  • In order to suggest the methodology for improving the equality of flow distribution in a distribution channel, wet tests were carried out for pilot plant which was scaled down to 1/8 of full scale distribution channel being operated in domestic K_water treatment plant. The correlation between various hydraulic variables and their effects on the equality of flow distribution was evaluated through wet tests using pilot plant. From the results of wet tests, the longitudinal baffle with orifices was installed in the distribution channel, the equality of flow distribution was improved on the condition that the Froude number in pilot plant was similar with that in the full scale channel. Also, the opening ratio of the orifices on the longitudinal baffled did not have influence on the performance of the equality of flow distribution when the average flow velocity and Froud number were relatively low (Froude number ${\fallingdotseq} 0.01$). In the other hand, the performance of the equality of flow distribution was improved with increasing the opening ration of on the longitudinal baffle under conditions of relatively high average flow velocity and high Froud number(${\gtrsim}0.1$)

  • This study was conducted to qualify the equality of the flow distribution from open channel between rapid mixing basin and flocculation basins in a domestic full-scale water treatment plant, and suggest a remedy for improving the equality. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested remedy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique are used, and for verifying the CFD simulation results wet tests were carried out for the pilot scale channel based on geometric similarity. From the results of CFD simulation and wet tests, it was investigated that the modification of hydraulic structure in the distribution channel, which is to install the longitudinal orifice baffle in flow direction, could improve the equality of the flow distribution. Also, in the case that Froude number is relatively small (Froude number <<0.03), the open ratio of orifices on the installed baffle hardly affects the equality of flow distribution.

  • This study was conducted to qualify the equality of the flow distribution from open channel between rapid mixing basin and flocculation basins in a domestic S_ water treatment plant, and to suggest a remedy for improving the equality. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested remedy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique are used, and for verifying the CFD simulation results tracer tests were carried out. From the results of CFD simulation and tracer tests, it was investigated that the modification of hydraulic structure in the distribution channel, which is to install the longitudinal orifice baffle in flow direction, could improve the equality of the flow distribution over 75%.

  • The inequitable flow distribution to flocculation basins is an important problem faced in many water treatment plants. This is caused by the structure of a distribution channel, the height differences of outlet weirs etc. But, a modified approach for the structures has no effectiveness to achieve flow equality. The aim of this study is to reduce the inequality by adopting optimized inlet valve opening (%) of the flocculation basins using DOE (Design of Experiments) and RSA (Response Surface Analysis). The inlet valve openings (%) and inflow distributions (%) of 6 paralleled basins were set as factors (X) and characteristics(Y) respectively. 2 level factorial experiments and RSA were conducted for optimization and regression analysis (Y = f(X) + Const.). Adopting the optimized inlet valve opening (%) at field, standard deviation of flow distribution (%) and effluent turbidity was declined from 3.80% to 0.42% and from 0.29 NTU to 0.03 NTU respectively.

  • In this paper, a new approach is proposed to select the optimal sitting and sizing of distributed solar photovoltaic generation (SPVG) in a radial electrical distribution systems (EDS) considering load/generation uncertainties. Here, distributed generations (DGs) allocation problem is modeled as optimization problem with network loss based objective function under various equality and inequality constrains in an uncertain environment. A boundary power flow is utilized to address the uncertainties in load/generation forecasts. This approach facilitates the consideration of random uncertainties in forecast having no statistical history. Uncertain solar irradiance is modeled by beta distribution function (BDF). The resulted optimization problem is solved by a new Dynamic Harmony Search Algorithm (DHSA). Dynamic band width (DBW) based DHSA is proposed to enhance the search space and dynamically adjust the exploitation near the optimal solution. Proposed approach is demonstrated for two standard IEEE radial distribution systems under different scenarios.

  • The present paper discusses the traditional empirical equations of friction factor or cross-sectional mean velocity of open channel flow and suggests the new form of friction factor equation. Dimensional analysis is conducted for the possible forms of traditional empirical equations in order to satisfy the dimensional equality, and new forms of empirical equations are presented with introducing equivalent roughness height. Considering the distribution of friction factor against Reynolds number which has a similar characteristics to that of smooth turbulent flow in circular pipe, the friction factor equation of rectangular open channel flow is developed by modifying the friction factor equation of circular pipe flow for the region of smooth turbulent flow. The equations including the dimensionally-corrected empirical equations are tested against Bazin's laboratory experiments.

  • The optimization is an important role in wide geographical distribution of electrical power market, finding the optimum solution for the operation and design of power systems has become a necessity with the increasing cost of raw materials, depleting energy resources and the ever growing demand for electrical energy. In this paper, the real coded biogeography based optimization is proposed to minimize the operating cost with optimal setting of equality and inequality constraints of thermal power system. The proposed technique aims to improve the real coded searing ability, unravel the prematurity of solution and enhance the population assortment of the biogeography based optimization algorithm by using adaptive Gaussian mutation. This algorithm is demonstrated on the standard IEEE-30 bus system and the comparative results are made with existing population based methods.

  • The unsteady conjugate forced convection-conduction heat transfer from a plate fin is numerically studied. The external forced flow is steady but the temperature of the fin base is an exponential change with time. Therefore, the unsteady energy equations of the fluid and the fin are solved simultaneously under the conditions of equality in heat flux and temperature at the fluid-fin interface at every instant of time. Numerical results are given for various quantities of interest including the local heat transfer coefficient, the local heat flux, the total heat transfer rate and the temperature distribution of fin under the effects of the convection-conduction parameter and the ratio of thermal diffusivities. The results of the present numerical solution have been compared with those of the conventional fin theory.
