  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate eye dominance and reading performance based on eye movements and reading speed. Methods: The eye dominance of 30 subjects was determined using the sighting test (hole formed by hands). The subjects were asked to read the numerical reading material aloud in English from left to right and from right to left at random. The number of saccades, regressions, and inter-fixations per minute was calculated using Visual-Oculography (VOG) and the reading speed was recorded as number of characters per minute using stopwatch. Results: No significant differences in reading speed among right and left eye dominant subjects as they read from left to right and right to left directions (p>0.05). However, left eye dominant subjects were found to read significantly faster compared to right eye dominant subjects in both directions of reading (p<0.05). In term of eye movement patterns, no significant differences in saccades, regressions, and inter-fixations per minute were found between subjects with right eye dominance and left eye dominance for both reading directions (p>0.05). Conclusions: Reading performance in term of eye movement and speed was not affected by eye dominance, but subjects with left eye dominance read faster than subjects with right eye dominance.

  • This study is on the reading method of Korean old poetry in the digital age. Now days, we are living in digital media. The method of getting, organizing, and producing information is changed a lot. So for keeping pace with this change, we should reflect our teaching method. Of course, the purpose of our reflection is not to follow digital media's method and change or alter existing reading or teaching method, but it is to identify proper own reading strategy of old poetry and adjust existing method for our student who are skilled with digital media. We propose three kinds of method for student readers in school. These are 1) starting like a newspaper reader, 2) getting context (reading, making hyperlink), and 3) figuring as an architect (reading as space or scenery creator). In addition, we think about recent tendency that Korean old poetry is de-constructed and re-constructed as digital contents in digital space. We call it digitalizing of old poetry. The experiencing old poetry as a digital contents is different from reading old poetry, so we cannot alter old poetry reading experience into experience of digital contents. In conclusion, digitalizing contents should be used restrictively to fertilize reading experience of original old poetry.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate grade differences in the effect of reading methods - "oral reading" "silent reading", "intensive reading", "extensive reading" "thorough reading", "selective reading" - influences on the self-directed learning ability. The data were collected by using 12 classes of 2nd, 4th, 6th-grade, 286 children of an elementary school. The influences according to reading methods on the self-directed learning ability were surveyed through the self-directed learning ability test and through questionnaire. Out of reading methods, "intensive reading" had significant influence on the self-directed learning ability Out of reading methods of 4th and 6th-grade children, "intensive reading" had the most influence on the self-directed learning ability. However. out of reading methods of 2nd-grade children "thorough reading" had most influence on the self-directed learning ability.

National policies for promoting reading culture such as "Reading Culture Promotion Basic Plan (2014-2018)" were established and are being implemented. However, due to the absence of the system which evaluates the performance of the reading culture promotion policies and programs, it is difficult to systematically implement reading programs. In consideration of this situation, this study purposed to evaluate the reading culture promotion programs. For this purpose, it developed the evaluation tool for reading promotion programs and evaluated it. On the basis of the evaluation results, the study identified the problem of the policies and programs and provided the strategies for improving them. In addition, it proposed the direction of the reading culture promotion policies for expanding the reading culture.

To do this, the reading achievement as well as questionnaire of 4,989 Korean students' data in OECD PISA 2009 were used. It analyzed how the visit of library can affect reading achievement, reading attitude and behavioral through structural equation modeling method. The results were as follows. The library use factor is a cause-effect relationship among reading achievement, reading attitude and behavioral factors. In addition, the reading attitude is a cause-effect relationship between reading behavior factor and reading achievement. In the part of reading behavior is a cause-effect relationship reading achievement. In the results of applying this causal relationship of whole population, in some individual cases, they are activated as moderating variable.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of records for reading activities in high schools and to make a suggestion for improvement of reading activities records. Data for 120 high school students were collected and analyzed for this study. This study showed negative response results in terms of the satisfaction of the 'reading activity situation' record, the necessity of the reading activity record, and the method of recording the reading activity. It is, however, necessary to improve the current recording method to invigorate high school students' reading activities. Since it is not easy to identify students' development in reading by the titles which they provides for the reading activity records, a variety of reading activities need to be recorded for understanding students' development process and interaction activities with teachers. It is expected that the findings in this study will be significant data to improve evaluation methods of reading activities for college admission and to cultivate proper reading culture in high schools.

  • The present study has a dual purpose to investigate the current state of school English library and needs required for its effective use, and to propose a reading program at the school library. The literature on school library was reviewed. A questionnaire survey was done to find out the current situation of English library at the secondary school. The analysis of 26 secondary English teachers' responses reveals that there was the absence of librarians or reading specialists at the school English library. It was also found that the uses of the English library were limited due to the absence of the specialists, no guidelines, and no link between the curriculum and the library use. A case study on a 2-week special reading program at the school English library was conducted and 15 middle school students took part in the project. The participants took pre- and post-tests to identify their reading level using a software and did a variety of reading activities using the books selected according to their level. The comparison of the tests shows that most of the students' reading level improved after the reading program. The analysis of their views on the program and its effects reveals that they gained confidence in reading and their vocabulary understanding was improved. Some suggestions are made for the effective management of the school English library.

  • In the age of information, newly produced knowledge is mostly written in English. Therefore, there has been a strong demand for English language learning in the EFL context. However, most EFL learners possess a lack of interest and motivation in the text-based reading class. In this educational context, film is one of the most widely used materials in English reading classes considering that modern learners are predominantly familiar with various audiovisual materials. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean EFL learners experienced in the film-based reading class. Specifically, this study aims to analyze the EFL students' perceptions about the class and learning strategies that they used during the class. In order to comprehensively interpret the EFL learners' experiences in the classroom, a coding system consisting of five categories was developed: report, emotion, reflection, evaluation, future plans. The results of data analysis showed that the use of movies in English reading classes had positive effects on reading comprehension and inference of word meaning. The most frequently used learning strategies were affective strategies which helped them control their emotion, attitude, motivations and values, whereas memorization strategies were rarely used. In this respect, this study suggests that the use of movies in the EFL reading classroom encourage students' attention and help them obtain and activate schema which is useful in gaining a better understanding of text-based reading materials.
