Stability Analysis of Rock Slope with Consideration of Freezing-Thawing Depth (동결융해 심도를 고려한 암반사면의 안정성 해석에 관한 연구)

  • Rock slope near the road or railroad is affected by the outside temperature and iterative freezing-thawing process during winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slope which is iniluenced by deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. Method of analysis is homogenization method which find the strength property of discontinuous rock mass and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used, The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing labordtory test of tuff and this quantitative property is used as a basic data of stability analysis of rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in the field rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as a a result we can find the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After determined the freezing-thawing depth of model slope, the pattern of rock mass strength value of model rock slope which excess the limit of self-load is analyzed.

  • As the number of concrete building structures in marine environment increases, it is important to study and predict the durability and the compound deterioration of the concrete which is exposed in both chloride and freezing-thawing damage. The concrete's resistance against freezing and thawing is tested based on KS F 2456, while its chloride ion diffusion coefficient is evaluated based on NT BUILD 492. In result, the more exposure to freezing and thawing process, the shorter life it gets, due to the increased amount of chloride ion diffusion coefficient.

Effects of Freezing Period and Chilling Process after Thawing on Physicochemical Properties and Palatability of Loin from Jeju Island Reared Crossbred Black Pigs (동결 기간 및 해동 후 냉장이 제주 흑돼지고기의 물리화학적, 기호적 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of the chilling process after thawing on pork quality were investigated by comparing the physiochemical properties and palatability of the samples just after thawing(0-TP) and the other chilled at $2^{\circ}C$ for two days after thawing (2-TP). The samples used for this study were obtained from vacuum packaged frozen loin from crossbred black pigs reared on Jeju island, and frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 1 month and 12 months, and then thawing them at $4^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. In the case of loin that was thawed after freezing for 1 month, 2-TP showed a higher water holding capacity and myofibril fragmentation index, lower hardness and chewiness, as well as better juiciness and palatability than 0-TP. However, effects of chilling after thawing were not significant in the case of loin that had been frozen for 12 months.

Effect of High Pressure Freezing and Thawing Process on the Physical Properties of Pork (초고압 동결 및 해동방법이 돈육의 물리적 특성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of various high pressure freezing and thawing treatments on the physical properties of pork. To compare the effects of the freezing and thawing process on meat quality, atmospheric freezing followed by running water thawing (AFRT), pressure shift freezing followed by running water thawing (SFRT), and pressure shift freezing and pressure assisted thawing (SFAT) were conducted at pressure of 250 MPa and cooling temperature of $-22^{\circ}C$. SAFT and SFRT showed a shorter phase transition time and total thawing time than AFRT. The pH value of treated samples increased significantly (p<0.05) compared to unfrozen meat. In addition, SFAT and SFRT showed a higher pHvalue than AFRT. Although the water holding capacity was significantly decreased (p<0.05) for SFAT and SFRT, SFRT reduced drip loss. In regards to color, SFAT and SFRT resulted in a significant increase in color parameters (p<0.05) relative to AFRT, while SFAT produced a higher L*-value. High pressure treatment significantly increased shear force (p<0.05) compared to AFRT, and, where SFRT showed the highest shear force. Therefore, these combined results indicated that the hydrostatic pressure treatment improved the functional properties of pork and increased the freezing and thawing rate.

An Experimental Study on the Freezing and Thawing of Concrete Mixed with Steel Slag (제강 슬래그를 이용한 콘크리트의 동결융해에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The steel slag, a by-product which is produced on the process of manufacturing steel by refining pig iron is mainly used as road materials after aging it. It is necessary to age steel slag for long time in air because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag could make the volume expanded. Due to this reason it prevents steel slag from being used as aggregate of concrete. But steel slag used in this study is controled by a air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Rapid cooling prevents from generating of free-CaO in steel slag. In this study, it was investigated that steel slag manufactured by air-jet method affects on concrete in the freezing and thawing. As results of this study, concrete mixed with steel slag was worse in the freezing and thawing than concrete mixed with sand in spite of using air entraining agent. To obtain durability of concrete in the freezing and thawing, it is desirable to mix 50% of steel slag in concrete per unit weight of volume.

A Numerical Modelling for the Prediction of Phase Transition Time(Ice-Water) in Frozen Gelatin Matrix by Ohmic Thawing Process

  • Ohmic heating occurs when an electric current is passes through food, resulting in a temperature rise in the product due to the conversion of the electric energy into heat. The time spent in the thawing is critical for product sterility and quality. The objective of this study is to conduct numerical modelling between the effect of ohmic thawing intensity on PTT(phase transition time) at constant concentration and the effect of matrix concentrations on PTT at constant voltage condition. the stronger ohmic thawing intensity resulted in decreasing the PTT. High ohmic intensity causes short PTT. And the higher gelatin concentration, the faster increment of PTT. A numerical modeling was executed to predict the PTT influenced by the power intensity using exponential regression and the PTT influenced by gelatin concentration using logarithmic regression. Therefore, from this numerical model of gelatin matrix, it is possible to estimate exact values extensively.

Effects of Cryopreservation and Thawing on Single-Cell Transcriptomes of Human T Cells

  • Cryopreservation and thawing of PBMCs are inevitable processes in expanding the scale of experiments in human immunology. Here, we carried out a fundamental study to investigate the detailed effects of PBMC cryopreservation and thawing on transcriptomes. We sorted Tregs from fresh and cryopreserved/thawed PBMCs from an identical donor and performed single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq). We found that the cryopreservation and thawing process minimally affects the key molecular features of Tregs, including FOXP3. However, the cryopreserved and thawed sample had a specific cluster with up-regulation of genes for heat shock proteins. Caution may be warranted in interpreting the character of any cluster of cells with heat shock-related properties when cryopreserved and thawed samples are used for scRNA-seq.

Freezing-Thawing Resistance of Fiber Reinforced Polymers in Strengthening RC Members (구조보강용 FRP 복합체의 동결용해 저항성 평가 연구)

  • The strengthening performance of FRPs(Fiber Reinforced Polymers) is directly affected by the environmental conditions such as freezing-thawing and moisture because FRPs are usually bonded on the concrete surface. It is, therefore, strongly required to evaluate a durability of bond between FRPs and concrete as well as FRP materials itself. The freezing-thawing resistance of FRPs is evaluated in this study with the variables of freezing-thawing conditions, types of FRP and freezing-thawing cycles. From the test results, it is found that tensile strength and pull-off strength of CFRP are not affected by the freezing-thawing. On the other hands, those of GFRP show a little degradation because of continuous water immersion during thawing process. But, cautions are needed on the bond durability between FRPs and concrete in case of continuous water supplying from adjacent to the concrete.

Effect of Cyclic Freezing-Thawing on Compressive Strength of Decomposed Granite Soils (동결-융해 반복작용으로 인한 화강풍화토의 압축강도 특성 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of cyclic freezing-thawing on the compressive strength characteristics of decomposed granite soils. A plane strain compression (PSC) tests were performed on a series of test specimens with different freezing-thawing cycles and fine contents to investigate the change in compressive strength under the process of freezing-thawing cycles. Also performed were scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests to investigate the change in structural rearrangement from a micro-scale point of view. The test results showed that the soil particles tend to conglomerate when subject to cycles of freezing and thawing, and that the soil with less fines exhibited decreased shear strength due to the cyclic freezing-thawing while the soils with a larger fine content showed the opposite trend.
