Controlling the morphology of a metal nanocrystal is critical to modern materials chemistry because its physical and chemical properties can be easily and widely tuned by tailoring the size and shape. Combined with ease of synthesis and processing, metal nanocrystals with desired morphologies and thus properties are promising candidates for a wide variety of applications in catalysis, sensing, imaging, electronics, and photonics, and medicine. In this talk, I would like to introduce my recent research results on the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals using a simple aqueous method. This water-based system provides a number of merits such as simplicity, convenience, and the potential for large-scale production and enables us to synthesize metal nanocrystals with a rich variety of shapes such as truncated octahedron, cubes, bars, octahedrons, and thin plates. The ability to control the shape of metal nanocrystals provides a great opportunity to systematically investigate their catalytic and optical properties.
Recent series of flooding events in urban area has brought a growing concern on storage facilities as a major stormwater management method. The Korean Ministry of Environment has announced diverse plans to tackle the problem, including plans for multi-purpose storages which deal both the stormwater and wastewater. Even though storages can be categorized for different perspectives, classification of possible storages in urban area has not been throughly studied so far. This study investigated diverse references of urban storages and suggested systematic classifications on structural, functional and some other basis. Structural classification mainly concerns structural shape of facilities and includes (1)Cisterns & Rain barrels, (2)Forebays, (3)Dry basins, (4)Wet basins and (5)Constructed wetland. Those functions can be (1)flood prevention (2)water quality control and (3)reuse of stored water. Other criteria that categorize storages depend on (1)height, (2)location, (3)configuration, (4)depth, (5)site of the installation and (6)shape.

As ocean resources in shallow water areas are being exhausted, deep sea development is becoming common these days. Therefore floating type offshore structures are more competitive than fixed type structures, and FPSO is the most popular one these days. FPSO's are generally operated in a specific region and positioned to meet mostly head or bow waves in order to reduce roll motions. However this makes these vessels more vulnerable to green water around the bow region, and therefore the bow shape must be properly designed to mitigate green water damage. In the present study, experimental results for three different FPSO bow shapes in regular head waves were analyzed and compared to each other. Also CFD computations were carried out as a sample validation case for the database built for CFD code validation.

In this study, a numerical analysis is made on the ice-formation for laminar water flow inside a stenotic tube. The study takes into account the interaction between the laminar flow and the stenotic port in the circular tube. The purpose of the present numerical investigation is to assess the effect of a stenotic shape on the instantaneous shape of the flow passage during freezing upstream/downstream of the stenotic channel. In the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the solid and liquid regions are resolved. In a channel flow between parallel plates, the agreement between the of predictions and the available experimental data is very good. Numerical analyses are performed for parametric variations of the position and heights of stenotic shape and flow rate. The results show that the stenotic shape has the great effect on the thickness of the solidification layer inside the tube. As the height of a stenosis grows and the length of a stenosis decreases, the ice layer thickness near the stenotic port is thinner, due to backward flow caused by the sudden expansion of a water tunnel. It is found that the flow passage has a slight uniform taper up to the stenotic channel, at which a sudden expansion is observed. It is also shown that the ice layer becomes more fat in accordance with its Reynolds number.
This paper proposes the Focused beamforming to estimate the location of target residing near to the observation platform in the underwater environment. The Focused beamforming technique provides the location of target by the coherent summation of a series of incident spherical waveforms considering distinct propagation delay times at the sensor array. But due to the movement of the observation platform and the variation of the underwater environment, the shape of the sensor array is no longer to be linear but it becomes distorted as the platform moves. Thus the Focused beamforming should be peformed regarding to the geometric shape variation at each time. To estimate the target location, the artificial image plane comprised of cells is constructed, and the delays are calculated from each cell where the target could be proximity to sensors for the coherent summation. After the coherent combining, the beam pattern can be obtained through the Focused beamforming on the image plane. Futhermore to compensate the variation of the shape of the sensor array, the paper utilizes the Nth-order polynomial approximation to estimate the shape of the sensor array obeying the water pulley modeling. Simulation results show the performance of the Focused beamforming for different frequency bands of the radiated signal.

This study analyzes the velocity and pressure incurred by protruding shapes installed within the inlet part of a pressurized membrane module during operation to determine the fluid flow distribution. In this paper, to find the flow distribution within a module, it investigates the velocity and pressure values at cross-sectional and outlet planes, and 9 sections classified on outlet plane using computational fluid dynamics. From the Reynolds number (Re), the fluid flow was estimated to be turbulent when the Re exceeded 4,000. In the vertical cross-sectional plane, shape 4 and 6 (round-type protrusion) showed the relatively high velocity of 0.535 m/s and 0.558 m/s, respectively, indicating a uniform flow distribution. From the velocity and pressure at the outlet, shape 4 also displayed a relatively uniform fluid velocity and pressure, indicating that fluid from the inlet rapidly and uniformly reached the outlet, however, from detailed data of velocity, pressure and flowrate obtained from 9 sections at the outlet, shape 6 revealed the low standard deviations for each section. Therefore, shape 6 was deemed to induce the ideal flow, since it maintained a uniform pressure, velocity and flowrate distribution.

