The present study was conducted to investigate serologic characteristics, antimicrobial resistance and plasmid profile of 79 E. coli isolated from faecal sample of the wild bird in Busan province (Gangseo, Saha) during the period from November 2004 to February 2005. Many strains were positive for rafiinose (63.3%), sorbitol (96.2%), sucrose (73.4%) and few strains were positive for esculin, arginine dihydrolase, ornithine decarboxylase. Among 79 isolates, O serotypes were O55, O158, O18 and 47 strains (59.5%) were resistant to antimicrobial drugs such as tetracycline (40.5%), carbenicillin (27.8%). 15 strains showed 14 different plasmid bands composed of 1 to 6 bands. They were ranged from 1.6 to 43 kb and harbored 43 kb (11.4%), 5.3 kb (6.3%) and 11.4 kb (5.1%). Plasmid profile of 15 strains were 43 profile (2.5%), 2.4, 43 profile (2.5%) and 5.3, 11.4, 43 profile (2.5%).
Salmonella spp. is of increasing public health concern as causative pathogens of food poisoning. The aim of this study was to investigate the serotypes and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella spp. isolated from duck farms in Daegu-Gyeongbuk province. Also, S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium isolates were further examined for plasmid analysis, phage typing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A total of 34 Salmonella spp. (16.4%) were isolated from duck farms and ten serotypes were identified. The predominant serotypes were S. Typhimurium (23.5%) S. Fyris (17.6%) and S. Haardt (11.8%), S. Agona and S. Enteritidis (respectively 8.8%). Of 34 Salmonella isolates, 15 (44.1%) isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent and multiple resistance (resistance to more than 4 drugs) was observed in 9 strains (26.5%). The high resistance was found to streptomycin (32.4%), tetracycline (29.4%), ampicillin, kanamycin and nalidixic acid (respectively, 26.5%), all Salmonella isolates were susceptible to cefoxitin, cefotaxime, gentamicin, amikacin and ciprofloxacin. All S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium isolates were found to contain only one plasmid (ca. 54 or 55kb, respectively). Among the S. Enteritidis isolates, two phage types were found, PT32a and PT1c, respectively, one isolates did not react with any of the phages used. Whereas, all S. Typhimurium isolates were RDNC (reacts but does not conform). PFGE showed to be a useful typing method better than plasmid analysis and phage typing for discrimination of isolates especially, S. Typhimurium isolates. Our results indicated that the serotypes of Salmonella isolates are widely distributed in duck farms, further epidemiological studies should be carried out.
This paper deals with the isolation of Salmonella on 3 herds during the period from May 1984 to May 1985. Isolated Salmonella were examined for serotypes, adhesive fimbriae, antibiotic susceptibility and detection of R plasmid. The results were as follows; Of total 1505 cattle, 24 Salmonella were isolated from 18 cattle (1.2%) and their serotypes were S. enteritidis (9 strains), S. derby(4 strains), S. infantis (1 strain), $C_1$ group(8 strains), $C_2$ group(1 strain) and untypable(1 strain). Twelve strains of Salmonella were isolated from 227 cattle with diarrhea and their serotypes were S. enteritidis(4 strains), S. derby(3 strains), S. infantis(1 strain), $C_1$ group(3 strains) and untypable(1 strain). The isolation rate of Salmonella in cattle varied from 1.6 to 0.9% in 3 herds, it was higher in summer and autumn and lower with the age. Of total 24 strains, 23 were adhesive type 1 fimbriae. Antibiotic susceptibility test of Salmonella isolated was performed by the agar dilution method, using 9 antibiotics as follows: ampicillin(Am), chloramphenicol(Cm), gentamicin(Gm), kanamycin(Km), nalidixic acid(Na), rifampicin(Rf), streptomycin(Sm), sulfadimethoxine(Su) and tetracycline(Tc). All the strains tested were susceptible to Am, Cm, Gm, Km, Na, Rf and Tc. Of total 24 strains, 23(95.8%) were resistant to Su and 14(58.3%) to Sm. Of the 23 resistant Salmonella strains, all the strains were found to carry R plasmid. Among them, two strains which had the R plasmid conferring SmSu resistance was transferable at $25^{\circ}C$ only.
