  • A fatigue capsule is one of the special capsules to investigate the fatigue characteristics of the nuclear materials during an irradiation test in a research reactor, HANARO. In this study, the performance test and the preliminary fatigue test results by using a cyclic load device newly developed for a fatigue capsule are described. In order to obtain the characteristics such as a realization and a controllability of the periodic wave shape and the relationship between the pressure and the load, a spring and rigid bar specimens are used. The fatigue test for the 316L stainless steel specimen with 1.8mm in diameter and 12.5mm in gage length is also performed under the same conditions as the temperature($550^{\circ}C$) of the specimen during irradiation tests. As a result of the test, the fracture of the specimen occurs at a total of 70,120 cycles(about 12 days), and the displacement in this case is 2.02 mm. It is expected that these results will be used for determining test conditions and a comparison of the in-pile fatigue test results.

  • The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and protects the fuel assembly from the external impact load such as earthquakes. The nonlinear dynamic impact analysis is conducted by using the finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Boundary condition for dynamic analysis is well applied to the test condition. Simulation results also similarly predict the local buckling phenomena. In addition to the buckling parameter, the local buckling cause is examined by both simulation and test method. It is found to correspond well with the test results. Impact tests are also carried out for some specimens of the spacer grid in order to compare the results between the test and the simulation. This test is accomplished by a free fall dummy weight onto the specimen. From this test, only the uppermost and lowermost layers of the multi-cell are buckled, which implies the local buckling at the weakest point of the grid structure.

  • Inverse Gaussian distribution is widely used in applications to analyze and model right-skewed data. To assess the appropriateness of the distribution prior to data analysis, Mudholkar and Tian (2002) proposed an entropy-based test of fit. The test is based on the entropy power fraction(EPF) index suggested by Gokhale (1983). The simulation results report that the power of the entropy-based test is superior compared to other goodness-of-fit tests; however, this observation is based on the small-scale simulation results on the standard exponential, Weibull W(1; 2) and lognormal LN(0:5; 1) distributions. A large-scale simulation should be performed against various alternative distributions to evaluate the power of the entropy-based test; however, the use of a theoretical method is more effective to investigate the powers. In this paper, utilizing the information discrimination(ID) index defined by Ehsan et al. (1995) as a mathematical tool, we scrutinize the power of the entropy-based test. The selected alternative distributions are the gamma, Weibull and lognormal distributions, which are widely used in data analysis as an alternative to inverse Gaussian distribution. The study results are provided and an illustrative example is analyzed.

  • Shear strength of the discontinuity on which the pre-failure of rock slope was occurred during surface excavation was measured through the direct shear test using core samples obtained in-situ. Internal friction angle was increased as the roughness of discontinuity surface(JRC) was increased. Results of the tilt test using core samples of higher JRC also showed very similar trend as those of the direct shear test. When the samples replicated from natural cores were used int he tilt test, results of friction angles showed almost perfect continuation of the residual friction angles from the direct shear test. However, when the gouge material existed in the discontinuity the internal friction angle strongly depended upon the rate of filling thickness to the height of asperity irrespective of the JRC. Based on the results of both direct shear test and tilt test internal friction angle and cohesion of discontinuity, which reflect the in-situ conditions fo pre-sliding failure and also can be used for the optimum design of support system, were assessed. Two kinds of support measures which were expected to increase the stability of rock slope were considered; lowering of slope face angle and installation of rock cable. But, it was found that the first method might lead to more unstable conditions of rock slope when the cohesion of discontinuity plane was negligibly low and in that case the support systems of any kind which could exert actual resisting force were needed to ensure the permanent stability of rock slope.

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate interface performance while using various tack coat materials for asphalt overlay. METHODS : The evaluation was conducted with tracking test, permeability, and interface bond strength. Tracking test was conducted using an image processing technique, to investigate the susceptibility of the tack coat materials. BBS and pull-off test were conducted to evaluate bond strength. The permeability test was conducted to evaluate the effect of tack coat materials. RESULTS : Results reveal that the trackless tack coat material demonstrates less tracking compared to other materials. Moreover, both BBS and pull-off tests can effectively evaluate the bond strength at the interface. RSC-4 was measured less bond strength. Moreover, tack coat prevents water penetration through the surface and aids the extension of the surface life of asphalt pavement. CONCLUSIONS : Trackless tack coat demonstrated a high and consistent bond strength performance. The tack coat types demonstrate marginally different performance as function of curing times. Field applicability was tested based on visual observation. Therefore, these should be considered when trackless tack coat is slightly enhanced the pavement performance based on limited this study results. Finally, it is necessary to allow reasonable time for the tack coat to completely cure.

