  • The NASA Antarctica balloon experiment CREAM has successfully collected the data of energetic cosmic rays during six flights in past years. It recently observed the unexpected discrete hardening in energy spectra of comic rays. However high-statistics data of energetic cosmic rays are required for the further investigation of the unexpected hardening in comic-ray energy spectra. The International Space Station (ISS) is an ideal platform for the CREAM experiment to investigate the unexpected hardening and explore the fundamental issues like the acceleration mechanism and the origin of energetic cosmic rays because of the high duty cycle of the experiment in the ISS platform. We will present the design of the ISS-CREAM experiment, and the development and fabrication status of the detector components including the 4-layer silicon charge detector which will measure the charge constitution of cosmic rays with unprecedented accuracy.

  • The growth of Web comics is very noticeable in Korean comic market as the 21st century is entered. In amongst these1 trends, the scroll comics had established it self as one of the main stream form for expression, outside the form of the traditional published comics, so it is providing a new visual experience for the readers. The scroll method uses the large vertical space that is uncomparable to the column compartment of the printed comics, and its uses of animation-like techniques, innovative partitioning, flob styles and narration partition positioning, the limitless canvas and the scroll bar of the web page, is leading the digital comic age. However, it is still very uncertain whether the 'scroll comics' will still be valid in the age of Web2.0. It is concerning that even though there are limitless potential in the realms of digital and web, the web comics seem to be bound to one particular medium, 'scroll'. In this report, the form of expression in the scroll centered web comics will be analyzed, and based on this, the future evolution of digital comics shall be investigated.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of step-by-step educational comic book behavior of the elementary school students and their reading levels on their learning competencies. To this end, qualitative research with focus group and deep interviews was conducted with students on different reading levels. During their repetitive reading activities, the students tended to use various educational comics within the same subjects area on their corresponding reading levels. Such behavior led the students to further read other books than comics in the similar subjects areas, and by doing so, the books acted as an important reference to the students' class materials. It was found that the students' such behavior has positive impact on the improvement of their learning competencies. It is hoped that this study will be supportive to develop self-study methods and effective reading guidance plans by improving the usage of educational comics.

  • There is an increasing interest in contents such as movie, drama and game using transmedia storytelling. It includes Le Grand Chef, The War of Flower, Dae Jang Geum, The Matrix, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. However, transmedia contents have not always been successful. To study the factors affecting possible outcomes of transmedia storytelling, we analyzed the intention on transmedia of potential consumers who have not been exposed to transmedia contents before. To this end, we investigated two different cases : first, potential customer intention to watch dramas which will be produced after launching comic-based movies; second, potential customer intention to see movies which will be made after broadcasting comic-based TV dramas. In each case, we analyzed the outcomes from potential customers by applying several variables including gender, exposure to the original and components of contents (plot, quality of act and music etc). Our study showed that potential customers prefer movies or TV dramas with quality of acting, directing, casting and storylines. Interestingly, the quality of acting is more important in dramas than in movies and casting is an appealing factor to potential customers in movies. In TV drama cases, potential customers have high watching intentions when they read the original content. Among them, male potential customer have low watching intentions on TV drama when they did not read the original content. However, female potential customers have high watching intentions on TV drama regardless of the previous exposure to the originals. In movie cases, female potential customers have higher intentions on seeing movies than male. These results suggest that one needs to consider several factors such as casting, acting and gender for generating transmedia contents with a high probability of success.

The development was based on a previous study on the perception and information needs of elementary school students on artificial food colors including that the students usually were interested in artificial food colors, but didn't know about those well, and they wanted to get information on the safety of their intake, function and necessity of food color additives. Based on the above results, a comic book on artificial food colors was developed as a risk communication material for the elementary school students by brainstorming and consultation with experts. The book was titled as 'Variegated artificial food colors! Understanding and Eating'. It contained basic information on food additives focused on artificial food colors including definition, function, calculation of ADI, usage of artificial food colors, quizzes and useful web sites, etc. The results of field evaluation for the developed material by 101 elementary school students were very positive in getting the correct information, understanding artificial food colors and having proper attitude for healthy dietary life. Therefore, the developed material could be used to help elementary school students have proper perception on artificial food colors and facilitate the risk communication on food additives.