Total of 78 strains were characterized based on the morphological characteristics of colonies isolated on Schroth, and New & Kerr's media for selection of hypervirulent wild-type Agrobacterium spp from galls, hairy root-like process and soil of Populus, Malus, Salix and Diopyros in Korea. Among them, 48 strains were able to induce tumors in carrot disc. Hypervirulent A. tumefaciens SP101 and SM042 were identified as biotype 1 and biotype 2, respectively, These strains formed fast growing, larger tumors as compared to those induced by other strains. The binary vector pGA643 with kanamycin resistant gene was mobilized from E. coli MC100 into A. tumefaciens strain SM042 isolated from soil, and/or disarmed vector PC2760 using a triparental mating method with E. coli HB101/pRK2013, and transconjugants, A. tumefaciens SM643 and PC643 were obtained in minimal media containing kanamycin and tetracycline. Tobacco tissues were cocultivated with conjugant Agrobacterium and then transferred to selective medium with 2,4-D and kanamycin to induce the transformants. Calli were formed more efficiently in cocultivation with A. tumefaciens SM643 than that with A. tumefaciens PC643. Most of calli transformed with A. tumefaciens PC643 were friable and regenerated into normal plantlets, while the calli transformed with A. tumefaciens SM643 were compact, hard, and mixed with friable calli. The friable calli formed normal shoots, while compact calli did not form shoots but only grew to typical compact tumor calli. When the shoots formed directly from tobacco stems without callus induction after transformation by A. tumefaciens SM643 with wild-type Ti-plasmid, normal transformed plants can be induced without using disarmed Ti-plasmid.
The present research work was conducted to evaluate the beneficial effects as well as the safety aspects of lactobacilli as probiotic. Lactobacilli were isolated from poultry faecal samples, feed samples and from some known preparations procured from poultry feed manufacturers. L. acidophilus and L. sporogenes were tested for the antibacterial activity against four poultry pathogens viz. Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Proteus spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cell free supernatant (CFS) of L. acidophilus exhibited significantly higher antibacterial activity against Salmonella spp. at original pH (4.50${\pm}$0.02). At the adjusted pH (6.50${\pm}$0.02) significantly higher antibacterial activity was recorded against indicator organism except for P. aeruginosa. Likewise, L. sporogenes exhibited similar antibacterial activity at original as well as adjusted pH except for E. coli. Antibacterial activity against E. coli was significantly higher at adjusted pH than at original pH of CFS. The competitive exclusion of E. coli by lactobacilli over the intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) was checked. L. acidophilus strain I, which was of poultry origin, exhibited maximum attachment over IEC as compared to other three strains of non-poultry origin viz. L. acidophilus strain II, L. sporogenes strain I and II. Overall, L. acidophilus exhibited higher competitive exclusion as compared to L. sporogenes. All the lactobacilli of poultry origin were most sensitive to penicillin G, amoxycillin, ampicillin and chloramphenicol, least sensitive to sulphamethizole, ciprofloxacin, neomycin, norfloxacin and pefloxacin and resistant to metronidazole and nalidixic acid. The isolates from probiotic preparations were most sensitive to ampicillin, amoxycillin and tetracycline, least sensitive to sulphamethizole, norfloxacin, neomycin and ceftriazone and resistant to nalidixic acid and metronidazole. Eight of the multiple drug resistant lactobacilli isolates were studied for the presence of plasmids. Plasmids could be extracted from six isolates of lactobacilli. These plasmids could be responsible for bacteriocin production or for antibiotic resistance of the strains. The lactobacilli need further studies regarding their safety for use in the probiotic preparations.

A total of 665 strains of Escherichia coli isolated in Korea from stools of patients who were treated with antimicrobial drugs, doctors, and students were tested for the drug resistance and distribution of R plasmids. Approximately 25 to 41% of isolates were resistant to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, streptomycin, sulfisemidine and ampicillin(AP), and 9.5% were resistant to kanamycin. Nalidixic acid-resistant strains were only rarely encountered. The prevalence of resistant strains was significantly higher among patients than doctors and students. Strains multiply resistant to four or more drugs were significantly more prevalent among patient isolates than those from doctors and students, while no difference on the incidence of strains resistant to three or less drugs was noted among isolates from the three groups. The persons carrying strains resistant to four or more drugs were more frequently found among patients than doctors and students. Quite large proportions of drug-resistant strains transferred their resistance to drug-sensitive E. coli, with frequent transfer of whole resistance and AP resistance. Strains having higher multiplicity of resistance showed a tendency toward higher incidence of resistance transfer, irrespective of the origins of strains.
A strain capable of growth on naphthalene minimal medium was isolated from soil by selective enrichment culture and identified as Pseudomonas putida N3 according to its morphological and physiological characteristics. The optimum pH and temperature for growth of the isolate were 7.0 and 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. This strain was resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin and streptomycin but. sensitive to tetracycline and rifampicin. Of the naphthalene related compounds, 1, 5-dihydroxynaphthalene was more easily utilized than naphthalene due to its solubility. And catechol was degraded through meta-cleavage pathway. A 110 Kb plasmid which encodes for a single set of enzymes responsible for the degradation of naphthalene was obtained.

