A new algorithm is suggested to solve the optimal reactive power and voltage control (optimal VAR control) problem. The model minimizes the real power losses in the system. The constraints include the reactive power limits of the generators, limits on the bus voltages and the operating limits of control variables-the transformer tap positions generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The method presented herein, using a newly developed Jacobian decomposition method, employs linearized sensitivity relationships of power systems to establish both the objective function for minimizing the system losses and the system performance sensitivities relating dependent and control variables. The algorithm consists of two modules, i.e. the Q-V module for reactive power-voltage control, and load flow module for computational error adjustments. In particular the acceleration factor technique is introduced to enhance the convergence property in Q-V module. The combined use of the afore-mentioned two modules ensures more effective and efficient solutions for optimal reactive power dispatch problems. Results of the application of the method to a sample system and other worst-case systems demonstrated that the algorithm suggested herein is compared favourably with conventional ones in terms of computation accuracy and convergence characteristics.
Tidal power generation is to produce electrical energy from fluctuations of the ebb and flow in a constructed embankment. More specifically, the sinusoidal variations of tidal flow, along with the periodicity and changes in the height of waves over time make the tidal power generation possible at a certain tidal level. This paper proposes a more practical efficiency test method for tidal power plant generator that utilizes the axis torque changing values rather than the retardation method which is commonly used. The proposed method was compared with the conventional method and the test result shows that proposed method provides a similar accuracy with the conventional retardation method and a better efficiency.
Voltage sags are one of the most frequently occurring power quality problems challenging power systems today. The Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is one of the major custom power solutions that are capable of mitigating the effect of supply voltage sags at the load or Point of Common Coupling (PCC). A UPQC-Q employs a control method in which the series compensator injects a voltage that leads the supply current by $90^{\circ}C$ so that the series compensator at steady state consumes no active power. However, the UPQC-Q has the disadvantage that its series compensator needs to be overrated. Thus it cannot offer effective compensation. This paper proposes a new control scheme for the UPQC-Q that offers minimum power injection. The proposed minimum power injection method takes into consideration the limits on the rated voltage capacity of the series compensator and its control scheme. The validity of the proposed control scheme is investigated through simulation and experimental results.

Up to the present, there have been many works to analyze interconnects on timing aspects, while less works have been done on power aspects. As resistance of interconnects and rise time of signals increase, power consumption associated with interconnects is ever-increasing. In case of clock trees, particularly power consumption associated with interconnects is over 30% of total power consumption. Hence, an efficient method to compute power consumption of interconnects is necessary and in this paper we propose a simple yet accurate method to estimate dynamic power consumption of interconnects. We propose a new reduced-order model to estimate power consumption of large interconnects. Through the proposed model which is directly derived from total capacitance and resistance of interconnects, we show that the dynamic power consumption of whole interconnects can be approximated, and propose an analytical method to compute the power consumption. The results applying the proposed method to various RC networks show that average relative error is 1.86% and maximum relative error is 9.82% in comparison with HSPICE results.

Conventional PDP power system, which commonly uses two isolation transformer, consists of sustaining power ($V_S$), addressing power($V_A$), and Multi power($V_M$). Because each of these power conversion circuits use transformer and control IC, there are several defects: decrease of efficiency, rise of cost, and parts stress. This paper is proposed the method which operates PDP power system only with one transformer. The proposed method contributes not only to high-efficient performance of the DC/DC power stage and improvement of reliability but also to reduction of cost by reducing volume and size. Also, proposed method is proper to Address Display-period Separation(ADS) which is one of the driving methods of PDP. Superiority of the proposed method is proved by comparison with conventional method and theoretical, experimental analysis.

Tunnel Boring Machine's Technology has depends mostly on imports, currently domestic technology development was proceeding. There are many technologies in this field, above all, the large-capacity motor drive technology required for excavation is one of the core technologies. In particular, when several large motors are simultaneously starting, there are many problems due to a large starting current at that time, and it is difficult to design and operate a power receiving facility. In this paper, A method of reducing the starting current by using the regenerative power generated by the deceleration of the motor has been studied. To verify this proposal, we designed the induction motor controller using CAE based power simulation tool and verified the results of the proposed method by applying the reduced model. As a result, it is possible to reduce the maximum starting current and shorten the start-up time. Moreover, even if several motors are connected to one bank, it is proved that the method can be efficiently operated by using the sequential braking / starting sequence. In the case of a power system in which a large capacity electric motor such as a tunnel excavation system is driven, the results of this study are expected to be a stable and effective method for solving the start-up current problem and designing the power receiving facility.
We present in this paper a novel mid and long term power load prediction method using temporal pattern mining from AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) data. Since the power load patterns have time-varying characteristic and very different patterns according to the hour, time, day and week and so on, it gives rise to the uninformative results if only traditional data mining is used. Also, research on data mining for analyzing electric load patterns focused on cluster analysis and classification methods. However despite the usefulness of rules that include temporal dimension and the fact that the AMR data has temporal attribute, the above methods were limited in static pattern extraction and did not consider temporal attributes. Therefore, we propose a new classification method for predicting power load patterns. The main tasks include clustering method and temporal classification method. Cluster analysis is used to create load pattern classes and the representative load profiles for each class. Next, the classification method uses representative load profiles to build a classifier able to assign different load patterns to the existing classes. The proposed classification method is the Calendar-based temporal mining and it discovers electric load patterns in multiple time granularities. Lastly, we show that the proposed method used AMR data and discovered more interest patterns.

In the competitive electricity market, various pricing methods are developed and practiced in many countries. Among these pricing methods, marginal loss factor(MLF) can be applied to reflect the marginal cost of network losses. For the calculation of MLF, power flow method has been used to calculate system loss deviation. However, this power flow method shows some shortcomings such as necessity of regional reference node, and absence of an ability to consider network constraints like line congestion, voltage limit, and generation output limit. The former defect might affects adversely to the equity of market participants and the latter might generate an inappropriate price signals to customers and generators. To overcome these defects, the utilization of optimal power flow(OPF) is suggested to get the system loss deviation in this paper. 30-bus system is used for the case study to compare the MLF results by the power flow and the OPF method for 24-hour dispatching and pricing, Generator payment and customer charge are compared with these two methods also. The results show that MLF by OPF reflects the power system condition more faithfully than that of by the conventional power flow method
The paper deals with the control of the synchronous reluctance machine without position senser. A method for the computation of the transformation angle out of terminal voltages and currents is presented. The injection of test signals allows operation at zero speed. Fundamental for this control scheme is the angle estimation method over the whole operating range including field-weakening is discussed in detail. The implementation of the angle estimation method in a rotor-oriented control scheme and practical results are demonstrated.

We propose a algorithm to calculate power factor of fundamental waveform in an environment where the voltage and current have been distorted by harmonics. In the proposed power factor computation algorithm, voltage and current are converted to rotating DQ reference frame, and power factor is calculated from active power and reactive power. We compare the proposed method with the conventional power factor measurement method as mathematically. In a condition that voltage and current are distorted by harmonics, the proposed method accurately measure the power factor of fundamental wave, and it is confirmed by simulation using MATLAB. If the proposed power factor measurement method is applied to an automatic power factor control system, a power factor compensation performance can be maximized in harmonic distortion environment. As a result, it is possible to reduce electricity prices, reduce line loss, increase load capacity, ensure the transmission margin capacity, and reduce the amount of power generation.
