태안해안국립공원 학암포 해안사구 초지생태계의 미기상인자 계절변화 (Seasonal Changes in Micrometeological Factors of a Costal Sand Dune Grassland Ecosystem in Hakampo, Taeanhaean National Park, Korea)

  • 해안사구는 해양생태계에서 내륙생태계로 이행하는 생태 이행대(ecotone)로서 중요한 생태계이다. 이러한 독특한 생태계의 서식지 특성 분석의 일환으로 우리나라에서 사구가 가장 넓게 분포하는 지역인 태안해안국립공원에서 미기상 요인(기온, 지온, 상대습도, 토양수분함량, 강우량 및 일사량, 풍향 및 풍속)의 통년 관측자료를 이용하여 계절변화를 분석하였다. 해안사구 초지생태계에서 미기상 요인의 계절변화는 산림생태계와 비교하여 상대적으로 고온 다습하며 6월과 7월에 집중 강우를 보였다. 토양온도는 기온보다 평균 $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ 높은 상태로 계절변화 하였으며 토양수분함량은 연중 10% 미만으로 매우 건조한 특성을 나타내었다. 또한 2011년 최고 풍속은 156.72m $s^{-1}$(10월 7일)를 기록하였고 현지 측정한 풍향과 기상청 자료는 상이함을 알 수 있었다. 해안사구 초지생태계의 서식지 특성을 더 잘 이해하기 위해서는 이러한 미기상 요인의 통년 장기관측이 필요할 것이다.

  • The gold-spotted pond frog(Pelophylax chosenicus) classified as an Anura in Amphibia is sharply decreasing due to various changes of habitats environment, and designated as IUCN Red List Threatened species(VU; Vulnerable) internationally and domestic endangered species Class-II; therefore, it's in urgent need of the research on habitats restoration of the gold-spotted pond frog in order to prevent its extinction. This study was carried out to verify the effect after restoration by introducing the inhabitation elements deducted by the literature research and a field survey on the habitats for the gold-spotted pond frog in danger of regional extinction in the urban area of Ansan city, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Accordingly, the capacity for bio-species was increased by expanding the area of habitats into $11,845m^2$, and securing the place for hibernation and corridors and discharge within the habitats, etc. As a result of the monitoring the number of individuals increased by 9.5 times as the reproductive success rate of the gold-spotted pond frog got higher, and by virtue of improvement in the habitats, biodiversity increased to 183 species(4 species of amphibians and reptiles, 4 species of mammals, 17 species of birds, 53 species of insects(terrestrial/Benthic), 4 species of fish, and 102 species of plants). It might be possible to verify the restoration effect of the habitats through continuous monitoring, and suggest the restoration model on the habitats for continuously survivable the gold-spotted pond frog in the urban area by deducting the matters to be improved.

榮山江 汽水域의 酵母에 關한 生態學的 硏究 (Ecological Studies on Yeasts in the Waters of the Yeong San River Estuary)

  • 1976年 3月부터 1977年 2月까지 滿 12個月동안 榮山江 汽水域 39個 場所로부터 採水한 156個 water sample로서 酵母의 季節的 分布와 度包配에 따른 이들 酵母의 分布型을 調査하였다. 酵母의 全體 平均値는 100ml당 52에서 487個의 生菌數를 보여주었고 가장 많은 個體數는 春季에 있었고 가장 적은 個體數는 夏季에 있었다. 14屬 83種에 해당하는 933個의 酵母와 한 種의 酵母樣 곰팡이가 分離되었는데 基中 Candida가 29%, Debaryomyces가 17.3%, Rhodotorula가 16%, Saccharomyces가 14%이었고 나머지 다른 屬들은 10%以內이었다. Debaryomyces hansenii와 Rhodotorula glutinis가 全水域에서는 물론 年中 優點種이었고 총 好氣性細菌集團의 크기, 陸水流入量, 그리고 몇가지 지형적 기후적 요소들이 汽水환경에서 酵母의 季節的 分布는 물론 種의 組成을 反映하는 같다. 酵母의 平均數, 種의 多樣性 特히 醱酵性 및 爲菌系形成 母酵들의 數는 감度가 감소함에 따라 增加한 反面 질산염 利用酵母들은 위와 相反된 경향을 보여주었는데 이는 汽水域에서 酵母의 分布型을 認識하는데 감度勾配가 바람직한 看破 요소로서 利用될 수 ㅣ있음을 시사하고 있다.