  • In traditional medicines, Dansam-samul-tang and Samwhang-sasim-tang extracts were known to effects of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. To investigate the safety evaluation of skin, these extracts were measured to skin safety testing such as primary skin irritation test, eye irritation test and skin sensitization test. The results of the primary skin irritation test and eye irritation test in vitro showed that these extracts included in the nonirritating area. Skin sensitization test results by Guinea Pig Maximization (GPMA) indicated that there was no allergy reaction. Therefore, Dansam-samul-tang and Samwhang-sasim-tang extracts were very safe in every safety test of skin. These results suggests that Dansam-samul-tang and Samwhang- sasim-tang extracts in 1 % concentration can be useful cosmetic ingredients.

  • Vibrations related to ride comfort should be considered at the beginning of design stage. In general, ride comfort of human is mainly affected by vibration transmitted from the floor and seat. Also, vibration level is very important regarding with running safety on freight wagon. To ensure ride comfort for passenger coach and vibration level for freight wagon, tests had been repeated by different test procedures with several equipments. With different measuring and evaluations for these results, it took much time to evaluate test results. In this paper, a new evaluation procedure was developed combining several software for ride comfort and vibration level test on railway vehicles. In addition, this developed system is capable of ride comfort test and vibration test by a single integrated system that is capable of immediate reporting the test result. With this developed system, the comfort in a passenger coach and the vibration in a freight car were evaluated. And the simulation results from the proposed system are verified by a field test.

  • Background: Understanding the history of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is important for interpretation of a positive HPV DNA screening test, future work-up and treatment. We investigated the transition of HPV DNA test results in Korean women, and analyzed the association of cytology result with transition type. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed annual HPV DNA test results for 5,274 subjects between January 2005 and December 2012. Each subject had a minimum of five annual tests over the eight-year period. Based on the pattern of results, the transition type for each subject was assigned to one of the following: negative, persistent, latent, transient, and unclassifiable. Associations of cytology results with the HPV DNA transition types, number of positive results, and the durations of positive results were also analyzed. Results: The proportion of abnormal cytology findings decreased in the following order of transition patterns: persistent, latent, transient, and negative. Among transient patterns, a duration of three years or more significantly correlated with cytology results of non-high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL; p<0.001). In the persistent group, duration of five years or more correlated with both non-HSIL and HSIL (p<0.001). Latent group showed no correlation with duration. Irrespective of patterns, having five or more positive results was significantly associated with HSIL (p<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings may contribute to better understanding of HPV infection, interpretation of HPV DNA screening results, and prediction of prognosis according to transition type.

  • The purpose of the present study was to explore the features of Emotional Intelligence(EI) in psychiatric patients in terms of the ability model. EI scores of patients, measured by performance-based test and self-report inventory, was compared. The scores of performance-based test(Emotional Literacy Test) and self-report inventory(Trait Meta-Mmood Scale) of patients(30 with psychotic symptoms, 32 without psychotic symptoms) who had a appropriate literacy were analyzed by means of independent t-test. There was a no significant difference of IQ between two groups. Our results indicated that psychotic group had significantly lower EI in performance-based test than non-psychotic group. In contrast, non-psychotic group showed lower EI in self-report inventory than psychotic group. This inconsistent results might be attributable to the differences in method of measurement. Thus, these results suggested that it may be important to adopt a convergent using of both performance-based test and self-report inventory while assessing EI of patients with psychopathology.

  • Recently the non-destructive test technique which uses the grain boundary etching characteristics owing to the variation of material structures has been proposed. However, during in-serviced GEM test there are a lot of variables such as the changes of temperature and concentration of etching solution, the roughness condition of surface polished etc.. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of these test variables on GEM test results in order to establish a reliable and sensitive of GEM evaluation technique. The experiments are conducted in various solution temperatures, 10$\^{C}$, 15$\^{C}$, 20$\^{C}$, and 25$\^{C}$ and in 70% and 100% concentrations of that, and in various surface roughnesses polished by #800, #2000, and 0.3㎛ alumina powder. Through the test with variables, it is verified that the decrease of temperature and concentration of etching solution and the coarsened surface roughness by not using polishing cloth and powder induce some badly and/or greatly influences on GEM test results like grain boundary etching width(W$\_$GB) and intersecting point ratio(N$\_$i/N$\_$0/). Therefore, to get reliable and good GEM test results, it must be prepared the surface of specimen polished by polishing cloth and 0.3㎛ alumina powder and the saturated picric acid solution having 25$\^{C}$ and be maintained the constant temperature(25$\^{C}$) during GEM test.
