A study on pricing for information services (정보서어비스의 가격설정)

  • Information and information services are recently recognized as a commodity and libraries and information centers are also considered as a company. Under this circumstance, libraries and information centers encounter the problems how they can effectively achieve the objectives of service institutions and objectives of resource management as companies. Pricing policy for information services must be something to satisfy these two very different objectives. This paper discusses the following issues to develop pricing model for information services, 1) the needs of pricing for information services, 2) the major elements impacting to pricing of information services including the objectives of pricing, cost and demand of information services, and information value, 3) the pros and cons of pricing method using concepts of average cost, price differentiation, and marginal cost, respectively.

  • Modern engineering design problems involve complexity of disciplinary coupling and difficulty of problem formulation. Multidisciplinary design optimization can overcome the complexity and design optimization software or frameworks can lessen the difficulty. Recently, a growing number of new multidisciplinary design optimization techniques have been proposed. However, each technique has its own pros and cons and it is hard to predict a priori which technique is more efficient than others for a specific problem. In this study, a software system has been developed to directly solve MDO problems with minimal input required. Since the system is based on MATLAB, it can exploit the optimization toolbox which is already developed and proven to be effective and robust. The framework is devised to change an MDO technique to another as the optimization goes on and it is called a reconfigurable MDO framework. Several numerical examples are shown to prove the validity of the reconfiguration idea and its effectiveness.

An Appreciation and a Prospect on the Rotterdam Rules (로테르담 규칙에 대한 평가와 전망)

  • The Rotterdam Rules, which was adopted in December 2008 by UNCITRAL, has underlying intention that it will provide uniform law for the international carriage of goods by sea and modernize transport law reflecting modern transport custom. However, it is also true that there are various conflicting views on the Rotterdam Rules. This article tried to analyze main controversial issues such as scope of application, basis of liability of the shipper and the carrier, exception th the volume contract, legal position of the freight forwarder, delivery of the goods from the both sides of view. The Rotterdam Rules exposes some problems in applying and interpreting the Rules as many people indicated. These problems, I think, mainly due to the extended scope of application and broader range of issues. However, I do not think that the Rotterdam Rules will serious affect to the international transport industry. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to expect perfect Rules satisfying every interests.

Tuning the Architecture of Support Vector Machine: The Case of Bankruptcy Prediction

  • Tuning the architecture of SVM (support vector machine) is to build an SVM model of better performance. Two different tuning methods of the grid search and the GA (genetic algorithm) have been addressed in the literature, each of which has its own methodological pros and cons. This paper suggests a combined method for tuning the architecture of SVM models, which employs the GAM (generalized additive models), the grid search, and the GA in sequence. The GAM is used for selecting input variables, and the grid search and the GA are employed for finding optimal parameter values of the SVM models. Applying the method to a bankruptcy prediction problem, we show that SVM model tuned by the proposed method outperforms other SVM models.

  • Modeling is essential to simulate the operation of integrated circuit (IC) before its fabrication. Seeing a large number of Metal-Oxide-Silicon Field-Effect-Transistor (MOSFET) models available, it has become important to understand them and compare them for their pros and cons. The task becomes equally difficult when the complexity of these models becomes very high. The paper reviews the mainstream models with their physical relevance and their comparisons. Major short-channel and quantum effects in the models are outlined. Emphasis is set upon the latest compact models like BSIM, MOS Models 9/11, EKV, SP etc.

Bridging the gap between CAD and CAE using STL files

  • In many areas of industry, it is desirable to have fast and reliable systems in order to quickly obtain suitable solid models for computer- aided analyses. Nevertheless it is well known that the data exchange process between CAD modelers and CAE packages can require significative efforts. This paper presents an approach for geometrical data exchange through triangulated boundary models. The proposed framework is founded on the use of STL file specification as neutral format file. This work is principally focused on data exchange among CAD modelers and FEA packages via STL. The proposed approach involves the definition of a topological structure suitable for the STL representation and the development of algorithms for topology and geometry data processing in order to get a solid model suitable for finite element analysis or other computer aided engineering purposes. Different algorithms for model processing are considered and their pros and cons are discussed. As a case study, a prototype modeler which supports an exporting filter for a commercial CAE package has been implemented.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the trend and performances of contracting out the management of public libraries in Korea, in order to help promote the effectiveness and efficiencies of their operations. In this research, Investigated in detail are the following issues: First, the need for and background of contracting out public library services and their present state in Korea; Second, the pros and cons of contracting out public library services; and finally, based on the aforementioned findings, a future model of 'contracting out' public library services is proposed in order to further the effective management of public libraries in Korea.

  • The User Interface (UI) in the company is more important than ever. But the application of UI for the industry use is restricted by various constraints such as delivery, technical limitation, etc. User Interface designers in the company have thought how to set up the UI organization, how to define identity and goal, how to communicate with other teams, what is the best UI process, and many other issues. In this paper, the author discuss the practical issues arisen when User Interface organization is formed and managed based on the mobile phone manufacture's perspective. The pros and cons of location of UI organization, advanced UI organization, UI member formation, UI role, UI output, UI evaluation, and understanding of UI in the society and company are discussed. This discussion will help UI designers in industry to set up and manage UI organization.

  • Terrestrial Laser Scanner and Airborne Laser Scanning is one of the state of art surveying equipments. So This study deals with the combined use of mobile TLS(Terrestrial Laser Scanner) with ALS(Airborne Laser Scanning) to extract shoreline's topography information. These two systems have their own pros and cons. Mobile TLS can capture the facades of a low story building along the shoreline fast and quickly. Meanwhile, Due to viewpoint restrictions of ALS data collection, the amount of detail, which is available for the building facades is very limited. Therefore, it is recommended that the co-registration and geo-referencing methods of both two should be developed and the application of both system for shoreline mapping also should be investigated.

A Comparison of Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Single and Tandem Strut SWATH Ships (하나 또는 두개의 지주를 갖는 소수선면 쌍동선의 유체동역학적 특성 비교)

  • This report is to provide a comparison of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a single strut SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) model and a tandem(twin) strut SWATH model. The hydrodynamic characteristics included are the resistance in calm water, 6 degree freedom of motion responses in stationary and with forward speeds, and wave loadings etc. All these quantities are measured in the towing tank and compared with the computational results. Based on the present study, the pros and cons for single and tandem strut SWATH designs are clarified and some design suggestions are made.
