Spectroscopic measurement method based on visible and near-infrared wavelengths was prominent technology for rapid and non-destructive evaluation of internal quality of fruits. Reflectance measurement was performed to evaluate firmness, soluble solid content, and acid content of truss tomatoes by hyperspectral reflectance imaging system. The Vis/NIR reflectance spectra was acquired from truss tomatoes sorted by 6 ripening stages. The multivariable analysis based on partial least square (PLS) was used to develop regression models with several preporcessing methods, such as smoothing, normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), and standard normal variate (SNV). The best model was selected in terms of coefficient of determination of calibration ($R_c^2$) and full cross validation ($R_{cv}^2$), and root mean standard error of calibration (RMSEC) and full cross validation (RMSECV). The results of selected models were 0.8976 ($R_p^2$), 6.0207 kgf (RMSEP) with gaussian filter of smoothing, 0.8379 ($R_p^2$), $0.2674^{\circ}Bx$ (RMSEP) with the mean of normalization, and 0.7779 ($R_p^2$), 0.1033% (RMSEP) with median filter of smoothing for firmness, soluble solid content (SSC), and acid content, respectively. Results show that Vis / NIR hyperspectral reflectance imaging technique has good potential for the measurement of internal quality of truss tomato.
In the present experiment, fly ash application to soil generally improved soil pH condition. The improvement of soil pH was greater with bituminous fly ash than with anthracite fly ash. Treatment of fly ash also made available phosphate content increased. But phosphate content in cultivated tomato plants was in inverse proportion to content in soil due to high pH of experimental soil as well as hot and dry weather. Amount of phosphate in plants had a strong positive effect on the yield of tomato. Number and weight of harvested fruits was greatest from July 21 to July 30, the time considered as peak harvesting period of second fruit truss. In conclusion, the application of fly ash improved physico-chemical properties of experimental soil.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of treatments and adequate concentration of ethephon on coloring promotion of peel of sweet persimmon 'Nishimurawase' cultivar. High concentration(30 and 40㎎/l) of ethephon treatments increased the coloring of peel. but they were unfavorable to marketability due to the decrease of firmness, the increase of softening ratio, and the short of marketing critical period of fruits. Low concentration(20㎎/l) of ethephon treatment maintained higher marketability in terms of coloring of peel, firmness, softening ratio, and marketing critical period of fruit.

Anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids, are natural water-soluble pigments, which are mainly found in vegetables and fruits. Anthocyanins have attractive pharmacological activities, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of anthocyanins-rich fraction (ANF) from Korean purple sweet potato variety, "Shinjami", against hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$)-induced oxidative stress. In our results, pre-treatment of HepG2 cells with ANF ($10{\mu}g/mL$) significantly prevented cell death and maintained cell integrity, following exposure to 0.9 mM hydrogen peroxide. The $H_2O_2$-dependent production of intracellular ROS was also significantly decreased by pre-treatment with ANF (6 h, $10{\mu}g/mL$). In addition, ANF increased the mRNA levels of antioxidant enzymes, catalase and glutathione level in $H_2O_2$-treated HepG2 cells. These results indicated that ANF protected HepG2 cells against $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress by inducing protective system.
The naringin hydrolyzing enzyme has been purified from the culture filtrate of the mold Aspergillus S-1 which selected to remove the bitter test of the orange or citrus fruits industrily. In a view of purity naringinase was more effectively purified in order of molecular sieving on Sephadeex G-200, starach gel electrophoresis, chromatography or a DEAE-Cellulose column and fractional precipitation by ammonium sulfate. The purified enzyme is homogeneous in paper electrophoresis from a culture filtrate by treatment fractional precipitation with ammonium sulfate, DEAE-Cellulose treatment and Sephadex-200 column chromatography and it hydrolyse only naringin to purunin.
Radiation were seriously damaged on liver functions. Blueberry was fruits that contains Vit A, Vit c, Vit E, follic acid, ${\beta}$-carotene, and anthocyanin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protection effects of blueberry the liver functions. Irradiation dose was used to 4 Gy (Linac 6 Mev) X-ray Treatment device Experiment animals was used to 7 rats in each groups. It was investigated liver functions that contains TP, ALB, GLOB, ALT, ALKP and CHOL. We showed that Blueberry was not recovery effects on radiation-induced liver functions. But, Statistically significant value was showed ALB (p>0.01) and ALT (p>0.1). It was concluded that blueberry was not used to recovery materials on radiation-induced liver functions.