해안사구생태계의 경관생태분석 (Landscape Ecological Analysis of Coastal Sand Dune Ecosystem in Korea)

  • Coastal sand dune area is the important ecosystem as an ecotone which located between coastal area and terrestrial area. Moreover, it is very complicate landscape that have geomorphological interaction between erosion and accumulation of sand. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the sand dune ecosystem in view point of landscape scale including background landscape affecting origin of sand dune. Landscape ecological approach in the complicate ecosystem already started in developed countries, and it is applied to land management and biodiversity conservation strategies even in national scale. In this paper, landscape ecological analysis using landscape pattern analysis was carried out on 7 study areas (Yellow Sea : Hakampo and Doksan, South Sea : Namyeol and Balpo, East Sea : Hosan, Hupo and Goraebul) in Korean coastal sand dune ecosystem. Landscape elements were composed by 9 elements in these study areas. Major background landscape elements was the forest land and agricultural field. Namyeol (S06) has larger patch landscape compare to other areas. In patch shape indices, Hupo (E10) shows more complicate patch shapes. The high landscape heterogeneity showed in the Doksan sand dune area and that of Hosan. It shows that these areas were composed by various patch types. However, using landscape indices have to use very carefully because several variables have influence to the result such as scale and spatial pattern of study areas. Although landscape analysis through landscape indices shows sometimes difficult to explain the ecosystem, landscape scale approach on ecosystem assessment still useful to interpret in ecological process in large range of habitat.

Food Source Analysis of Rattus norvegicus, a Coinhabitant of Marine Birds in South Korea

  • The Chinese crested tern (Thalasseus bersteini) is one of the most globally endangered species, listed as "Critically Endangered (CE)" on the IUCN Red List, with only approximately 30-49 individuals surviving in the wild. Chinese crested terns were discovered to breed in South Korea for the first time in 2016 while conducting a census on uninhabited islands. The Ministry of Environment has declared the breeding habitat of the Chinese crested terns as "Specified Island" to protect this CE species. However, brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) inhabiting the breeding grounds of the Chinese crested terns and Black-tailed gulls may potentially pose a threat to the breeding of these avian species. Therefore, we conducted a study on the feeding behavior of brown rats involving stable isotope analysis to determine their food sources. Fecal analysis showed that brown rats mainly fed on plants, whereas they scarcely fed on animals, such as insects. In addition, the stable isotope analysis showed that the δ13C values of brown rats, insects, and Indian goosegrasses were approximately -16 to -11‰, whereas the δ13C value of Chinese crested terns that obtained their food from the marine ecosystem was approximately -22 to -18‰. Hence, we conclude that the source of carbon for brown rats on this island is the terrestrial ecosystem. We ruled out the possibility of any direct prey-predator interaction between the brown rat and the Chinese crested tern or Black-tailed gull.

우리나라 논 이용 조류 현황 (Status of Birds Using a Rice Paddy in South Korea)

  • 본 연구에서 문헌 조사를 통하여 우리나라에서 논을 이용하는 조류의 현황을 조사하였다. 논을 이용하는 조류는 논의 본답, 논둑, 저수지 또는 관개 수로에서 번식, 휴식 또는 취식을 하는 조류로 정의하였다. 1980년대 이후부터 출판된 자료에 따르면, 논을 이용하는 조류는 총 47과 279종이었다. 도요 물떼새과(18%), 매, 수리 및 올빼미과의 맹금류(12%), 오리과 (11%)의 조류가 논을 주로 이용하였다. 논 이용 조류 중 절반은 겨울철에 건답을 이용하였으며, 39.4%는 봄이나 가을 또는 여름에 습답을 이용하는 종이었다. 논 의존도는 오리류, 백로류 및 도요류가 높았다. 수면성오리 개체군은 지난 12년 동안 감소한 반면에 두루미는 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 높은 논 의존도를 갖는 멸종위기종은 두루미, 재두루미, 검은목두루미, 흑두루미, 개리, 흰이마기러기와 따오기였다. 논은 다수의 멸종위기종을 포함하여 다양한 조류에게 사계절 내내 중요한 서식지로 제공되고 있다.