In this study, the deformation behavior of Daegok dam during the construction was analyzed based on the measurement data and a comparative analysis with foreign CFRD measurements was performed. From measuring settlements of Daegok dam with depth, overall behavior was evaluated to be consistent with measured data of other CFRD dams. In addition, construction modulus, void ratio and shape factor were also evaluated to be major factors in predicting the settlement behavior during construction of CFRD-typed dam from measured data of 38 CFRD-typed dams, and the maximum internal settlement is proportional to the void ratio. From the relationship between the maximum internal settlement and the height of a dam, 26 dams were assessed to have its relative modulus ranging between 0.001 and 0.01. In case of general CFRD, the average modulus of maximum internal settlement to the height of a dam is estimated to be 0.005. In case of a low void ratio, the construction modulus was high with its shape factor below 4. On the other hand, in case of a high void ratio, the relative settlement rate was high with its shape factor more than 4.
This paper aims to study the fracture mechanism of rocks under the 'u'shape cutters considering the effects of crack (pre-existing crack) distances, crack spacing and crack inclination angles. The effects of loading rates on the rock fragmentation underneath these cutters have been also studied. For this purpose, nine experimental samples with dimensions of 5 cm×10 cm×10 cm consisting of the non-persistent cracks were prepared. The first three specimens' sets had one non-persistent crack (pre-existing crack) with a length of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45°, and 90°. The spacing between the crack and the "u" shape cutter was 2 cm. The second three specimens" set had one non-persistent crack with a length of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45°, and 90° but the spacing between pre-existing crack and the "u" shape cutter was 4 cm. The third three specimens'set has two non-persistent cracks with lengths of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45° and 90°. The spacing between the upper crack and the "u" shape cutter was 2 cm and the spacing between the lower crack and the upper crack was 2 cm. The samples were tested under a loading rate of 0.005 mm/s. concurrent with the experimental investigation. The numerical simulations were performed on the modeled samples with non-persistent cracks using PFC2D. These models were tested under three different loading rates of 0.005 mm/s, 0.01 mm/sec and 0.02 mm/sec. These results show that the crack number, crack spacing, crack angularity, and loading rate has important effects on the crack growth mechanism in the rocks underneath the "u" shape cutters. In addition, the failure modes and the fracture patterns in the experimental tests and numerical simulations are similar to one another showing the validity and accuracy of the current study.
Atmospheric correction of Landsat Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VIS/NIR) over aquatic environment is more demanding than over land because the signal from the water column is small and it carries immense information about biogeochemical variables in the ocean. This paper introduces two methods, a modified dark-pixel substraction technique (path--extraction) and our spectral shape matching method (SSMM), for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters (Morel and Prieur, 1977) around Korean peninsula. The results of these methods are compared with the classical atmospheric correction approaches based on the 6S radiative transfer model and standard SeaWiFS atmospheric algorithm. The atmospheric correction scheme using 6S radiative transfer code assumes a standard atmosphere with constant aerosol loading and a uniform, Lambertian surface, while the path-extraction assumes that the total radiance (L/sub TOA/) of a pixel of the black ocean (referred by Antoine and Morel, 1999) in a given image is considered as the path signal, which remains constant over, at least, the sub scene of Landsat VIS/NIR imagery. The assumption of SSMM is nearly similar, but it extracts the path signal from the L/sub TOA/ by matching-up the in-situ data of water-leaving radiance, for typical clear and turbid waters, and extrapolate it to be the spatially homogeneous contribution of the scattered signal after complex interaction of light with atmospheric aerosols and Raleigh particles, and direct reflection of light on the sea surface. The overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ spectra, but yields significant errors for clear waters due to the invalid assumption of zero water-leaving radiance for the black ocean pixels. Because of the standard atmosphere with constant aerosols and models adopted in 6S radiative transfer code, a large error is possible between the retrieved and in-situ spectra. The efficiency of spectral shape matching has also been explored, using SeaWiFS imagery for turbid waters and compared with that of the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which falls in highly turbid waters, due to the assumption that values of water-leaving radiance in the two NIR bands are negligible to enable retrieval of aerosol reflectance in the correction of ocean color imagery. Validation suggests that accurate the retrieval of water-leaving radiance is not feasible with the invalid assumption of the classical algorithms, but is feasible with SSMM.
The influence of the improvement of grain shape of the coarse aggregate to the unit powder content of concrete and the fine aggregate ratio for the increase of the flowability and segregation resistance of high performance concrete was examined. According to the experimental results, flowability and compacting of concrete presents best states in the S/a which has the smallest 패야 ratio. The coarse aggregate after improvement of grain shape, that has changed from the 0.68 of spherical rate of disk shape to 0.73, led fine aggregate ratio to be down 6% (i.e from 47% to 41%). The improvement of grain shape of the coarse aggregate also led the lowest unit powder content to be down 60kg/㎥ (ie from 530kg/㎥ to 470kg/㎥). And approximate 10% of unit water content has been reduced as unit powder content was down. However, the compressive strength after the improvement of grain shape of the coarse aggregate decreased to 5% due to decrease of adhesiveness of the aggregate and cement paste.
