  • This studies was carried out to investigate the soil contamination and water quality affected by agricultural activities in the Keum river Districts. Soil pH of the Keum river districts were $5.56{\sim}7.09$ in Keum river headwater and Namdae-cheon but that of Keumgang-lake were $5.07{\sim}7.21$ because of the cattle shed and industrial complex around. Total nitrogen contents of soils were found difference as period of fertilizer application. Total phosphorous content of soils no difference were found between the headwater and Keumgang-lake. Heavy metal contents of soils were natural background level. Water pH of the Keum river districts ranged from 6.59 to 7.80 and COD was maintain below 1.0 mg/L. Total nitrogen content affected by a livestock wastes and sewage water were the higher than that of others and total phosphorous content showed below 0.5 mg/L. Nitrate nitrogen and ortho-phosphate contents were very high according to the influence a livestock waste and sewage water in headwater region of the Keum river partly. Chlorine and sulfate contents were high according to the influence of sea water invasion. Heavy metal contents of waters were natural background level.

  • Three of the most important factors governing liquid transmission inunsaturated soils are field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, Kfs matric flux potential , ${\Phi}$m and sorptivity, S. The Guelph Permeameter is an in-hole constant-head permeameter, employing the Mariotte Principle. The study was carried out to investiate the characteristics of the water hsed average infiltration coefficient measured by the Guelph Permeameter at the Backokpo watershed in the Han river and at the Bandong watershed in the Keum river.

  • In recent years the human impact on the environment becomes increasing lift threatening, calls for the better management of resources. In field of water quality of river flow, the best way to conserve water quality is specific efforts to control the pollutant loadings and treat the loadings in the basin to reduce the discharge of pollutant loadings to river. But in general the water quality influenced by the dam discharge. Especially in dry season, it is more dominant way to improve the water quality which contaminated with the pollutant loadings from the basin. The dam discharge amounts of the 2 dams in the Keum River that maintain the down stream water quality were estimated for the year of 1999, 2001, 2006, 2011, in case of irrigation and non-irrigation seasons. The pollutant loadings for the basin are estimated with the planning of treatment plants construction schedule for every sub-basins. The river flow rates were considered low flow as 2.33 year low flow and 10 year low flow. The QUAL2E model was used as a tool of simulation.

  • To estimate the nutrients delivery characteristics of Chogang stream to Keum River, sediment and soil characteristics were analyzed in the stream and in the stream bank. Along the stream, soil samples from river sediment were collected and tested monthly for phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations. Nitrogen concentration in the sediment is much lower than that of soil in the river bank especially in summer presumably due to the high desorption characteristics of nitrogen by the increasing rainfall energy during summer. Instead, the concentrations of phosphorus were similar for the sediment and the soil in the river bank due to the strong adsorption characteristics of phosphorus. Batch tests were performed to evaluate the desorption potential of the sediments. Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was applied to quantify soil erosion in each watershed due to rainfall. It was estimated that approximately 25% of total phosphorus by mass basis could be released from the sediment if the water was disturbed vigorously. The mass load of nitrogen and phosphorus into the Chogang Stream from the watershed were evaluated from the USLE and release ratio of phosphorus.

  • Tidal asymmetry in the Keum River Estuary has been investigated from the observed tides. Despite strong frictional attenuation within the estuary, the $M_4$ tides reach significant amplitude, resulting in strong tidal distortion. The observed asymmetry over the area shows that generally more intense flood flows transport more sediment that do less intense ebb flows of longer duration. This causes filling of the estaury as evidenced by sand flats spreaded over the inner area. The spatial distribution of peak bottom stress associated with the dominant $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides calculated via two-dimensional numerical tidal model suggest that present tidal sedimentation regimemay be altered, sepecially in the approach channel to outer Kunsan Port and downstream part of the dike, due to the construction of barrier.

  • This study proposes a new methodology to derive the areal reduction factor (ARF) using mixed probability density functions. Estimation of ARFs requires using the simultaneous rainfall data over the basin, which is rarely available in general. The new methodology Proposed in this study uses more available daily rainfall data during a given period, so the mixed probability density functions should be introduced to explain both the rainfall intermittency and variability. This study applied the mixed gamma distribution for the derivation of ARFs for the Keum river basin, and found that the new method is easier for application as well as it provides very comparable results.

  • This study elucidates the interrelationship between climatic, morpological, and hydraulic milieu in the drainage basins of Keum-gae river from the viewpoint of ecogeography. The region of this basin is located at low-relief hills. Because hills are made up of granitic regolith by deep weathering, the rate of permeability is very high. And, the speed of drainage is very fast, and the deficit of water easily revealed and BOD is very high. Therefore a great deals of efforts are needed for the maintenance of stable milieu.

  • This study aims to identify spatial distribution of estuarine wetlands in Korea, and to assess temporal variation of the wetlands in the last few decades. Widely known in environmental and coastal management, watershed-based regions which composed with Han-river(western and eastern parts), Keum-river, Yeoungsan-river, Seomjin-river, Nakdong-river, and Jeju, are analyzed to evaluate temporal change of estuarine wetlands in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, through the land-cover map. Results show that estuarine wetlands dramatically decreased in Han-river(western part), Keum-river, Yeoungsan-river that estuarine circulation have been interrupted with man-made structures such as dyke and drainage. But, estuarine wetlands surrounded by forests and grasslands has been relatively less damaged. Habitat diversity providing healthy estuary ecosystem is lower in interrupted estuaries than circulated estuaries, which are composed of tidal-flat, open water, salt marsh, rocky coasts and sandy shoreline. This study indicates that spatial distribution and temporal variation of estuarine wetlands are different with estuary type and region, so estuary type with seven regions can be applied to provides a framework for estuary management strategies and to establish estuary restoration plans.

  • Based on field observed tide, tidal currents and depth data, hydrodynamic changes on the Keum River Estuary has been analyzed in which huge complex constructions has been made simultaneously. According to the analyses from acquired data over 2 years, rapid increasing of tidal currents and resulting scouring of 50 cm/yr has been reported in flow-guided dikes region of Kunsan Outer Port. However inner part of the Saemankeum sea dike and Kunjang Industrial Complex dike, 30 cm of sedimentation were found during 2 months of fall season in tidal flats and hence very rapid transition of hydrodynamic system on this area are resulted from those constructions which are still on going nearby.
