  • We present a color-magnitude (CM) diagram of M35, an open cluster. A DSLR camera was used for measuring the color index with the RGB channels. It is cost-effective and has relatively easy controls compared to astronomical CCDs for educational environments. The 8-inch refracting telescope was used at the Korea Science Academy of KAIST in Busan. The B-G color index was obtained from observations and the magnitudes from publications in order to draw CM diagram. The linear correlation of B-G to B-V is found. The RGB channel of the DSLR camera can be easily represented on the CM diagram for astronomical education with aid of easy controls.

  • We present BV CCD photometry of metal-rich globular cluster M71. Based on our color-magnitude diagram (CMD), we derive the distance to M71 using a sample of Hipparcos subdwarfs of similar metallicity. Our distance modulus is (m - M)v = 13.46(${\pm}0.17$. CMD comparison was also made between M71 and 47 Tuc. We confirm that there exists a significant age differonce(> 2 billion years) in spite of their Similarity in metallicity.

  • UBVIJHK photometry of the open cluster NGC 2194 are presented. Color-Magnitude diagrams of this cluster show well-defined main sequence and red giant clump. The main sequence also contains clear evidence of binary populations. Based on color-color diagrams, absolute magnitude of red giant clump, ZAMS fitting, and comparisons of observed color-magnitude diagrams with theoretical models, we derive following parameters for the cluster; reddening $E(B-V)=0.44{\pm}0.04$, age of log $t{\sim}8.8$, and finally distance of $(m-M)_0=12.20{\pm}0.18$.

  • We study near-infrared properties of the old open cluster King 11, based on the 2MASS photometric data. We determine the location of the red giant clump(RGC) in the (K, J - K) colo-magnitude diagram and derive the distance modulus of King 11 to be $(m-M)_0$ = $12.50{\pm}0.10$ using the mean K magnitude of RGC. From the red giant branch slope - [Fe/H] relation we obtain the metallicity of this cluster, [Fe/H]=$-0.17{\pm}0.07$. The age and interstellar reddening of this cluster are estimated to be log t = $9.48{\pm}0.05$, E(B-V)=$0.90{\pm}0.03$, by applying Padova isochrone fits to the data.

  • We present a new galaxy classification scheme in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) [$3.4{\mu}m$]-[$12{\mu}m$] color versus $12{\mu}m$ luminosity diagram. In this diagram, galaxies can be classified into three groups in different evolutionary stages. Late-type galaxies are distributed linearly along "MIR star-forming sequence" identified by Hwang et al. (2012). Some early-type galaxies show another sequence at [3.4]-[12] $(AB){\simeq}-2.0$, and we call this 'MIR blue sequence'. They are quiescent systems with old stellar population older than 10 Gyr. Between the MIR star-forming sequence and the MIR blue sequence, some early- and late-type galaxies are sparsely distributed, and we call these galaxies 'MIR green cloud galaxies'. Interestingly, both MIR blue sequence galaxies and MIR green cloud ones lie on the red sequence in the optical color-magnitude diagram. However, MIR green cloud galaxies have lower stellar masses and younger stellar populations (smaller $D_n4000$) than MIR blue sequence galaxies, suggesting that MIR green cloud galaxies are in the transition stage from MIR star-forming sequence galaxies to MIR blue sequence ones. We present differences in various galaxy properties between the three MIR classes using a multi-wavelength data, combined with the WISE and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10, of local (0.03 < z < 0.07) galaxies.

  • Near infrared JHK magnitudes are presented for two hundred two high proper motion stars. We have observed high proper motion stars in the near-infrared bands(JHK) using the COB detector on the Kitt Peak 1.3m, 2.1m and 4m telescopes. The observations and data reduction procedures are described. The infrared color magnitude diagram and color-color diagrams for the program stars are presented.

  • NGC 6716 is an intermediate-age open cluster in Sagittarius. In this paper, we present the new UBV CCD photometry of the stars in the cluster, which is deeper than previous ones. From the color-color diagram and the color-magnitude diagram, we derived a reddening $E_{B- V} = 0.17\pm0.03$ and a distance modulus of the cluster, $(V - Mv)_o = 9.2\pm0.1$. An age of the cluster is estimated as $8\pm10^7 yrs$ from the latest isochrone. Luminosity function and mass function of the cluster are derived. The gradient of the mass function of bright stars is a bit steep, $\Gamma = -1.85\pm0.05$, and there is no distinct bump and dip in the mass function.

  • The sample of sub dwarfs are selected from LHS catalogue on the bases of the reduced proper motion diagram utilizing Chui criteria, and confirmed with the available photometric and/or kinematic data. Among them, 20 sub dwarfs have trigonometric parallaxes with accuracy better than $20\%$. The colorabsolute magnitude relation is derived with them. By adopting this color-magnitude relation and $V/V_m$ method, we have derived the sub dwarf luminosity function over the absolute magnitude range of $M_v$= 4.5 and 9.5. This halo luminosity function is consistent with that of Eggen(1987). By adopting the available mass-luminosity relations for halo stars, we have found that the halo IMF is steeper than disk IMFs of Scalo(1986) and Salpter(1955) in this small mass region.

  • We calculate theoretical isochrones in a consistent way for five filters near the K-band, K, K', $K_s$, F205W, and F222M. Even when displayed in the same Vega magnitude system, the near-infrared colors of the same isochrone can differ by up to 0.18 mag at its bright end, depending on the filter. We analyze isochrones for several different extinction values, and find that a care is needed when comparing extinction values that are estimated by different filter sets, in particular when comparing those between atmospheric and space filter sets. To alleviate this problem, we present an 'effective extinction law' for each filter set and isochrone model, which describes extinction behaviour of isochrones in the observed color-magnitude diagram.
