  • In this paper, new and simple optical transmission link with fixed dispersion management (DM) scheme, i.e., pre(post) compensation and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) are fixed to net residual dispersion (NRD) = 0 ps/nm, and optical phase conjugator (OPC) having optimal position depending on launch power in WDM transmission system is proposed. Also, effective launch power range of WDM channels resulting 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP) is induced as a function of OPC position. First, it is confirmed that, for applying DM into WDM transmission link fixed pre(post)compensation and RDPS, which are independence on exact system parameters except launch power, sufficiently are used in WDM links, but OPC with optimal position is needed for effective compensating impairments of WDM channels. And, it is confirmed that effective launch power is broader in case of RDPS = 100 ps/nm than in RDPS = 50 ps/nm. But, it is shown that the best OPC position offset is -0.6 km from a point of view of power window, which is defined as difference between maximum and minimum effective launch power.

  • In this paper, we have developed a frequency mixer for the microwave phase conjugator. The circuit topology is the gate mixer using a pseudomorphic HEMT device. The operating frequencies are 4.0 GHz 2.01 GHz, and 1.99 GHz for LO, RF, and IF, respectively. Conversion gain is measured to be 12 dB and 1 dB compression point -34 dBm at the LO power of -4 dBm.

  • Mutually pumped phase conjugator(MPPC) is experimentally investigated and analyzed in terms of fanning gratings of a photorefractive BaTiO$_3$ crystal. As considering the intensity-dependent absorption and coupling cofficients in photorefractive two wave mixing, the dependence of phase conjugate reflectivites on the incident angle, beam ratio, and total intensity in MPPC is analyzed.

  • The numerical methods of finding out the optimal position of optical phase conjugator (OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersions are prosed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $8{\times}40Gbps$Gbps WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) as an optical fiber. And BER characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with the currently used mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the applying two induced optimal parameters into WDM system contribute to reduce power penalty to 4 times than that of WDM system with the conventional MSSI. Thus, the methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which generates a serious problem if it was not made but it is the condition in the case of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.

  • In this paper, we have developed a frequency mixer which can be used as a microwave phase conjugator in the LS band retrodirective antenna system. The mixer as a phase conjugator must have an If signal of which frequency is nearly as high as that of an RF signal, so this fact brings difficulty in the combination of input signals and the design of impedance matching circuit. The circuit configuration is chosen to be of the gate mixer using a pseudomorphic HEMT device. The operating frequencies are 4.00 ㎓, 2.01 ㎓, and 1.99 ㎓ for LO, RF, and IF, respectively. Conversion gain is measured to be 12.5 ㏈ and 1 ㏈ compression point -34 ㏈m at the LO power of -7 ㏈m. The mixer fabricated in this research is the single-ended type, where RF leakage signal appears inevitably at the If port because RF and If frequencies are almost the same. The circuit topology suggested here can be applied directly to the design of balanced-type mixers and phase conjugators.

And the compensation characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the optimal parameter values induced in this approach are very useful to effectively compensate overall channels in WDM system with OPC. And, it is confirmed that two optimal parameters depend on each other, but less related with the searching procedure. The methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which is a serious problem of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.

  • The method of overcoming the limitation of optical phase conjugator applied into optical long-haul link for transmitting high capacity wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels was investigated. The configuration of optical link was based on dispersion-managed link, in which dispersion compensating fiber inserted into each fiber span with single mode fiber, and optical phase conjugator was added into suitable location of link. The maximum number of fiber spans as a function of the launch power of WDM channels in optical link with optical phase conjugator placed at the proposed location was induced and compared for analyzing the compensation performance of the distorted WDM channels. It was confirmed that the more optical phase conjugator depart from the midway of total transmission length, the less the distorted WDM channels was compensated, however, it was also confirmed that the degradation of compensation can be overcome by the suitable value of residual dispersion per span and by the reasonable choice of fiber span controlling total dispersion accumulated in overall transmission link.

  • In this paper, it is investigated that the limitation due to the asymmetry of optical power and chromatic dispersion with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC) for compensating optical signal distortion of WDM channels in mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique is overcame by using OPC position offset and optimal dispersion coefficients of fiber sections, which depend on OPC position offset. It is confirmed that overall WDM channels are efficiently compensated by applying the optimal parameter values obtained from the proposed method into 24 channels ${\times}\;40\;Gbps$ WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) of 1,000 km, such as power penalties of inter-channel are reduce to almost 3.5 dB from the infinite value. It is also confirmed that the flexible design of WDM system with OPC is possible by using the optimal parameters, in which OPC is placed at ${\pm}15\;km$ from 500 km for efficiently compensating overall channels.
