The Implications of Global Citizenship and Regional Identity in Multicultural Society in the Field of Geographical Education (다문화사회에서 세계시민성과 지역정체성의 지리교육적 함의)

  • The purpose of this paper is to discuss the educational implications of global citizenship and regional identity in geographic education of multicultural society. Geographical education inquires into places and region on local, regional, national and global scales. Geography studies geographical representation of ethnical, cultural, political diversities of human societies. Therefore geography is a very proper subject for multicultural education. Geography has also inherent legitimacy on multicultural education in the viewpoints that space or region has valued inherent nature which is constructed by human experience, perception and response etc. Citizenship in multicultural education requests some abilities and attitudes of world citizens superior to state or nation oriented citizenship. However the education of world citizenship doesn't mean abandonment of regional identity in geographical education. Citizenship is based on geographical units which have their territories. Regional identity is the feeling of belonging as a member of a certain region, and is formed not only by race, ethnic, gender, political and social position but also by thought of nature, landscape, national identity, regional dialect, and historical context, etc. The regional identity in multicultural society means the homogeneity which includes the heterogeneity of diverse groups, and has a key which solves the conflicts of diverse groups in the region. Consequently multicultural education in geography would focus on the cultivation of regional identities which are founded on critical thinking to solve the conflicts of multicultural society. The geographic education in multicultural society would rather emphasize on region than on race or nation, and can integrate the global vision of world citizenship with the diverse viewpoint of multicultural education.

Regional Identity and Community Paper: A Search for Subject and Method of Geographical Research (지역정체성 연구와 지역신문의 활용 -지리학적 연구주제의 탐색-)

  • In the course of modernization and globalization, each region in Korea has experienced deep subordination to the center of Seoul and the increase of colonization possibility by world capital. In order to overcome the current situation, above all, the strategies should be developed focusing on daily life and life space. The basis for the development of strategies is the establishment of regional identity on life space. It is because of the reason that life space, or small-scale region has drawn wide attention in the research of geography in recent years. Especially, humanistic geography and new regional geography have developed the concerning theory and methodology, and kept going on the research of small-scale regions. Generally speaking, there have been quite large amount of theoretical discussions on small-scale region in recent years in the field of geography. Empirical researches focusing on a particular small-scale region, however, have been rarely made. It seems related to the deficiency of data materials and the obscurity of research framework of small-scale regional geography. A community paper must be very helpful for the geographic research on small-scale region. As community paper is published based on county('gun'), small or mid-size city('si'), or district of large city('gu'), it deals with small news and daily life information closely attached to the region. Accordingly, it functions as a medium of the formation of regional identity. It is also a valuable source material for the validation of regional identity and for the analysis of identity-shaping mechanism. The geographic interests in community paper, first of all, should be taken shape by the work on the geographical distribution and the periodic change of publication situation of community papers in Korea. Another research subject on community paper is the examination of characteristics of the region by analyzing the news and the advertisements. The news in community paper must be a valuable data source of regional studies in geography. Also, the regional identification process of community people through the community paper could be and should be explored, and how the regional centrality, or self-generation based on the identity is achieved will be an important subject.

Development Education Implicit in Geography Curriculum in Japan (일본 지리교육과정을 통해 본 개발교육의 도입과 전개)

  • Development education started in some of developed countries of Europe since 1960s. Japan was interested in the development education with realizing the impotance of quality of life in the late of 1970s after high economical growth in 1960s. Just like Eroupe, development education in Japan was done to citizen by development NGOs. But under close cooperation with JICA and MOE, development education was gradually absorbed in formal education. Development education in Japan is done through interdisciplinary studies and the subjects. Geography national curriculum and textbooks in Japan show that the subject aimed to nurture Japanese in the world in the period from the late of 1960s to the late of 1970s. Thus the period can be named the sprouting time of education of development. But with entering the late of 1980s, geography national curriculum started to focus on fostering global citizenship to students. The turn in the educational aims can be counted as practical start of education of development. And education of development through geography was extended the most in the late of 1990s. But in the recent revised geography national curriculum, emphasis on education of development is reduced a little. It can be told that education of development in Japan arrives at the level of the full growth.