Salmonella strains isolated from blood in the Dong-san hospital, Taegu during the period from 1971 to 1986 were studied for species distribution, drug resistance, and R plasmids. The number of strains was 2,527 and all of them were classified into S. typhi and S. paratyphi A. Approximately 300 strains were isolated in the period from 1974 to 1976 and 1978, 268 in 1982, and 204 in 1983, but the numbers isolated in the 1980's have a tendency to decrease as compared with those of the 1970's. S. typhi occupied 85% or more of strains isolated until 1976, but the isolation frequency decreased yearly with some variation, and S. paratyphi A increased gradually from 1974. Only 4 strains of S. paratyphi A were resistant to some drugs, and the resistance was not transferred to E. coli by conjugation. S. typhi resistant to drugs were 15 in 1971 through 1973, 24 in 1974, and 13 in 1975, but afterwards only few resistant strains were isolated. These strains were resistant to two or more drugs; chloramphenicol(Cm), tetracycline(Tc), streptomycin(Sm), sulfisomidine(Su), ampicillin(Ap), and kanamycin(Km) and no strain resistant to other drugs tested was found. Strains resistant to 3 or less drugs didn't transfer the resistance to E. coli by conjugation. There were 15 strains resistant to four or more drugs, and were isolated in years from 1972 to 1976. These strains transferred the resistance to E. coli, and the resistance was considered to be mediated by R plasmids. Transfer frequency was higher at $25^{\circ}C$ than at $37^{\circ}C$ and patterns of transferred resistance were Cm, Tc, Sm, Su; Ap, Km; Cm. R plasmids having markers of Cm, Tc, Sm and Su were classified into Inc H1.

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogene of major concern in livestock products. This study was conducted to test imported and domestic meat sold by retail stores for the presence S. aureus. In addition, the antibiotic susceptibility of any S. aureus found was also evaluated. The overall isolation rate of S. aureus was 20.2% (13.9% in pork and 33.8% in beef) in retail meats. The percentage of imported meats found to contain S. aureus (33.3% in pork and 40.4% in beef) was higher than that of domestic meat (13.0% in pork and 14.7% in beef). In addition, the detection rate of S. aureus was higher in raw material meat than in ready to cook packaged meat. When the antibiotic susceptibility of S. aureus isolated from the meat products was evaluated, ampicillin was found to be the highest (76.5%), followed by penicillin (75.3%), tetracycline (27.1%) and erythromycin (21.2%). Penicillin and tetracycline resistant were detected in 55.6% and 13.3% of the beef isolates, respectively, and 97.5% and 42.5% of the pork isolates, respectively. The tetracycline and erythromycin resistant plasmids of the isolated strain were transferred into S. aureus DPRMM2429 by the filter mating method and the frequencies of transfer was found to be $1.1{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}1.9{\times}10^{-9}$ and $1.2{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}4.0{\times}10^{-8}$ respectively.
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of CTX-M β-lactamase and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes, and the pattern of antibiotic resistance in cefotaxime-resistant gramnegative bacteria. A total 126 gram-negative bacteria were isolated from hospitalized dogs and cats between 2018 and 2019. The most predominant isolates were E. coli (n=41), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=25), Proteus mirabilis (n=14), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=9), Sphingomonas paucimobilis (n=7), and Enterobacter cloacae and Serratia marcescens (respectively, n=5). Cefotaxime-resistant isolates were identified in 26.2% (33 isolates) of 126 gram-negative bacteria. CTX-M type β-lactamase were found in 15 isolates (10 E. coli, 1 Ent, cloacae and 4 K. pneumoniae, respectively). Among the CTX-M producing gram-negative bacteria, CTX-M-1 and CTX-M-9 were detected in 10 (66.7%) and 5 (33.3%) isolates, respectively. While, CTX-M-2 and CTX-M-8 were not found. PMQR genes were detected in 12 (36.4%) isolates (4 E. coli, 2 Ent, cloacae and 6 K. pneumoniae, respectively), and the predominant PMQR gene was aac(6')-lb-cr (n=9), followed by qnrB (n=8) and qnrS (n=1) alone or in combination. qnrA and qepA were not found. Additionally, 9 (60%) of 12 PMQR positive isolates were co-existence with CTX-M-1 or CTX-M-9. CTX-M or PMQR producing isolates showed highly resistance to penicillins (100%), cephalosporins (100~66.7%), monobactams (72.2%), and non-β-lactam antibiotics (94.4~61.1%) such as quinolones, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline and gentamicin. These findings showed CTX-M-1, CTX-M-9, aac(6')-lb-cr and qnrB were highly prevalent in cefotaxime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates from companion animals in our region. Moreover, PMQR genes were closely associated with CTX-M type β-lactamase.
