  • In the 21st century, universal design has started to expand as new design value system for the diversity and various need of user: a new design that can reflects the welfare of the society. In addition, the percentage of population over 65 years old has been rising rapidly in Korea, and we are expected to reach 'aged society' with 14.3% of elderly population in 2018. In rural districts, population of the elderly has already reached 'super-aged society' with over 20%. With the rapid increase of the number of the elderly, the need for social service system is rising. For the independent living of the elderly, the dwelling space that supports their lifestyle is the most important factor. The purpose of this study was to extract issue of housing in the rural districts in terms of universal design concept and reflecting the cultural and living characteristics of rural districts. With this, additionally, this study make understood about the necessity and important of universal design housing to reflect the characteristics of rural districts. For this study, data were collected from field survey and interview. The major results showed the following. 1) There were very various type of housing in rural districts. Spatial composition and shape was not related to living behavior and cultural characteristics of rural district. 2) The most new constructed housing was similar to urban housing type. It means that housing with respect to living culture of users in rural district must be developed. 3) In rural housing, they all had outdoor building (included storehouse, bathroom/toilet, kitchenet, etc.) relating to a series of work behavior. • To identify the characteristics of the dropping habits and to provide improved methods for sign survey of Siberian flying squirrels Pteromys volans, an investigation was carried out in Jirisan National Park from April 2012 to May 2013. The latrines of study area were checked once a month and the characteristics of dropping behavior were camera trapped. The feces of Siberian flying squirrel were found on the point which tree forked, mostly from November to May. The squirrel actively presents in forked tree mainly on the September to April. The Siberian flying squirrel is found to be a typical nocturnal animal as it actively move between 6p.m. to 7a.m.. The study found that squirrel does feeding and dropping in the winter time on forked tree. On the point which tree forked could be a good place for the squirrel to hide from their predator when there is no leaf on the tree. Conducting the sign survey is advisable from November to May, as well as with the careful approach to the animals. As Siberian flying squirrel is an endangered species, adjusting the survey period is mandatory, especially when doing environmental impact assessment and a research on its dwelling areas.

  • Objectives: It has been found that health promotion interventions are effective to decrease morbidity among older people. The acceptability of interventions are, however, still troublesome for achievement of efficacy of health promotion interventions. The current study examines the effects of age identity and attitude toward aging on the use of health promotion programs among older people. Methods: Data from the Survey of Living Conditions of Korean Older Persons were used. Logistic regression models were tested using a nationally representative sample of 9,461 community-dwelling older individuals who are 65 years old and over. Results: Older individuals who have younger age identity and more negative attitude toward aging were less likely to use health promotion programs, after adjusting the effects of other predisposing, enabling, and need factors such as demographic characteristics and personal health characteristics. Conclusions: Strategies for mitigating the possible effects of age identity and attitude toward aging on the acceptability of health promotion programs are also discussed.

This study deals with apartment housing unit plans built between 1999 and 2000 in Seoul, the capital region and new town. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1) Most apartment housing unit plans have fixed and uniform layouts. Most apartment housing units have L-DK type meaning they have isolated living room space. Certain layouts(especially $60-85\textrm{m}^2$ sized unit plans) show a "trickle-down" phenomenon with respect to the areas of units according to time series. 2) New plan types are rarely proposed since 2000, especially in large-sized(area more than $120\textrm{m}^2$) and $60-85\textrm{m}^2$ sized plans. 3) Another feature of apartment housing unit plans is increase of the service are (balcony, entrance area, additional kitchen, and storage area), and introduction of masters space (composition of master bedroom, dressing room, powder room, path, and etc.) and etc.)

  • Residential satisfaction is one of the most studied topics in the field of housing. This paper is to find factors that correlate with residential satisfaction of the residents and study the satisfaction differences between different groups of residents in urban village in Shenzhen. A questionnaire of 61 satisfaction variables grouped into five components based on literature review and actual situation in targeted village was conducted to find out factors related with residential satisfaction in urban villages. These components are dwelling unit, building conditions, village environment, neighborhood environment, and neighbors. Factors were extracted from these components and the correlations between the factors and residential satisfaction were analyzed by using Pearson's correlation coefficient to find out factors that most correlate to residential satisfaction. Satisfaction differences of the five components between respondents with different characteristics were also studied. The result showed all the factors positively correlated with residential satisfaction and residential satisfaction correlated the most with the factors of perception and information exchange, room sizes, and air condition and quality. The characteristics of gender, unit type, and interaction frequency with neighbors contributed to different satisfaction with certain components.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify major factors associated with physical functioning among the Korean elderly. Methods: Data come from a survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,058 older people aged 60 years or elder living in the community. A hierarchical functioning scale was constructed, using upper and lower body mobility, IADLs, and ADLs. Socioeconomic characteristics, chronic conditions, measures of health status, health service use, and social support were analyzed to explore their influence on functioning. Polytomous logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify major contributing factors to different levels of functioning. Results: Persons of older age, female, with chronic diseases (heart disease, stroke, fracture/dislocation) were consistently more likely to show a higher degree of functional limitation. There were variations, however, among other factors; e.g., those with arthritis were more likely to be only mildly impaired, but not moderately or severely impaired. Conclusions: Older Korean adults living in the community with impaired functioning constitute persons with diverse characteristics. Policy and program activities need to address specific needs of older people in different functioning states.