  • The present paper discusses the relationship between human being and space through 'recognition.' Recognition is the natural desire of human being. Every human being wants to be recognized for what they do in everywhere. Human being enhances their own identity and fight for the raison d'etre to be recognized by others. Hegel's recognition is grounded by a process of mutual recognition based on the subject-object view of human beings. On the other hand, the recognition based on inter-subjectivity is founded by the view of human beings emphasizing "we" on the basis of the relationship between you and I. These two meanings of recognition make it possible to newly recognize the relationship between human beings and space. In the paper, I emphasize the role of geography about the invisible space over the geographical recognition regarding the visible space dealing in previously geography. I expect to be recovered the nature of geography by revealing the invisible space. Also, the geographical discovery is presented about two spaces including inaudible space and unwritable space but having story via '$\acute{e}$criture blanche.' In terms of the discovery, I criticize irrationalities and discrepancies of our society and suggest ways of solving problems. The goal of the discussion is to support the overcoming of the immediate geography crisis as well as communicate with the world as humanity.

Jeong Da-san(정다산), His View of Economic Geography - Focused on Mokminsimseo(목민심서) - (목민심서(牧民心書)의 경제지리)

  • Da-san Jeong Yak-yong(정약용) was one of the notable realist in the late 18th century, the second half of Chosun Dynasty. He accentuate the need of national riches and stabilization of the public welfare through his reformat proposal on actual condition. He regarded geography as the necessary knowledge to achieve the national riches and stabilization of the people's livelihood. We can read the contents on agricultural policy and encouragement of farming in Mokminsimseo(목민심서). In Mokminsimseo(목민심서), as coverage on economic geography, he present various policy of encouragement of agriculture as device of agricultural promotion and urges governors initiative on this. On policy of encouragement of agriculture, he insisted that the farmers have side job like horticulture, sericulture and live-stock farming far their rural economy. In sum, Da-san Jeong Yak-yong regarded economic geography as a important subject under realism which aims at improving and reforming contemporary world against 주자학 oriented Confucian classics.

  • The purpose of fusion education is to acquire educational contents efficiently and gain a new worldview. To realize this purpose, I point out that it is urgent to provide common educational content and suggest "place experience" as common content for literature and geography. Local legends present a concrete space and a sharp confrontation with the human world, while shaping the tradition of a place's name. Place experience as common educational content enables a three-dimensional experience of a place that utilizes the characteristics of these local legends. The physical condition, human activity, and implied meaning of a place mediate the student's empirical understanding of folktales. The common area of "place experience" allows us to expect a stereotypical understanding of a learner's place by providing a literary context to learning contents that can flow from the existing geography subject to the simple provision of information. In addition, it facilitates learners' empirical understanding by providing actual and specific objects to learning contents, which can flow abstractly in the existing literature subject. Through this discussion, convergence education demonstrates educational significance by achieving educational efficiency through common educational content and enabling the formation of new thinking.

Who Made Southeast Asia? Personages, Programs and Problems in the Pursuit of a Region

  • This paper explores critically and historically some of the popular academic views concerning the development of the study of Southeast Asia through the lens of the contributions of particular scholars and institutions. Within the broad field of Southeast Asian Studies the focus is on the disciplines of geography, history and ethnology. There are certain views concerning the development of scholarship on Southeast Asia which continue to surface and have acquired, or are in the process of acquiring "mythical" status. Among the most enduring is the claim that the region is a post-Second World War construction primarily arising from Western politico-strategic and economic preoccupations. More specifically, it is said that Southeast Asian Studies for a considerable period of time has been subject to the American domination of this field of scholarship, located in programs of study in such institutions as Cornell, Yale and California, Berkeley, and, within those institutions, focused on particular scholars who have exerted considerable influence on the directions which research has taken. Another is that, based on the model or template of Southeast Asian Studies (and other area studies projects) developed primarily in the USA, it has distinctive characteristics as a scholarly enterprise in that it is multidisciplinary, requires command of the vernacular, and assigns special importance to what has been termed 'groundedness' and historical, geographical and cultural contextualization; in other words, a Southeast Asian Studies approach as distinct from disciplinarybased studies addresses local concerns, interests, perspectives and priorities through in-depth, on-the-ground, engaged scholarship. Finally, views have emerged that argue that a truly Southeast Asian Studies project can only be achieved if it is based on a set of locally-generated concepts, methods and approaches to replace Western ethnocentrism and intellectual hegemony.

