Purpose - As the members of the baby boomer generation have retired in earnest, the start-up market has received more attention than ever before. According to recent statistical data, an increasing number of entrepreneurs are in their fifties. There has been a continuous increase in promotional materials on small business issues published by start-ups. This means that senior start-ups have increased in number. A number of support systems have been established for youth start-ups, but there are few government support policies in place for the senior start-up market. Thus, this study suggests a number of constructive alternatives from the perspective of government policy and marketing strategy for entrepreneurs, in order to generate competitiveness in the start-up process, through examining the current state of the senior start-up and by diagnosing extant problems. Research design, data, methodology - This study gives a number of options regarding the government's support policies and the securing of competitiveness in order to vitalize senior business start-ups. As for the government's support policies, funding support policy, publicizing business start-up policies, and operating systematic mentoring policies before retirement have all been covered. In particular, in order for senior business start-ups to become competitive, development through mutual relations with diverse policies is urgently needed. The aging population is becoming an issue in Korea, so businesses for the aged, and the creation of jobs for these people, will become a social issue. Senior business start-ups are playing an important role in expanding enterprise productivity, in addition to enhancing national competitiveness. Expanding senior business start-ups is important, because they also serve to expand the national infrastructure. Productivity increase through continuous expansion is thus recommended. Results - In order to expand the competitiveness of business start-ups, marketing-related observations and learning in regard to customers are necessary for the baby boomer generation, and competitiveness for seniors is urgently needed. Conclusions - Studies on the business start-up policies for the domestic baby boomer generation are almost non-existent, and systematic studies on small businesses are necessary. Only the government is providing statistical studies for small businesses, and such research remains at a general level for entrepreneurs. Therefore, a support system that can actually assist entrepreneurs is essential. Continuous business start-up studies with respect to the baby boomers should be vitalized, to invigorate studies on competition. In order to supplement and strengthen foundational support, senior business start-ups must develop various competitive capabilities with a focus on the customer. The government and the various stakeholder agencies and organizations involved with start-up businesses must find ways to offer support to founders. Such support should include access to knowledge and legal and consultancy services in order to incubate the rapid increase in start-ups founded by seniors. Government support projects should be expanded to meet this end.
This study was conducted in order to improve nutritional support based on analysis of the eating habits and training schedule of junior and senior high school fencers. A survey was conducted on 30 fencers (junior boys=9, girls=7; senior boys=4, girls=10) using a questionnaire. Total daily calorie intakes were 2325.7${\pm}$1168.5 kcal (boy), 2344.0${\pm}$786.3 kcal (girl) for junior fencers and 2183.3${\pm}$726.6 kcal (boys), 2654.4${\pm}$1043.6 kcal (girls) for senior fencers. Nutrients below the RDIs were riboflavin and vitamin C for junior boy fencers and vitamin A, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C for senior boy fencers. The rates of the participants who had obtained nutritional information were 44.4% (boys) and 14.3% (girls) for junior fencers and 50.0% (boys) and 80.0% (girls) for senior fencers. Approximately half of the fencers had meals twice a day (55.6% for junior boy fencers, 57.1% for junior girl fencers, and 50.0% for senior fencers). The number of the fencers who were interested in nutrition varied: 66.7% and 28.6% of the junior boy and girl fencers answered they were interested in nutrition, while 25% and 60% of the senior boy and girl fencers showed interest in nutrition issues. Recommendations of total calories were 2,874 kcal (boys) and 2,377 kcal (girls) for junior fencers and 3,398 kcal (boys) and 2,375 kcal (girls) for senior fencers respectively. A dietary plan for the fencing players during training periods was designed to improve their health and performance. Athletes can simultaneously refuel and repair their bodies while contributing to their rehydration goals by consuming fluids that are sources of carbohydrates and protein, e.g., flavored milk and liquid meal supplement. Specific sport nutrition education applicable to athletes, especially young athletes, is recommended under professional support. Professionals may then target particular categories of athletes for the development of educational programs aimed at improving growth and athletic performance.
Objective: The purpose of the study is to develop quantitative usability evaluation criteria for senior-friendly autonomous transportation robot. Background: The Republic of Korea has become the most rapidly aging society, and is anticipated to enter the post-aged society in 2026. To raise the quality of life of a senior with limited mobility and to reduce the burden of caregivers, many high-tech assistive products with information technologies are developed nowadays. The senior-friendly autonomous transportation robot is one person robot vehicle to move a senior to the destination for hospitals, nursing homes or silver town complex. With built-in navigation system and environmental monitoring censors, it automatically seeks the path to the destination and avoids collision to obstacles and pedestrians on the way. Due to the early stage of the product, few usability studies in this field have been done, mostly on general service robots to assist seniors, power wheelchairs and delivery robots. ISO and KS standards for the service robots are focused on safety. Method: Based on the reference usability index, the early draft of the usability evaluation questionnaires was developed. After small group tests and interviews, the experts modified the initial draft to the Usability Evaluation Criteria for Senior-Friendly Autonomous Transportation Robot (UEC-SFATR). Result: UEC-SFATR consisted of 4 subscales - Safety, Controllability, Efficiency and Satisfaction. All of the 4 subscales of UEC-SFATR were passed the reliability criteria by 4 groups of seniors, divided by gender and familiarity of smart-devices. Conclusion: UEC-SFATR covers wider area of user experiences of the SFATR and is a good measurement tool to help both the users and developers of the robot. Application: This study provides guide to the future product development and product competitiveness evaluation by quantifying user experiences for the SFATR.
