  • Peucedanum terebinthaceum Fischer (Umbelliferae) known as "Gi Reum Na Mool" in Korea and used for the treatment of cough, phlegm, headache and common cold etc. The substances were isolated from the fruits of Peucedanum terebinthaceum and identified by UV, GLC, IR, NMR, Mass spectra and physico-chemical tests. The steroidal compounds from the fruits were identified as $\beta$-sitosterol (tR 33.01 min.) and stigmasterol (tR 28.87 min.) by GLC. Substance I (colorless prismatic crystal, $C_{19}H_{20}O_5$, mp $110~111^{\circ}$) was identified as decursin which is one of the pyranocoumarin. Hydrolysis of substance I with 5%-potassium hydroxide produced decursinol. Acetylation of decursinot gave its monoacetate, white needles, $C_{16}H_{16}O_5$. Substance II(light yellowish white needle crystal, $C_9H_6O_3$, mp $227~228^{\circ}$) was proved to be umbelliferone. Substance I, decursin, was isolated for the first time from the fruits of Peucedanum spp. (Umbelliferae).

  • As consumption of high-quality fruits increases and sales and packaging units become smaller, the demand for automatic fruit grading systems is increasing. Compared to other crops, the quality of fruit is determined by visual characteristics such as shape, color, and scratches, rather than just physical size and weight. Accordingly, this study presents a CNN model that can effectively extract and classify the visual features of fruits and a perceptron that classifies fruits using physical features, and proposes a stacking ensemble model that can effectively combine the classification results of these two neural networks. The experiments with AI Hub public data show that the stacking ensemble model is effective for grading fruits. However, the ensemble model does not always improve the performance of classifying all the fruit grading. So, it is necessary to adapt the model according to the kind of fruit.

  • Anthracnose symptoms often occurred on fruits of Asian pear trees grown in Anseong, Naju, Seonghwan and Pyeongtaek in Korea during the harvesting period from 2000 to 2005. A total of 28 isolates of Colletotrichum sp. were obtained from the anthracnose symptoms. All the isolates were identified as Colletotrichum acutatum based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Four isolates of the fungus were tested for pathogenicity to fruits of Asian pear tree by artificial inoculation. All the isolates induced anthracnose symptoms on the fruits by wound inoculation but not by unwound inoculation. The anthracnose symptoms induced by artificial inoculation were similar to those observed in the orchard. This is the first report of anthracnose of Asian pear tree caused by Colletotrichum acutatum.

  • Previous studies have suggested that Citrus fruits might suppress the proliferation of various cancer cells. However, little is known about any specific ingredients in the extract of Citrus fruits to exert its anti-proliferative activity in cancer cells. The present study aimed to identify the active ingredients in Citrus fruits to suppress the proliferation of rat hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Among tested compounds, two polymethoxylated flavones (nobiletin and tangeritin) showed significant anti-proliferative activity whereas other compounds (synephrine, rutin, hesperidin) did not. Interestingly, nobiletin as well as tangeritin also decreased the protein amount of gluconeogenic enzymes, PEPCK and G6Pase. The possible involvement of gluconeogenic activity in the proliferation of hepatocellulacarcinoma cells are further to be investigated.

  • A 4.1MHz$1^H$ Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR) sensor was designed and manufactured to evaluate the internal quality of fruits. The magnet console having 963gauss magnetic field induction was used for the NMR sensor. To optimize and evaluate the NMR sensor, glycerol and sugar-water solutions were used. $^1$H(proton) resonance signals were used to estimate the sugar contents in fruits. Artificial neural network models were developed to predict sugar contents in fruits from the proton resonance signals. The standard errors of prediction(SEP) were 0.565(apple), 0.394(pear) and 0.415(kiwi), respectively. The result implied that it was possible to evaluate apple, pear and kiwi into 3 grades using the NMR sensor.

  • Harvested de-astringent persimmon 'Fuyu' were treated with various lighting sources under low (3℃) and high (22℃) temperatures. The weight loss rate of fruits was lower in those with Red LED than Fluorescence and Blue LED under both temperature conditions. Hardness and soluble solid content of fruits were higher in those with 3℃ / Blue LED or mixed LED (Blue+Red LEDs). Beta-carotene and lycopene content of fruit peel were higher in those with 3℃ than 22℃ and with Red LED or light sources with mixed red wavelength under both temperatures. When the fruits treated with light and temperature were stored for 4 days under 3℃ / dark condition, the hardness of the fruits did not significant difference among the treatments. Taken together all the results, it would be best to treat it light sources mixed red wavelength under 3℃.

  • In order to prepare allowable guidelines for weight loss for packed agricultural produces during distribution after harvest, resipration and transpiration rates were investigated for fruits such as peach, apple, pear, persimon and mandarin which produced in Korea. Respiration and transpiration rates were widely different from cultivar and harvesting season among same produces. Respiration rates were increased as an environmental temperature was increased. Moisture amount that produced by respiration in five fruits was 3.55∼107.67mg/kg/h and those moisture amounts were considered as no much influence for the strength of cartons for packing of fruits. Moisture amount produced from transpiration was 24 ∼ 1,195g for 15kg packing unit of fruits in 5 days. after harvest.

  • Sclerotinia twig blight on trees and cottony rot on fruits of Satsuma mandarin were observed in Cheju, Korea in 1996 and 1997. The causal fungus causing citrus twig blight and cottony rot was identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum which had cup-shaped apothecia bearing hyaline and clavate asci and periphyses on sclerotium. Symptoms were produced on twigs, developing young leaves, fully developed new leaves, and fruits 2-9 days after wound inoculation, but only on twigs with young lateral buds and developing young leaves by unwound inoculation. The fungus grew well between 10 and $27^{\circ}$, but optimum temperature was $24^{\circ}$ on potato dextrose agar. Most varieties were highly susceptible to S. sclerotiorum, whereas some varieties such as Ichinan were relatively resistant among twelve Satsuma mandarin varieties in the field. This is the first record of Scledrotinia twig blight on trees and cottony rot on stored fruits of Satsuma mandarin in Korea.