Dried fruits of Schizandra chinensis Baillon, Fructus Schisandrae, have been widely used for many years to prevent and treat various diseases in Asian countries including Korea and Russia. It has recently been reported that extracts of Fructus Schisandrae are effective for controlling muscle and skeletal diseases. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of ethanol extract of Fructus Schisandrae (EEFS) on apoptosis and inflammatory response in gastrocnemius muscle of dexamethasone-induced catabolic muscle atrophy mice as part of natural substance discovery and functional analysis for improving muscle function. According to the results of this study, EEFS supplementation attenuated body weight gains and suppressed calf thickness loss in dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophic mice. Gastrocnemius muscle immunohistochemistry showed that expression of caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, which are representative apoptotic markers, was markedly increased in dexamethasone control mice; however, their expression was effectively reduced in the EEFS-fed mice. EEFS supplementation also prevented dexamethasone-induced increases in immunoreactivity of muscle fibers for myostatin, an important negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass. In addition, EEFS significantly normalized the increased numbers of nitrotyrosine, 4-hydroxynonenal and inducible nitric oxide synthase-positive muscle fibers compared to that found in dexamethasone control mice. These results suggest that EEFS protects dexamethasone-induced muscular atrophy by decreasing apoptosis and inflammatory responses, and EEFS is more likely to be developed as a muscle strengthening agent.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between antioxidant food intake pattern and asthma control status in Korean adolescents. This study was conducted using data from 1,578 patients diagnosed with asthma among the participants in the 11th online health behavior survey. Statistical analyses were performed for sociodemographic variables, known risk factors for asthma worsening, and all variables which were related to food intake pattern. For final decision, logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between antioxidant food intake and asthma worsening. Male gender and smoking experiences were associated with asthma exacerbation. Low intake of antioxidant foods status also significantly increased asthma exacerbations. Antioxidant food intake and smoking prevention education is important for adolescent asthma patients. It is highly needed to recommend taking fruits and vegetables properly.
Blue mold is the most important postharvest disease of apples in Korea. Apple fruits with blue mold symptoms were collected from storages in different locations in Korea and were investigated for their association with Penicillium species. A total of sixty five isolates of Penicillium were sampled from the collected apples. Based on DNA sequence analysis of ${\beta}$-tublin gene and ITS and lsu rDNA (ID region) and morphological characteristics, they were identified as P. crustosum, P. expansum, P. italicum, P. solitum and P. sp.. P. sp. which is closely related to P. hirsutum is a new species, not reported before. P. expansum (35%) was predominant species followed by P. crustosum. The phylogenetic tree inferred from combined ${\beta}$-tublin and ID region sequence showed good correlation with species that are defined by morphological characteristics. In pathogenicity test, apples were wound-inoculated with conidial suspension and incubated at $20-22^{\circ}C$. The most severe and destructive species was P. expansum. The species caused a decayed area 42-50mm in diameter after 8-10days. Decayed area caused by P. crustosum and P. sp. was 26-32mm and 20-26mm, respectively. This is the first record of P. crustosum, P. italicum and P. sp. from apple in Korea.
Waste nutrient solution(WNS) using non-recycled hydroponics for melon increased contents of $NO_3$-N and cataions, such as, Ca, K, while anions except $NO_3$-N were decreased slightly as the musk melon plants grew. pH and EC of WNS were maintained 5.7$\sim$7.0, 2.0$\sim$2.2 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. The musk melon plants cultivated by fertigation using WNS showed longer plant height and root length, and higher chlorophyll content than that grown by hydroponics. The fruit weight of musk melon grown by fertigation using WNS were 417.1 g heavier than that cultivated by hydroponics and soluble solids contents of musk melon fruit cultivated by fertigation using WNS was $13.3^{\circ}Brix$, that was $1.4^{\circ}Brix$ higher than that grown by hydroponics. While the growth of cucumber plants and size of cucumber fruits were not different between in fertigation using WNS and hydroponics, total yields and marketable fruit percentage showed more in fertigation using WNS than in hydroponics.
