  • The purpose of this study is to determine the correlations between problematic behaviors and activities of daily living(ADL) targeting 106 demented elderly people hospitalized in a geriatric hospital. To examine the cognitive function of the subjects, the study used Korean Mini Mental State Examination(K-MMSE). For problematic behaviors and ADL, the study collected data based on Patient Assessment Forms in the geriatric hospital. Among problematic behaviors, apathy/indifference had the highest correlation with the items of ADL. Irritability/lability, agitation/aggression, depression/ dysphoria, night-time behavior and wandering also showed to be correlated to items of ADL(p<.05). This study demonstrated that cognitive function, problematic behaviors and ADL of the demented elderly hospitalized in the geriatric hospital are correlated to each other.

  • The well-known sentence, "You can't manage what you don't measure" suggests the importance of measurement. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) in Korea is measuring the effort of informatization for various dimensions such as validity, adequacy, and effectiveness using the MND evaluation system to obtain positive and significant effects from informatization. MND views the defense informatization domain as divided into the defense informatization policy, the defense informatization project, and the defense informatization level, which can measure the informatization capability of the MND and the armed forces or organizations. Furthermore, it feels there is some limitation, such as those related to ambiguity and reliability, present in the system. To overcome the limitations in the existing system to evaluate the defense informatization policy, this study proposes a revised evaluation framework for the policy of defense informatization, its indicators, and measurement methods.

  • Osteosarcoma is mainly developing around the knee joint. But osteosarcoma of the calcaneus is rare. A 20 year old male patient visited our clinic due to persistent pain around the calcaneus. We diagnosed it to osteosarcoma of the calcaneus and treated with below knee amputation and adjuvant chemotherapy. We experienced a case of osteosarcoma of the calcaneus and would like to report it with review of literatures.

  • Economists have become interested in the centralization and decentralization of planning, in the linking up of models into a homogenous model system, and in multi-level planning. In this study, Input/Output techniques used for explaining the resource allocation mechanisms to be more rational through detailed specifications of a large organization's objectives and explicit linking of centralization and decentralization to such objectives. Also the application of mathematical methods to the higher levels of planning in the optimal allocation resources can't fully describe the actual practice of planning. On the other hand, 1-0 techniques are standard in economic analysis and planning. However, the application procedures to the armed forces hold only when their assumptions are met and when their solutions are convergent. So, it is of limited applicability.

  • RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) is one of key technologies in ubiquitous computing. RFID system comprises tag, reader, and computer application. The tag is a small electronic chip, which is attached to a thing such as item, pallet, container. The reader has an tiny antenna obtaining the identification information of the things by radio frequency, and provides the information to the computer application for a business. In this paper we have proposed the military application of RFID and its implementation policy for the Korean armed forces. We believe that The principle application area would be logistics TAV(total asset visibility) and resource management, and the implementation should be achieved step by step considering the advancement of RFID technology and government policy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a transitional care program for patients discharged from military hospitals. The study consists of two phases: developing the program and evaluating its effectiveness. Methods: The conceptual framework used to guide the development of the program was Meleis's transition theory. A quasiexperimental design was employed for this study. Participants were recruited from patients discharged from one military hospital, 72 in the control group and 56 in the experiment group. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 12.0 program with chi-square, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and mixed model. Results: Participants in the transitional care program reported promoting a positive personal condition, and more healthy patterns of response in the first week after being discharged and a smoother discharge transition. Conclusion: The transitional care program developed for discharge patients from military hospital promoted discharge readiness and promoted smooth discharge transition.

  • Due to the rapid developments in information and computer technology, the warfare paradigm is being transformed into information-centric and knowledge-based warfare. This atmosphere may have significant impact on the ROK armed forces' Force Improvement Plans (FIP) which is documented in 'Defense White Paper 2004'. We focus here on the relationship of information-centric force and deterrence of invasion. Particularly, we are interested in understanding the level of information superiority that might be required to deter the invasion. In order to solve this problem, we employed two-sided, zero-sum strategic game to simulate the outcome with six hypothetical cases devised by varying the level of information superiority.

  • This study expands limitation of OASIS(Optimal Allocation of Spares for Initial Supports) program, which calculates CSP(Concurrent Spare Part), not only availability but also cost, and developed the program enabling run in WINDOW OS. By considering multi-step repair and logistics support system, repairing capability at the time of deployment, and procurement period, this model is the first local model reflecting circumstances of the armed forces of the Republic of Korea. Furthermore, the programmed model was selected as the military standard software and has being essentially used for CSP calculation.

  • This paper proposes a change process model for organization development in health care organizations and provide an OD case exemplar of nursing service unit at Virtual Hospital. This case exemplar was written in a narrative form rather than in an argumentative form as an embodiment of organization development process as is viewed from the cultural/interpretive perspective rather than from the technical/rational one. This case exemplar illustrates the change process which consists of four interrelated components: change intervention, organizational target variables, individual organizational member, and organizational outcomes. It also demonstrates the applicability of the narrative rationality which involves narrative probability and narrative fidelity to the story where the learning organization, shared governance, and empowerment are fully emplotted and enlivened. The implications for organization development in health care organizations are discussed.

  • Rickettsial infections (Rickettsioses) are the causes of acute fever found in Thailand. It is classified as acute febrile illnesses transmitted by bloodsucking arthropod vectors (tick, flea, and chigger). This research investigated pathogens of scrub typhus in vectors from Bangkaew District, Phatthalung Province. A total of 303 pools of vector samples were ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, R. microplus, and Haemaphysalis sp.), fleas (Ctenocephalides felis orientis, C. f. felis, and C. canis), and chiggers (Leptotrombidium deliense, Aschoschoengastia indica, Blankaartia acuscutellaris and Walchia disparunguis pingue) collected from reservoir hosts (dogs and rodents). The 17 and 56 kDa gene of Rickettsia causing scrub typhus were found in 29% of ticks and 98% of flea. DNA sequence analysis reveeled the detected strains were R. asembonensis and Rickettsia sp. cf1 and 5.The chiggers, 1%, were infected with Rickettsia strain TA763, a pathogen of scrub typhus.
