  • This paper presents an advanced control technique for power density maximization of the Brushless DC (BLDC) generator by using the linear tracking method. In a generator of given rating, the weight and size of the system affect the fuel consumption directly. Therefore, power density is one of the most important issues in a stand-alone generator. BLDC generator has high power density in the machine point of view and additional increases of power density by control means can be expected. Conventional rectification methods cannot achieve the maximum power possible because of hon-optimal current waveforms. The optimal current waveform to maximize power density and minimize machine size and weight in a nonsinusoidal power supply system has been derived, incorporated in a control system, and verified by simulation and experimental work. A new simple algebraic method has been proposed to accomplish the proposed control without an FFT which is time consuming and complicated.

  • The paper develops a method of minimizing power transmission losses by optimum control of reactive power flow. In the past, because the optimizing method considers as the first step the minimization of node voltage deviations and as the second step the minimization of transmission losses within the system, the calculating procedure was more complex and difficult to handle. In this paper, a new computing method for real time control on a digital computer is described which aims at a coordinated use of reactive power sources and voltage regulating devices. The power transmission losses are minimized by a gradient method while satisfying the constrained system voltage conditions and sensitivity parameters are the basis of the method.

Determining Optimal Custom Power Devices to Enhance Power Quality

  • This paper proposes a novel method for determining the kind and rating of power quality solutions. To determine the kind of solution, event cause and direction are utilized. According to the event cause and direction, an adequate type of solution is determined for effective compensation. To rate the required capacity of solution, the concept of lost energy is adopted. Lost voltage, lost power and lost energy are calculated and the rating of the solution is determined to compensate a specific event. The rating method that utilizes the result of stochastic diagnosis is also proposed. A power quality index such as CP95 is adopted for solution suggestion. The method developed in this paper is applied to the test system and proved to be useful for enhancing the power quality of the customer system. It can provide customers with information pertaining to what is a proper and cost-effective solution among various compensating devices.

A Maximum Power Point Tracking Control for Photovoltaic Array without Voltage Sensor

  • This paper presents a maximum power point tracking algorithm for Photovoltaic array using only instantaneous output current information. The conventional Hill climbing method of peak power tracking has a disadvantage of oscillations about the maximum power point. To overcome this problem, we have developed an algorithm that will estimate the duty ratio corresponding to maximum power operation of solar cell. The estimation of the optimal duty ratio involves, finding the duty ratio at which integral value of output current is maximum. For the estimation, we have used the well know Lagrange's interpolation method. This method can track maximum power point quickly even for changing solar isolation and avoids oscillations after reaching the maximum power point.

Uncertainty Modeling and Robust Control for LCL Resonant Inductive Power Transfer System

  • The LCL resonant inductive power transfer (IPT) system is increasingly used because of its harmonic filtering capabilities, high efficiency at light load, and unity power factor feature. However, the modeling and controller design of this system become extremely difficult because of parameter uncertainty, high-order property, and switching nonlinear property. This paper proposes a frequency and load uncertainty modeling method for the LCL resonant IPT system. By using the linear fractional transformation method, we detach the uncertain part from the system model. A robust control structure with weighting functions is introduced, and a control method using structured singular values is used to enhance the system performance of perturbation rejection and reference tracking. Analysis of the controller performance is provided. The simulation and experimental results verify the robust control method and analysis results. The control method not only guarantees system stability but also improves performance under perturbation.

  • In this paper, a new control strategy of a series active power filter using direct compensating voltage extraction method is proposed. This control algorithm compensates harmonics, reactive power and neutral line currents which are generated by balanced or unbalanced nonlinear loads. The advantage of this method is that the compensating voltage of the series active power filter can be extracted without phase transformation. Therefore, calculation time is shorten and the control method is simple compared with conventional method as the p-q theory In addition, this control strategy was applied for the series active power filter in 3-phase 4-wire system which is widely employed in distributing electric energy to several office building and manufacturing plants. Some results obtained from the experimental model using the proposed method are presented to demonstrate and confirm its validity.

  • In a conventional system, hydraulic unit pumps out pressurized oil when the power use is not even necessary. As a result, it causes much power loss. This study is on the proposal of new hydraulic unit which controls the revolution of the pump in order to produce proper power needed and to have good response characteristic. In addition, the existing control methods such as PID control method, fuzzy control method, and adaptive control method are applied to the proposed hydraulic unit. Then the best control method is selected and the controller is developed to realize minimum power loss.

  • Owing to the rapid development of economy and the higher living standard of people, electricity demands have growth and the peak load has been increased rapidly. To cope with this impacts and to reduce the cost of service,utilities are conserned about power load management program. This paper shows a scheme of power load control and the basic structure of direct load control system. And also radio control method using the public pager which is one of the best economical and serviceable method in techniques will be introduced briefly.

  • This paper proposes a novel sensorless maximum power point tracking (11PPT) algorithm for PV systems. The method is based on dividing the operating time into several intervals in which the PV terminals are short circuited in one interval and the calculated short-current of the PV is obtained and used to determine the optimum operating point where the maximum output power can be obtained. The proposed MPPT algorithm has been introduced into a current-controlled boost converter whose duty ratio is controlled to the maintain MPP condition. The same sequence is then repeated regularly capturing the PV maximum power. The main advantage of this method is eliminating the current sensor. Meanwhile, this MPPT algorithm reduces the power oscillations around the peak power point which occurs with perturbation and observation algorithms. In addition, the total cost will decrease by removing the current sensor from the PV side. Finally, simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • The past several years have strongly anticipated the advent of a more integrated system control combining active power and voltage-reactive power controls. This paper presents a new approach to the intergrated system control with primary emphasis on the development of a new control method which combines the conventional economical load dispatching(ELD) and voltage-reactive power controls. The control method, in its fundamental principle, first determines the optimal active power allocation in accordance with the conventional ELD controller. By a proper manipulation of the remaining reactive power sources in the system, the control method then reduces the transmission losses of the system by the adjustment of system voltage distribution and also by the proper allotment of reactive power flows.
