trajectory of mean stem volume (W) and density ($\rho$) provided evidence in favor of the 3/2 power law of self-thinning, because the gradient of W - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates approximated to -3/2 at the final stage of stand development. On the basis of the results of Y-N curves and W - $\rho$ trajectory, the time trajectory of maximum stem volume $W_{max obs}$ and $\rho$ was derived theoretically. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates is calculated to be -0.6105 at the final stage. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory was steeper than that of W - $\rho$ trajectory at the early stage, while the former is gentler than the latter at the later stage.stage.e.age.e.

  • At present, the polymer-modified mortars are used as high-performance as well as multi-functional materials in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to synthesize polymer to modify in cement mortars and make test samples to understand pore size distribution. This paper deals with the effect of monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate(MMA/BA) latexes synthesized through emulsion polymerization. From the results, we knew that the pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate latexes at bound MMA contents of 70 and 60 percent is 7.5-75cm$^3$/g and the fine pore volume is increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio. The total pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is linearly reduced with an increase in the bound MMA content and increased in the polymer-cement ratio.

  • To examine the quality characteristics of bread made of different amounts of chia seed powder, a functional food ingredient, this study made bread by adding chia seed powder by 1%, 3%, and 5% of the flour weight. When bread dough properties were determined using mixograph, all doughs were appropriate for bread-making. In the evaluation of fermentation rate, the dough with 3% of chia seed powder CS 3 showed the most favorable fermentation rate during the first 60-min fermentation of the bread. According to CrumbScan, the fineness of bread pores were higher in control group than bread loaves containing chia seed powder. The volume of bread in control group was significantly lower than those of other experimental groups. The volume and specific volume were highest when chia seed powder was added by 3%. According to preference analysis, appearance and taste was best in CS 3, showing the highest overall score in preference. Therefore, the optimum amount of chia seed powder is identified to be 3% in bread-making.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of cantilever arches with constant volume. Its cross-sectional shape is the regular polygon whose depth is varied with the linear functional fashion. The non-dimensional differential equations governing the free vibration of such arch are derived and solved numerically for calculating the natural frequencies. As the numerical results, the effects of arch parameters such as side number of cross section, section ratio and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies are reported in figures.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the parabolic hollowed beam-columns with constant volume. The cross sections of beam-column taper are the hollowed regular polygons whose depths are varied with the parabolic functional fashion. Volumes of the objective beam-columns are always held constant regardless given geometrical conditions. Ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam-columns are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam-column parameters such as end constraints, side number, section ratio, thickness ratio and axial load are reported in tables and figures.

  • This study deals with the free vibrations and buckling loads of column with clamped-spring ends and constant volume. The column has the regular polygon cross-section whose depth is varied with the linear functional fashion. The differential equation governing the free vibration of such column is derived in which the effect of axial load is included. The differential equation is solved numerically for calculating frequencies. By using the relationship between loads and frequencies, the buckling loads are also obtained.

  • As a first attempt, an inverse hybrid numerical method for small scale parameter estimation of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams using measured frequencies is presented. The governing equations are obtained with the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity assumptions and the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The equations are discretized by using the differential quadrature method (DQM). The discretized equations are transferred from temporal domain to frequency domain and frequencies of the nanobeam are obtained. By applying random error to these frequencies, measured frequencies are generated. The measured frequencies are considered as input data and inversely, the small scale parameter of the beam is obtained by minimizing a defined functional. The functional is defined as root mean square error between the measured frequencies and calculated frequencies by the DQM. Then, the conjugate gradient (CG) optimization method is employed to minimize the functional and the small scale parameter is obtained. Efficiency, convergence and accuracy of the presented hybrid method for small scale parameter estimation of the beams for different applied random error, boundary conditions, length-to-thickness ratio and volume fraction coefficients are demonstrated.

  • The atmospheric pressure plasma treatments ($Ar/O_2$ and $Ar/N_2$) of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were carried out to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on carbon surfaces in order to enhance the hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) adsorption. Surface properties of the ACFs were determined by XPS and SEM. $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms were investigated by BET and D-R (Dubinin-Radushkevich) plot methods. The HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by HCl detecting tubes (range:1~40 or 40~1000 ppm). As experimental results, it was found that all plasma-treated ACFs showed the decrease in the pore volume, but the HCl removal efficiency showed higher level than that of the untreated ACFs. This result indicated that the plasma treatments led to the conformation of hydrophilic functional groups on the carbon surfaces, resulting in the increase of the interaction between the ACFs and HCl gas.

  • The scope of this work investigates the relationship between the amount of oxygen-functional groups and hydrogen adsorption capacity with different concentrations of phosphoric acid. The amount of oxygen-functional groups of activated carbons (ACs) is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effects of chemical treatments on the pore structures of ACs are investigated by $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. The hydrogen adsorption capacity is measured by $H_2$ isothermal adsorption at 298 K and 100 bar. In the results, the specific surface area and pore volume slightly decreased with the chemical treatments due to the pore collapsing behaviors, but the hydrogen storage capacity was increased by the oxygen-functional group characteristics of AC surfaces, resulting from enhanced electron acceptor-donor interaction at interfaces.