Feasibility of seed bank for restoration of salt marsh: a case study around the Gwangyang Bay, southern Korea

  • Salt marsh is an important transitional zone among terrestrial, riverine, and marine ecosystems and is a productive habitat that interacts extensively with adjacent landscape elements of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Nowadays, in addition to various human activities, a variety of natural processes induce changes in salt marshes. This study aims to provide background information to restore disturbed salt marshes and to propose their ecological restoration using seed banks. The study area is a prepared area for the Gwangyang Container Port located in the southern Korea. This area was formed by accumulating mud soils dredged from the bottom of the forward sea. This land was created in a serial process of preparing the Gwangyang container port and the salt marsh was passively restored by seeds buried in mud soil dredged from seabed. As a result of stand ordination based on vegetation data collected from the land, stands were arranged according to tolerance to salinity in the order of $Suaeda$ $maritima$, $Salicornia$ $europaea$, and $Phragmites$ $communis$ communities on the Axis 1. Landscape structure of the projected area was analyzed as well. Edges of the projected area were divided from the marginal waterway by the dike. Four types of vegetation appeared on the dike: $Alnus$ $firma$ plantation, $Robinia$ $pseudoacacia$ plantation, $Lespedeza$ $cyrtobotrya$ plantation, and grassland. In the more internal areas, two types of vegetation sequences appeared: $Aster$ $tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$ $glauca$ community-$Salicornia$ $europaea$ community sequence and $Aster$ $tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$ $maritima$ community-$S.$ $europaea$ community sequence. Mixed community showed the highest species diversity (H' = 0.86) and $S.$ $europaea$ community showed the lowest (H' = 0.0). Evenness is the highest in Mixed community (J' = 2.26) and the lowest in $S.$ $maritime-S.$ $europaea$ community (J' = 0.0). Several plant communities were successfully established on the land created by mud soil dredged from the bottom of Gwangyang Bay. Moreover, community diversity in this area approached a similar level with those from other studies involving natural salt marshes. Therefore, restoration effect based on community diversity obtained in our study can be evaluated as a successful achievement. In this respect, although most salt marshes in Korea and other places worldwide have been destroyed or disturbed by excessive land use, feasibility of seed bank as a restoration tool is greatly expected.

수변 경계종인 쥐방울덩굴의 유전적 다양성 분석 (An analysis of the genetic diversity of a riparian marginal species, Aristolochia contorta)

  • 수변 및 육상 식생의 경계에 서식하는 쥐방울덩굴(Aristolochia contorta)은 국내 취약종인 꼬리명주나비(Sericinus montela) 유충의 유일한 기주식물이라는 점에서 높은 보전가치를 지닌다. 개체군의 장기적인 유지에 있어서 유전적 다양성은 반드시 고려되어야 하며, 이를 위하여 기존 개체군의 유전적 다양성을 파악하는 과정이 선행되어야 한다. 쥐방울덩굴 개체군이 장기적으로 유지되고 있는 네 서식처의 개체군을 대상으로 개체들의 잎을 채집하여 DNA를 추출하였으며, 5개의 무작위 프라이머를 이용한 RAPD-PCR을 수행하여 각 개체군의 유전적 다양성을 비교하고 개체군 간의 유연관계를 파악하였다. 개체군 내 유전적 다양성은 4개 개체군 중 가평 개체군(GP)이 가장 높았으나, 전반적인 유전적 다양성은 다른 종에 비해 낮은 편으로 나타났다(h: 0.0607 ~ 0.1491; I: 0.0819 ~ 0.1759). 또한 가평 개체군의 경우 지리적 거리와 무관하게 다른 개체군들과의 유전적 거리가 큰 편으로 나타났다. 이는 파편화된 서식지와 더불어 낮은 유성생식 비율에서 기인한 것으로 추정된다. 쥐방울덩굴 개체군의 보전을 위해서는 개체군 혼합 식재와 적절한 차광이나 물리적 지지와 같이 쥐방울덩굴의 유성생식 을 촉진하는 환경이 적극적으로 고려되어야 할 것이다.

