  • Biodiversity af yeasts in various natural environments including soils, swamps and plants was investigated. By molecular identification methods based on the partial sequences of 265 rDNA, 69 isolates were assigned to 44 taxa including 27 known species. The remaining 17 taxa could potentially form new species. All of them were classified into Ascomycota, Hymenomycetes, Urediniomycetes and Ustilaginomycetes. Ascomycetous and ustilaginomycetous yeasts were generally isolated from flower samples, and hymenomycetous and urediniomycetous yeasts were generally isolated from soil samples. Distribution of yeast groups exhibited geographical variation. Yeast biodiversity of root sail also varied according to the associated plant species.

  • This study examines the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance in the Republic of Korea armed forces and explores whether job stress mediates the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance. The research questions are: (1) Does intrinsic motivation influence individual performance in military organizations? (2) Does job stress impact individual performance? and (3) Does job stress mediate the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individual performance? The study utilizes data collected from a 350 soldiers survey in the Special Forces Brigade and Special Assault Commando Regiment of the Republic of Korea's Army. We use structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the mediation role among intrinsic motivation, job stress, and individuals' performance. Research findings suggest that intrinsic motivation negatively impacts job stress. We also find that job stress has a positive effect on firearm skills. Moreover, the study reveals that the relationship between intrinsic motivation and firearm skills is partially mediated by job stress.

  • Safety is essential for organizations operating in high-risk environments, such as the Navy. Effective safety management requires continuous improvement and supplementation, commonly achieved through the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle. Despite reinforced safety regulations and expanded education, safety accidents persist in the Navy, indicating a need to enhance the safety accident analysis and classification system. This study aims to analyze and identify the shortcomings of the current Navy safety accident classification system to establish a more effective framework. By doing so, we will be able to register the results of safety accidents, identify their root causes, and propose a 12-digit Navy safety accident classification code. This code will contribute to the development of mid- to long-term safety management policies.

  • In this study, the physics-based model and machine learning technique were used to conduct model-assisted probability of detection (MAPOD) experiments. The possibility of using in-service cracked parts was also investigated. Bolt hole shaped specimens with fatigue crack on the hole surface were inspected using eddy current inspection. Owing to MAPOD, the number of experimental factors decreased significantly. The uncertainty in the crack length measurement for in-service cracked parts was considered by the application of Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a vaccine-preventable mosquito-borne disease caused by infection with the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). JEV has five genotypes, including genotype V (GV), which is considered ancestral to the other genotypes. The first GV strain, GV Muar, was isolated from a Malayan patient in 1952 and GV did not reappear for 57 years until GV XZ0934 was isolated from a mosquito sample in China. Since 2010, 21 GV strains have been identified in Republic of Korea (ROK). Both GV Muar and GV XZ0934 are more pathogenic than other GI/GIII strains and are serologically distinct. However, because the ROK's GV strains have not been experimentally tested, their characteristics are not known. Characterization of the ROK's isolates is needed to enable development of effective GV strain-based vaccines to protect against GV infections.

  • Long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission is the most widely studied model for learning and memory. However its mechanisms are not clearly elucidated and are a subject for intense investigation. Previous attempts to decipher cellular mechanisms and network properties involved a current-source density analysis (CSDA) of the LTP from small animal hippocampus measured with a limited number of microelectrodes (typically <3), only revealing limited nature of spatiotemporal dynamics. Recent advancement in multi-electrode array (MEA) technology allows continuous and simultaneous recordings of LTP with more than 60 electrodes. However CSDA via the standard Laplacian transform is still limited due to its relatively high sensitivity toward noise, inability of resolving overlapped current sources and sinks, and its requirement for tissue conductivity values. In this study, we propose a new methodology for improved CSDA. Independent component analysis and its joint use (i.e., Joint-ICA) are applied to extract spatiotemporal components of LTP. The results show that ICA and Joint-ICA are capable of extracting independent spatiotemporal components of LTP generators. The ICs of LTP indicate the reversing roles of current sources and sinks which are associated with LTP.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil collected in Daegu City and Cheongyang County, Republic of Korea. Among 11 strains isolated in this study, nine strains were previously reported and two strains were unreported in Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of the D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Of the two unrecorded yeast strains, CY-9-10C belongs to the genus Mrakia (family Mrakiaceae, order Cystofilobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes) and PG3-4-10C belongs to the genus Slooffia (family Chrysozymaceae, order Microbotryomycetes incertae sedis, class Microbotryomycetes). Both strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research described the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.

  • Three cases of cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) were diagnosed in a returnee from a trip to Thailand and in 2 domestic farmers during July and September, 2003. The linear and serpiginous skin lesions on the lower extremities were presented in all 3 cases. Routine laboratory findings were normal. In the imported case, a $650\times30{\mu}m$ sized filariform nematode larva, presumably a species of hookworm, was detected in the lesion. All cases were treat-ed with 400 mg albendazole once daily for 3-5 days, and their skin lesions gradually improved. In the present study, a causative agent of CLM was isolated for the first time in the Republic of Korea. Moreover, we speculate that CLM is prevalent in farmers who are in frequent contact with soil in the Republic of Korea.

  • Fungi are cosmopolitan and they occupy diverse niches as consumers, producers, and decomposers. They play critical roles in the environment by enabling nutrient cycling and generating a plethora of secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify and characterize fungal strains isolated from diverse sources on Muui Island, Republic of Korea. In 2023, a total of 86 fungal strains were collected and examined. Investigation of the morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of multiple barcode loci identified one putative novel species and two species previously unrecorded in the Republic of Korea: Colletotrichum sp., Colletotrichum guizhouense, and Fusarium brachygibbosum. This study provides a comprehensive description of their molecular phylogenies and morphological characteristics. These findings will contribute to the existing knowledge about fungal species in the Republic of Korea and future research on the fungal diversity on Muui Island.
