  • Practical automated flat pattern generation with inbuilt production features for doubly curved sheet metal components (SMCs) is addressed here utilizing a new and unique Point Transformation Algorithm (PTA). This is the third in the series of papers on practical Flat Pattern Development (FPD) [8] and Production Loft Generation Systems (PLGS) [9] complementing the pioneering work [6,7]. In the first two publications, automated loft generation programs have addressed sheet metal components having a Principal Flat Surface (PFS) only. The flat pattern development of 3-D components that do not have the flat surface(termed as Non-PFS components) having complex features of double curvature in addition to cutouts and nibbled holes typical of aircraft components were so far not addressed due to lack of relevant published algorithms. This paper traces the evolution of developments and provides the record of fully illustrated, automated loft generation scheme for aircraft SMCs including the Non-PFS components which underwent validation through production tests by sponsors. Details of some of the unique features of the system like simplified surface model generation, termed as topological model and powerful algorithms deployed with potential for CAD/CAM applications are included.

  • This paper introduces the first vital area identification (VAI) process for the physical protection of nuclear power plants (NPPs) during low power and shutdown (LPSD) operation. This LPSD VAI is based on the 3rd generation VAI method which very efficiently utilizes probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) event trees (ETs). This LPSD VAI process was implemented to the virtual NPP during LPSD operation in this study. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) had developed the 2nd generation full power VAI method that utilizes whole internal and external (fire and flooding) PSA results of NPPs during full power operation. In order to minimize the huge burden of the 2nd generation full power VAI method, the 3rd generation full power VAI method was developed, which utilizes ETs and minimal PSA fault trees instead of using the whole PSA fault tree. In the 3rd generation full power VAI method, (1) PSA ETs are analyzed, (2) minimal mitigation systems for avoiding core damage are selected from ETs by calculating system-level target sets and prevention sets, (3) relatively small sabotage fault tree that has the systems in the shortest system-level prevention set is composed, (4) room-level target sets and prevention sets are calculated from this small sabotage fault tree, and (5) the rooms in the shortest prevention set are defined as vital areas that should be protected. Currently, the 3rd generation full power VAI method is being employed for the VAI of Korean NPPs. This study is the first development and application of the 3rd generation VAI method to the LPSD VAI of NPP. For the LPSD VAI, (1) many LPSD ETs are classified into a few representative LPSD ETs based on the functional similarity of accident scenarios, (2) a few representative LPSD ETs are simplified with some VAI rules, and then (3) the 3rd generation VAI is performed as mentioned in the previous paragraph. It is well known that the shortest room-level prevention sets that are calculated by the 2nd and 3rd generation VAI methods are identical.

  • Nowadays, as-is BIM generation has been popularly adopted in the architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC/FM) industries. In order to generate a 3D as-is BIM of a structural component, current methods require a registration process that merges different sets of point cloud data obtained from multiple locations, which is time-consuming and registration error-prone. To tackle this limitation, this study proposes a registration-free 3D point cloud data acquisition technique for as-is BIM generation. In this study, small-size mirrors that rotate in both horizontal and vertical direction are used to enable the registration-free data acquisition technique. First, a geometric model that defines the relationship among the mirrors, the laser scanner and the target component is developed. Second, determinations of optimal laser scanner location and mirror location are performed based on the developed geometrical model. To validate the proposed registration-free as-is BIM generation technique, simulation tests are conducted on key construction components including a PC slab and a structural wall. The result demonstrates that the registration-free point cloud data acquisition technique can be applicable in various construction elements including PC elements and structural components for as-is BIM generation.

  • This paper aims at enhancing the electric production efficiency of photovoltaic(PV) system. The electrical power of PV system is proportional to light intensity on a PV module surface. In this paper, we apply two types of systems to enhance power generation efficiency. First, of all, concentring sunlight using specular surface and one-axis tracking system which traces the sun with vertical direction are applied in this project. From this, we analyze the fixed type method and power generation efficiency.

  • We demonstrate that trasition metal catalyst nanoparticle (NP) attached to carbon nitride nanotubes (CNNTs) show selective catalytic activities on hydrogen generation from the water solution including chemical hydride negative ions. The natural bonding orbitals (NBO) obtained from the first-principle calculations shows that the catalysts attached on CNNTs are quite differently polarized when they play for hydrogen generation from chemical hydride ions and hydrogen of water. For Co and Ni nanoparticles attached on CNNTs, their charges are more positively polarized when they interact with $BH_4^-Na^+$ and $H_2O$ while Pt atoms are less positively charged. In this matter, the increased positive charges on catlyst nanoparticles are proven to be more efficient in attracting hydride negative ions, thus improving hydrogen generate rates. Consequently, this result implies that these different charge polarization leads to selective catalytic activities of NPs-CNNTs. In the hydrogen generation experiments, Co-CNNTs shows the highest hydrogen generation rate when the similar amounts of catalyst nanoparticles (Co, Ni, and Pt) are dispersed on the sidewalls of CNNTs.

  • KIER have been developing high-temperature solar technology, especially the solar thermal power generation system, since the early of 1990s. In 1994, the first research on high temperature solar technology started with PTC technology. At the moment the most advanced 10kW dish system is under demonstration for 10kW solar thermal power generation. Test results showed about 19.2% solar to electricity average efficiency. Another research activities of KIER is hybrid power generation. For hybridization, solar and LFG(landfill gas) are used. Another hybrid solar system is with solar chemical reaction. In this system, power unit is gas turbine, and the heat content of fuel(like natual gas) is upgraded by solar energy through chemical reaction. The latest project on solar thermal power generation is for 1 MW power tower system. This is the Korea-China Joint project.

  • In concert with the growing emphasis placed on distributed power generation there will be a need, in the first decade of the 21th century, for a compact thermal energy system capable of providing the total energy needs of individual homes. A natural gas fueled co-generation micro-turbine with ultra low emission will meet this need. Market opportunities for a distributed micro turbine co-generation system are projected to increase dramatically. In this paper, It was determined that with current state of art component performance levels, metrallic materials, thermal efficiency goal of $28\%$ at sea level standard day conditions are attainable. Higher overall thermal efficiency of $78\%$ is attainable with micro-turbine combined with exhaust fired boilers.

  • Recently, lots of research on automated test data generation has been actively done. However, techniques for automated test data generation presented so far have been proved ineffective for programs with flag variables. It can present problems when considering embedded systems such as engine controllers that make extensive use of flag variables to record state information concerning devices. This paper introduces a technique for generating test data effectively for programs with flag variables. The presented technique transforms the test data generation problem into a SAT(SATisfiability) problem and makes advantage of SAT solvers for automated test data generation(ATDG). For the ends, we transform a program under test into Alloy which is the first-order relational logic and then produce test data via Alloy analyzer.