Selecting Protected Area Using Species Richness

  • We created species richness maps of mammals, birds and plants using "Nnational Ecosystem Survey" data and identified correlations between species richness maps of each taxa. We examine the distribution of species richness of each taxa and calculated conservation priority rank through plotting species-area curves using an additive benefit function in Zonation. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, plant showed high species richness in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan, and mammals showed high species richness at eastern slope of Baekdudaegan in Gangwon province unusually and the species richness of mammals distributed equally except Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. However, birds showed high species richness in the west costal because the area is the major route of winter migratory birds. Second, correlation of each taxa's distribution is not significant. Correlation between mammals and birds is positive but correlations between birds and others are negative. Because mammals inhabit in forest but birds mostly live in coastal wetlands and rivers. Therefore, bird's habitats are not shared with other habitats. Third, the probability of mammals occurrence is very low under 25% in species-area curve, others increase proportionally to area. Birds increase dramatically richness at 10% because bird's habitat is concentrated in coastal wetlands and rivers. Plants increased gently species richness due to large forest in Gangwon province. We can calculate the predicted number of species in curves and plan various conservation strategies using the marginal number of species. Finally, high priority ranks for conservation distributed mainly in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan. When we compared with priority map and terrestrial national parks, the parks were evaluated as high priority ranks. However, the rank of parks away from Baekdudaegan was low. This study has the meaning of selecting conservation priority area using National Ecosystem Survey. In spite of the omission of survey data in national parks and Baekdudaegan, the results were good. Therefore, the priority rank method using species distribution models is useful to selecting protected areas and improving conservation plans. However, it is needed to select protected areas considering various evaluation factors, such as rarity, connectivity, representativeness, focal species and so on because there is a limit to select protected area only using species richness.

활성슬러지로부터 분리된 Miniimons sp. S16 세균의 특성 (Characterization of Miniimonas sp. S16 isolated from activated sludge)

  • 폐수 처리 설비에서 생물학적 요인은 유기물 분해 또는 제거에 필수적인 역할을 수행한다. 본 연구에서는, 폐수처리장의 미생물 기능적 역할을 이해하기 위해, 활성 슬러지 샘플로부터 박테리아 균주를 분리하고 그들의 특성 분석을 시도했다. S16 균주는 대한민국 대전광역시의 폐수처리장의 활성슬러지로 부터 분리되었다. 세포들은 그람음성, 비운동성, 통성 혐기성 그리고 막대모양이였다. S16 균주는 $15{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ (최적 $30^{\circ}C$), 0~9.0% (w/v) NaCl (최적 1.0~2.0%), pH 5.5~9.0 (최적 pH 7.0~7.5)에서 성장하였다. 분자계통학적 분석결과, S16은 Miniimonas 속의 고유종인 Miniimonas areae NBRC $106267^T$ (99.79%, 16S rRNA 유전자 염기서열 유사성)와 가장 밀접한 것으로 나타났다. 해양 미생물로 여겨지는 표준균주 NBRC $106267^T$의 분리 원은 바다 모래이지만 S16 균주는 육상 환경이다. 이는 서식지 전환에 대한 생태학적 의문을 제기할 수 있다. 따라서 비교 유전체 분석은 잠재적인 대사 특성 및 유전체 간소화를 밝히기 위한 가치있는 연구가 될 것이다.