The Research on scheme for revitalization of Conversion into World Geodetic Reference System (세계측지계 전환 활성화를 위한 방안 연구)

  • The Nation Geodetic Reference System which presents a consistent location standard used in creating a map or developing national land is defined and managed by the law in a nation. Each nation had used its own geodetic system created by astronomical surveying until recently, when Geodetic Reference System(World Geodetic Reference System) has been developed and used to progress in space and satellite geodetic technologies. Korea also amended its geodetic law in December 2001, converting its national geodetic system whose reference an oval figure is Bessel ellipsoid into the World Geodetic Reference System which uses GRS80 ellipsoid as reference ellipsoid. Accordingly, the National Geography Information Institute improved law and systems related to the change for the effective conversion from its national geodetic system into the World Geodetic Reference System. In addition National geographic information institute of the results of various studies is drawn to the World Geodetic Reference System for switching technology-met some of the institutional foundation Despite of accordance with formalities, National geographic information institute, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs and some local government of the World Geodetic Reference System, and local government has or has not spread in public institutions. Therefore, in order to promote the switch to the World Geodetic Reference System, it is required to analyze current technical and institutional problems and obstacles of the switch to the World Geodetic Reference System and to present the resolutions and to establish policy to achieve them. Accordingly, for the promotion of the switch to the World Geodetic Reference System, this study analyzed the results of previous studies, the current state of the switch to the World Geodetic Reference System and the problems of the switch, and then offered technological and institutional supplements. Furthermore, it standardized the subject and type of the conversion, defined the scope of the tasks of the National Geographic Information Institute and its related organizations, and presented the policy direction for the overall use of the World Geodetic Reference System by 2010.

A Study on Structure of a Faceted Classification for Organizing Korean Food Information (한식 정보 조직을 위한 패싯 구조화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a faceted classification that enables the conceptualization and the organization of Korean food information. 23,470 terms were collected, categorized, and analyzed from the table of contents in 776 monographs and directory headings in portal sites related to Korean food. In order to develop the Korean food classification, common properties were analyzed in the process of categorizing terms. Then basic facets and subfacets were defined and assigned, and hierarchies among facets and concepts, citation orders, and notations were decided. As a result, the classification scheme consisted of 16 basic facets and 85 subfacets. The citation order of facets was proposed in order of Personality facet (kinds of dishes), Matter facet (materials, cooking utensils/equipment/containers, and nutrients), Energy facet (cooking processes and techniques, eating sense, type of cooking, table services, and agents of cooking), Space facet (countries/ethnic groups/geography, and eating places), Time facet (situation/purposes, season, time of meals, periods, and ages). The result of this study will be used for organizing, searching, retrieving, and providing Korean food information effectively around the world. Also, it will provide a foundation for developing subject-oriented classification using facet analysis in other disciplines.

Aspects of Liang Qichao and Choi Namsun's Enlightenment Project (량치차오와 최남선의 계몽 기획 관련 양상)

  • The enlightenment project raised in both Korea and China during the modern period worked as a part of the patriotic enlightenment movement against the imperial powers. Among them, "boy" appeared as the subject of enlightenment, and "sea" appeared as a medium. Specifically, through "Boy Discourse," Liang Qi Chao ultimately envisioned a nation for "subjects", and Choi Nam-seon also seeked to overcome the national crisis as "New Korea" and join the ranks of powerful nations. Liang Qiqiao proposes the concept of a "Boy Nation" and an "Old Nation" through boy discourse, and wishing for the development of the "Boy Nation" through "proficiency training". Choi Nam-seon also recognized that the future of the nation depends on "boys", influenced by Liang Qi-qiao's discourse on boys, and argues that Choseon should cultivate skills to become a "Boy Nation". In addition, Liang Qi-chao and Choi Nam-seon actively spread the "boy discourse" through the creation of poetry. Liang Qi Chao introduced the world's geography and history through poetries related to the sea, while at the same time inspiring a sense of challenge to recognize and pioneer the sea as a pathway that connects the world in a broad sense. Namseon Choi also created a poem that directly linked "the sea" and the "boy" to promote the "adventure at sea" and "the progressive spirit of the sea and the boy".
