The chromatographic separation of the MeOH extract of the aerial parts of Solidago virga-aurea var. gigantea $M_{IQ}$ . (Compositae) led to the isolation of six terpenoids and four phenolic compounds, trans-phytol (1), ent-germacra-4(15),5,10(14 )-trien-1$\alpha$-ol (2), $\beta$-amyrin acetate (3), ent-germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-1$\beta$-ol (4), $\beta$-dictyopterol (5), oleanolic acid (6), kaempferol (7), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (8), methyl 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinate (9), and 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid (10). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. Compounds 4, 5, and 10 showed moderate cytotoxicity against five cultured human tumor cell lines in vitro with its E $D_{50}$ values ranging from 1.52∼18.57 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL.L.
Youngia koidzumiana is an endemic plant growing in Mt. Chiri. In our ongoing research for endemic species in Korea, we investigated the chemical constituents from the MeOH extract of Y. koidzumiana whole plants. The MeOH extract was partitioned with hexane, ethyl acetate and BuOH, successively. Four known compounds were isolated from ethyl acetate fraction by repeated column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated by the physicochemical and spectral data as germanicol acetate (1), oleanolic acid (2), brachynereolide (3) and ixerin Y (4).
From the under ground part of Aconitum volubile Pall. (Ranunculaceae),seven nor- or di-terpenoid alkaloids were isolated and identified by NMR spectra and mass spectrum. The alkaloids were three $C_{19}$-norditerpenoid alkaloids such as isotalatizidine, altaconitine and vilmorrianine A, and four $C_{20}$-diterpenoid alkaloids such as 12-epidehydronapelline, 12-epinapelline, songoramine and songorine. Some of the isolated diterpenoid alkaloids were subjected to oxidation reaction with active $MnO_2$ and oxoammonium salt. The results were C-12 oxidation(ketone formation) and N-dealkylation in veatchin-type and decomposition to non-alkaloidal compounds in atisine-type ajaconine.

From the methanol extract of the whole plants of Carpesium macrocephalum $F_R$. et $S_{AV}$., five sesquiterpene lactones (1: carabron, 2: tomentosin, 3: ivalin, 4: 4H-tomentosin, 5: carabrol) and three terpenoids (6: loliolide, 7: vomifoliol, 8: citrusin C) were isolated. The structures and stereochemistry of compounds 1-8 were established on the basis of chemical analysis as well as 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Among them, compounds 2, 4, and 6-8 were isolated for the first time from Carpesium species.
또한 4가지 monoterpenoids(${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\gamma}$-terpinene, terpenolene)를 인위적으로 첨가한 토양에서의 질화작용에 역시 am-monium oxidation 과정은 심히 저해를 받는 반면 nitrite oxidation 과정은 저해를 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

Forest tree species usually takes for long periods to be harvested and cultivated but spearmints are a good model system for woody plant because of reducing and shortening cultivation time. Spearmints are good model plants (Mentha species) for research about terpenoids production and industrial essential oil manufacture. Isopentenyl pyrophosphate isomerase (Iso) and limonene synthase (Limo) are the key enzymes of terpenoid biosynthesis pathway. Transgenic and wild spearmints (Mentha spicata, MS) were cultured in vitro and assessed for the essential oil contents. The content of essential oil of transgenic spearmint also was enhanced slightly depending on the target terpenoid genes. In an attempt to increase productivity of terpenoids further, salt and fungal elicitation strategy was adopted on transgenic Mentha spicata. The salt (800 mM NaCl) as abiotic and two fungi (Botrytis cinerea and Glomerella cingulata) as biotic were used for elicitors. In the absence of salt stress four terpenoids were detected from the spearmint extracts, all of them being monoterpenes. On the other hand, the transgenic (MSIso) extracts contained eleven terpenoids (10 monoterpenes and 1 phenylpropene) while transgenic (MSLimo) extracts contained seven monoterpenes. After 3 days of fungal infection, the resistance indices further increased to 4.38, 3.89 and 2.04 for wild type, MSIso and MSLimo, respectively. The salt and fungal elicitators proved beneficial towards modifying both the terpenoids profile and improvement in the composition of essential oil. These results have important applications for the large-scale production of essential oils and forest biotechnology with respect to spearmint.
Streptococcus mutans plays a virtal role in trigering dental caries establishment due to its ability to synthesize two significant factors. The two factors are organic acids and glucans. The former demineralized dental enamel and the latter mediates the attachment of bacteria to tooth surface. It is believed that demineralization of dental enamel and attachment of bacteria are the crucial events that indicate and develop dental caries. For this reason, we studied the effect of the ethanol extracts of Radix Pulsatillae on the growth and acid production of S. mutans. Ethanol extracts of the Radix Pulsatillae showed concentration dependent inhibitory activity against the growth and acid production of S. mutans, and produced significant inhibition compared to the control groups (p<0.05). The extracts inhibited S. mutans adherence to hydroxyapatite treated with saliva, and cell adherence was repressed by Radix Pulsatillae. the ethanol extract of Radix Pulsatillae showed remarkable inhibition of glucosyltransferase, which synthesizes water insoluble glucan form sucrose. Phytochemical analysis showed Radix Pulsatillae contained major components such as phenolic compounds, glycosides, steroids, terpenoid, and saponin. These results suggest that Radix Pulsatillae may have anti-cariogenic properties, which may be related with major components such as phenolic compounds, glycosides, steroids, terpenoid, and saponin.
Ginkgo biliba has been used for bronchitis and asthma in oriental countries and its leaf extract(GBE) contains 24% ginkgoflavone glycoside and 6% terpenoid. Flavonoids and terpenoids are known to have various antioxidant effects such as scavenging of free radicals and chelation of transtional metals. Antioxidant effect of GBE against 1,2,4-benzenetriol(BT), one of toxic metabolites of benzene, was demonstrated throughbsister chromatid exchange(SCE) analysis, single cell gel electrophoresis(SCGE) analysis, DNA cleavage assay and lipid peroxidation production analysis. The means of SCE frequencies at 10, 25 and 50$\mu$M concentration of BT were 7.72, 8.02, 9.22 respectively. In addition of GBE with concentration of 50, 200 and 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, SCE frequencies were decreased significantly.(p<0.05) According to SCGE analysis, BT induced DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner at concentration of 10 and 50 $\mu$m and the DNA damage induced by BT was significantly protected by GBE(p<0.001). No genotoxicity was observed by GBE treatment alone on DNA cleavage. The effect of BT on lipid peroxidation product, Malondiadehyde(MDA), was increased with concentration of BT(10 and 50 $\mu$M) and reduction in MDA was noted when GBE was added. From above results it is suggested that GBE could protect the cell and DNA from pro-oxidant effect by reactive oxigen species induced by BT.
The chromatographic separation of the MeOH extract of the aerial parts from Aster hispidus (Compositae) led to the isolation of eight compounds. Their structures were established by spectroscopic methods to be ${\beta}-amyrin$ (1), oleanolic acid (2), (2R)-1, 2-O-(9Z, 12Z, $15Z-dioctadecatrienoyl)-3-O-{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl\;glycerol$ (3), trans-phytol (4), 9, 12, 15-octadecatrienoic acid (5), kaempferol (6), 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid (7), 3,4-dicaffeoyl quinic acid (8) and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (9). Compounds 1, $3{\sim}6$ and 9 showed non-specific moderate cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines $(5.44{\sim}23.51\;{\mu}g/ml)$. The other compounds were of marginal activity against tested five human cancer cell lines $(9.05{\sim}>30.0\;{\mu}g/ml)$.
