  • Koreans began to undertake the conservation of their art and architectural artifacts approximately fifty years ago after modern concept of conservation were introduced by japanese during the Japanese Colonial Period(1910-1945). But still the modern concept of conservation is not clear to many Korean conservators because they have been concerned about conservation techniques to recover the original from of the remains be destroyed. Also, Korean conservation practice has neglected the philosophical issues and ethics of conservation. So, in this article, I described various terms referring to 'conservation' which have been used in western countries, Japan, China, and Korea, and compared their similarities and differences to have more clear idea on the modern concept of conservation. In the next chapter, I summarized several theoretical issues which had been discussed among western conservators over the centuries. Specially, I described closely the modern issues and ethics which have been presented in the twentieth century. As many conservation projects in Korea have resulted unsatisfactorily or been suspended altogether, because lacking a coherent theoretical dialogue on conservation and discussing an ethical issues of conservation. Therefore, I believe that more vigorous dialogue on these issues in Korea may lead conservators to consider their tasks in a more productive light, and the Korean artifacts may preserve well.

  • This study is a proposal for the positive application of collage techniques into the process of interior design. For that, we need to set up the appropriate definitions of collage and to analyze its properties as a creative design methode of that field, in the basis of the twentieth-century art history. The study is divided into three sections as follows: 1) The traces of collage in the art movements such as Cubism, Dada, Surealism, and Pop art will be researched in terms of art concepts, appearances and, properties. 2) The relationships between collage and the main ideas of those art movements, as mentioned above, will be discussed for proving that collage is such an effective techniques as to erdxxly Post-modem ideas. 3) The examples of collage techniques and their effects appearing in Post-modem interior spaces will be surveyed for the purpose of proving its abilities as a creative design methode in interior design. Further studies should be succeeded for suggesting practical and educational models of its application.

  • Large-scale coastal construction projects, such as land reclamation and dykes, were constructed from the late twentieth century in Yoobu-Do region. Land reclamation combined with the dynamics of tidal currents may have accelerated local sedimentation and erosion resulting in rapid reformation of coastal topography. This study presents the results of the topography changes around Yoobu-Do by large-scale coastal constructions using time-series waterline extraction technique of Landsat TM/ETM+ data acquired from 1998 to 2012. Furthermore, the Freeman-Durden decomposition was applied to fully polarimetric RADARSAT-2 SAR data in order to analyze the scattering mechanisms of the deposited surface. According to the case study, the deposition areas were over 4.5 $km^2$ and distributed in the east, northeast, and west of Yoobu-Do. In the eastern deposition area, it was found that the scattering mechanism was difference from other deposition areas possibly indicating that different types of soil were deposited.

  • The development of technology has always been influencing the worldview of the time, and this has been embodied through artistic media and contents throughout history. This paper begins with an overview on how the notion of movement in art has developed with the juxtaposition of materiality and immateriality or the conversion between the two by rethinking Kinetic Art which was popularized in the mid-twentieth century in America and Europe. Then, this is compared with New Media Art which employs advanced digital media techniques to generate virtual images. New Media Art requires some kinds of physical mechanisms and space for the embodiment of virtual images to some extent. The coexistence of material and immaterial aspects of New Media art is investigated through the contextualization with certain aspects of Kinetic Art.

  • Rhetoric, simply defined, is the art of persuasion. Gui Bonsiepe, Robin Kinross, Hanno, Ehses and Richard Buchanan have all spoken of rhetoric as an element of the theory of design. St. Joost Academy in the Netherlands has tried to present the theory and practice of a new kind of designing based on rhetoric since 1995. Post-St Joost was the name of the experimental graduate programme. They adopted visual rhetoric as a matrix for setting up a new type of exercise and assignment in design education. In this paper, 1 have tried to show that rhetorical approach can play an important role in the development of a view of design as a discipline in its own right. The first chapter looks at the brief history of rhetoric in western culture. And the following chapter focuses on the development of design rhetoric and visual rhetoric in the twentieth century. 1 hope this essay will contribute to find the designerly way of knowing, thinking and doing.

  • It IS timely and meaningful to research into the procedure of the establishment of the design movement and its role in early twentieth century Britain, which underwent a similar situation to that of current Korea, especially when the development of industrial design is thought to be essential in enhancing nation's competitive power. Besides, the study of the British design movement and design policies resulting from it will set a valuablt, example for us to follow in forming design policies for the betterment of design and in making guidelines for the Korean design movement. Therefore, first. I studil'd circumstances of the period when D.I.:\ was established and the German design movement as well as principles of German I}I.A. as foundation stones for it. Then. I discussed both D.I.A. activities and major figures of the D.I.A. movement in 1~):!O's, l~nO's and l~)~O's. In conclusion, I indicated [xJsitive and negative aspects of the role of D.l.:\.

  • Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others. Titles of the books reviewed in this article are as follows. 1. Rao, C. Radhakrishna(1997). Statistics and Truth : Putting Chance to Work, Second edition, World Scientific. 2. Best, Joel (2001). Damnel lies and Statistics : Understanding Numbers from the Media, Politicians, and Activists, University of California Press. 3. Bennett, Deborah J. (1998). Randomness, Harvard University Press; 4. Salsburg, David (2001). The Lady Tasting Tea : How Statistics Revolutionized Science in the Twentieth Century, W. H. Freeman.

  • Advanced countries in aerospace have been struggle to realize the hypersonic air-breathing system since originating the concept of the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system during the first half of the twentieth century. At last, NASA's X-43A Hyper-X did successful Mach 10 flight in November 2004. Each countries are running the program to applicate this hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system to SSTO(Single Stage to Orbit) or TSTO(Two Stage to Orbit) vehicle or hypersonic missile system at present. In this paper, we wrote the history and current issues of the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system and hypersonic flight with the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system.

  • EU and NAFTA which are huge regional economic blocs came out the world economy at the end of the twentieth century. It is the first that Europe has been trying to establish regional economic integration which is a revolutionary change to world economy. So that regional economic integration of Europe(European Union) has been improving to make a complete economic political integration. This paper analyzes trade creation effect for joining European Union(EU) of Central Eastern European countries with random effect estimation and fixed effect estimation. 12 Central Eastern European countries have become membership states of EU since 2004 is able to get 27.4% of trade increase effect on average between old and new membership countries one another as well as between new membership countries one another respectively. It is very important for some countries have a plan to affiliate to EU in the future to realize such a big effect if they are in.

  • The ways in which twentieth-century designers have transformated com mom objects into creative new visions are seemingly infinite yet they conform to certain basic formulas. A remarkable method in those basic formulas can be a transformation. The purpose of this paper is to question what transformation is. After viewing and researching many number of examples of design and how designer dealt with issues of transformation, the result of this paper is as follows. Functional elements such as bases, handles, and openings are inverted in meaning or exaggerated in scale. Designers play upon what we normally expect from metal, glass, and other standard materials; making hard materials seem soft, making soft materials seem hard, transferring techniques appropriate for one material to another. Designer employed an endless variety of plays on functional elements and questioned the nature of materials I concluded that 'transformation in design is the main method of the creative working process for the designer.
