  • Since the nuclear power plants in Korea have been operated in 1979, the nondestructive testing (NDT) of pressure vessels and/or piping welds plays an important role for maintaining the safety and integrity of the plants. Ultrasonic method is superior to the other NDT method in the viewpoint of the detectability of small flaw and accuracy to determine the locations, sizes, orientations, and shapes. As the service time of the nuclear power plants is increased, the radiation level from the components is getting higher. In order to get more quantitative and reliable results and secure the inspector from the exposure to high radiation level, automation of the ultrasonic equipments has been one of the important research and development(R & D) subject. In this research, it was attempted to visualize the shape of flaws presented inside the specimen using a Modified C-Scan technique. In order to develope Modified C-Scan technique, an automatic ultrasonic scanner and a module to control the scanner were designed and fabricated. IBM-PC/XT was interfaced to the module to control the scanner. Analog signals from the SONIC MARK II were digitized by Analog-Digital Converter(ADC 0800) for Modified C-Scan display. A computer program has been developed and has capability of automatic data acquisition and processing from the digital data, which consist of maximum amplitudes in each gate range and locations. The data from Modified C-Scan results was compared with shape from artificial defects using the developed system. Focal length of focused transducer was measured. The automatic ultrasonic equipment developed through this study is essential for more accurate, reliable, and repeatable ultrasonic experiments. If the scanner are modified to meet to appropriate purposes, it can be applied to automation of ultrasonic examination of nuclear power plants and helpful to the research on ultrasonic characterization of the materials.

  • To keep pace with Industry 4.0, it is imperative for companies to redesign their working environments by adopting robotic automation systems. Automation lines are facilitating the latest cutting-edge technologies, such as 3D vision and industrial robots, to outdo competitors by reducing costs. Considering the nature of the manufacturing industry, a time-saving workflow and smooth linkwork between processes is vital. At Dellics, without any additional new installation in the automation lines, only a few improvements to the working process could raise productivity. Three requirements are the development of gripping technology by utilizing a 3D vision system for the recognition of the material shape and location, research on lighting projectors to target long distances and high illumination, and testing of algorithms/software to improve measurement accuracy and identify products. With some of the functional requisites mentioned above, improved robotic automation systems should provide an improved working environment to maximize overall production efficiency. In this article, the ways in which such a system can become the groundwork for establishing an unmanned working infrastructure are discussed.

  • The IT project for power plants initiated domestically in 2005 necessitates the power equipment facility and the controllers for those to be sufficiently adaptable for automation system for power substations. This implies that the power plants using power equipments must be developed to satisfy the IEC61850 standards. The IEC61850 communication standards that all power equipment and facility and controllers installed in automation system for power substations must follow has had its Parts 3 and Part 4 established as international standard in January 2002 and Part 10 in May 2005, the last to become international standard. Hence all separate parts of the original IEC61850 standard came to be established as international standards. As a consequence, after 2005, in most power substations around the world the IEC61850 standard is being applied and the prominent makers are geared towards manufacturing products to the IEC61850 standard. The IEC61850 is being recognized as an essential standard that must be applied to not only power substations but for automation of power systems and communication systems. In this research, the Gateway device that connects current SCADA system and IEC61580 based system has been domesticated with Korea‘s own technology and extensive testing was carried out in order to obtain confidence in its performance.

  • The process of automation and monitoring in industrial control system involves the use of many types of sensors. A programmable logic controller plays an important role in the automation of the different processes in the power plant system. The major control units are boiler for temperature and pressure, turbine for speed of motor, generator for voltage, conveyer belt for fuel. The power plant units are controlled using microcontrollers and PLCs, but FPGA can be the feasible solution. The paper focused on the design and simulation of hardware chip to monitor boiler, turbine, generator and conveyer belt. The hardware chip of the plant is designed in Xilinx Vivado Simulator 17.4 software using VHDL programming. The methodology includes VHDL code design, simulation, verification and testing on Virtex-5 FPGA hardware. The system has four independent buzzers used to indicate the status of the boiler, generator, turbine motor and conveyer belt in on/off conditions respectively. The GSM is used to display corresponding message on the mobile to know the status of the device in on/off condition. The system is very much helpful for the industries working on plant automation with FPGA hardware integration.

  • Component technologies which enable quickly and effectively to develop software have begun to come into the spotlight since early 1990s. Currently, a number of software development works are performed on the J2EE/EJB environment. However component testing is a very complicated task, in addition it requires more efforts than the previous Java class testing. Thus many developers do not perform sufficiently testing works. In this paper we propose an automatic testing method for EJB components based on the in-container testing strategy and implement a testing tool. Since our method builds automatically the test environment for EJB components, it is possible for developers or testers to save their time and efforts at the test preparation phase. Therefore we are convinced that the reliability of EJB components can be increased through sufficient testings with our method.

  • Various artifacts that are produced as software R&D project progresses contain research plan, research report, software requirements and design descriptions, etc. When conducting a software R&D project, it is necessary to confirm that the developed system has implemented its research requirements well. However, various research results make it difficult to design appropriate tests. So, there is a practical need for us to comprehensively handle the planning, execution, and reporting of software test for finding and verifying information related to the research. In this paper, we propose a useful method for software test process in R&D project which supports model based software testing. The proposed method supports automation of test design and generation of test data by explicitly separating each step of System Under Test (SUT). The method utilizes the various models representing the control flow of the function to extract the information necessary for testing the system. And it supports a systematic testing process based on TMMi and ISO 29119. Finally, we show the validity of the method by implementing a prototype with basic functionality to generate test data from software behavioral models.

  • A communication system through distribution lines was developed for distribution automation. Since all facilities in distrbution systems are connected by distribution lines, economical communication systems can be realized by using these lines as data transmission lines. But it has a problem in transmission reliability bcause of its sensitivity to noise and impeadance. Therefore, to cope with this problem. measurement and analysis of the communication characteristics are made according to the influence of load impeadence change, signal level and noise generated in load. Field tests were carried out at Kyung Ki branch of the KEPCO for half year starting in Feburary 1988.