Light is an essential environmental element for elderly people to do various activities. At senior welfare centers, healthy indoor lighting is especially necessary because the facilities are used by the elderly to perform their mostly indoor activities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate light environments at senior welfare centers for well-being lighting characteristics. We based the study on the 'Biophilia' theory, a concept related to health from happiness. Thus, this study is mainly based on literary review and survey research. For this, we conducted a location focused field study to identify the current state of the lighting environments at senior welfare centers in Busan, South Korea. First, we constructed structural questionnaire to evaluate lighting environment based on 'Light and Space' biophilia theory. Then, to survey subjective evaluation, the participant of research included total of 122 senior welfare center users. Based on the results of this research, the conclusions are as follows; 1) overall, it seems that the overall result of the light environmental evaluation seems to be high because the evaluated facilities in the case survey in large-scale were recently built elderly welfare centers. 2) most of the healing design elements are focused on the introduction of natural light and psychological influence. The satisfaction with actual natural light is evaluated to be high. Although shadow and reflected light are very important in discrimination and recognition of indoor space and wayfinding, the evaluation of reflected light and shadow was low for the study. 3) items that are related to the functionality of the light were highly evaluated, while the items that are related to the spatiality of the light were rated poorly. This study has its significance when examining the effects of light environments within the welfare center form of the perspective of senior citizens. It can be referenced when reconsidering the recognition of light environment as a major consideration factor to establish a desirable senior welfare center environment.
For the purpose of developing 'Web-Based Nutritional Education Program', this study analyzed nutritional problems of junior/senior high school students and set appropriate instructional goals for nutritional education program. Survey questionnaires were distributed from October 21,2002 to October 26, 2002 to a total of 564 students at three junior high schools and five senior high schools located in Seoul. The total number of questionnaires collected and used in our study was 479, which is 84.9% of the total questionnaires distributed. According to the survey results, three student groups (male and female students at junior high schools and female students at senior high schools) had lower than an ideal body weight. In case of their Basal Metabolic Indices (BMI), the female students and junior high school students showed a tendency to be underweight, while the other three student groups were within the normal range. The result of the survey showed that all four groups of students showed a deficiency in nutrient intake of calories, calcium and thiamin when compared with Korean RDA. Particularly, in the case of the female students at senior high schools, the deficiency of iron intake was a problem. The survey about food attitudes and food habits of the students showed that the senior high school students had more problems when compared with their junior high school counterparts (p < .001). Therefore, the instructional goals of nutritional education program were set as follows: 1) To improve the level of understanding and the perception of junior and senior high school students about the importance of a dietary lifestyle. 2) To change food attitudes and nutritional knowledge related to individual dietary 1ifestyle, so as to maintain good health through the enhancement of the students' physical activities. We found out that it is critically important to factor in the existing problems of food attitudes and food habits, as well as nutrient intake among junior and senor high school students when setting objectives for nutritional education programs. The purpose of this study was to gain understanding about residential satisfaction and preference of the members of the future elderly generation who have an intention to develop senior congregate housing. The data for this study were collected from 600 participants who were in their 40s to 60s, residing in Seoul, and who have an intention to develop senior congregate housing. The data collection spanned from December 1st to 20th, 2004. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the respondents who had a higher level of education, higher income, and a high-ranking job showed relatively higher residential satisfaction with their present house. Similar satisfaction level came between their present house and expecting ones in their later life. Financial responsibility was the most serious expected problem when they continue living in the present house in the later life. It means that the economic ability is the primary factor that determines whether they will have a stable life later. Secondly, as for the preference for the senior housing developer type, the group who preferred collectively developed senior congregate housing far outnumbered the other who preferred independent developer type. Also, the group who preferred collective developer type had higher economic ability than that of the other. These results indicate that above all, economic competence is the must significant variable, which should be considered in the future life and residential planning for the elderly. Korean senior congregate housing models should be developed based upon elaborate research. It is also necessary to develop different types of housing, such as a more practical type and a high quality type, as well as to respond to different kinds of developmental objectives, such as marketability and public benefit.

The Korean society is currently showing a decrease in the child population and a rapid increase in the elderly population due to low birth rates and aging, but the current park system does not reflect the changing population structure. This study aimed to find ways to plan and promote use of senior-friendly parks for the aging society. The results are as follows. First, the elderly mostly gathered in Tapgol Park and Jongmyo Park which were accessible to subways and close to amenities and traditional markets. The elders usually gathered around buffer zones or green spaces set up to protect cultural heritages. Second, many elderly users were observed in Osolgil Silver Park and Sinteuri Park which were renovated with senior-friendly concept. These parks were recognized as places that the elderly people could visit without minding users of other generations because the elderly users were ensured by words such as 'seniors only' or 'senior-friendly'. Third, the importance of the locational conditions for the senior-friendly parks should be mentioned. A senior-friendly park must be located in an urban center to have convenient access to transportation, secure large green spaces, and make elderly users feel at ease with social connectivity when they use the amenities there. Fourth, the survey results showed that elderly people visited parks to exerciseand take a walk (track),by age, older age groups visited the park to socialize with other elders around their age. Fifth, the most desired facilities for constructing senior-friendly parks were fitness equipment, and sports facilities like a trail, track, and gateball field, and in some cases, vegetable gardens and indoor rest area to avoid wind in cold weather.
