  • The effect of organic acids on the adsorption of U(VI) onto oxide surfaces ($TiO_2)$(anatase), $SiO_2$(amorphous) and $Al_2O_3$(amorphous)) has been investigated. Two different organic acids, salicylic and picolinic acids, were used. Changes of adsorption ratio of U(VI), which depend on the existence of organic acids in a sample, were measured as a function of pH. Quantities of adsorbed organic acids, which depend on the existence of U(VI) in a sample, were also measured as a function of pH. It is confirmed that the soluble complex formation of U(VI) with organic acids can deteriorate the adsorption of U(VI) onto $TiO_2$ surface. It is noteworthy that salicylic acid does not affect the adsorption of U(VI) onto $SiO_2$ surface, however, picolinic acid enhances the adsorption of U(VI) onto $SiO_2$ surface. The latter effect can be understood by considering the formation of a ternary surface complex on $SiO_2$ surface, which was confirmed by the co-adsorption of picolinic acid with U(VI) and the change in a fluorescence spectra of U(VI) on surface, In the case of $Al_2O_3$, organic acids themselves were largely adsorbed onto a surface without deteriorating the adsorption of U(VI). This would support the possibility of a ternary surface complex formation on the $Al_2O_3$ surface, and an additional spectroscopic study is required.

  • A novel method for the detection of hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution was developed via reaction between $H_2O_2$, trivalent titanium ion ($Ti^{3+}$) and 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR), resulting in a ternary complex with a maximum UV absorbance at 530 nm. The CE detection of $H_2O_2$ was fast, sensitive and cost-effective without pretreatment procedures. $H_2O_2$ was detected within 15 min at 1 to $100{\mu}M$ range with the lowest detection limit at $1.0{\mu}M$. Under the optimized CE conditions, the concentration of $H_2O_2$ in coffee or tea extract was quantitatively determined. Our results show that CE detection of the ternary complex of $H_2O_2-Ti^{3+}$-TAR has potential applications for the detection of $H_2O_2$ in aqueous sources.

  • A PVC membrane electrodes based on Fe(II)-dipyridyl-mefenamic acid ternary complex as ion exchanger were prepared using o-nitrophenyl octyl ether as a plasticizer. The 2,2'-dipyridyl, 4,4'-dipyridyl and 4,4'-dipyridyl-2,2'-dipyridyl were used as dipyridyl derivative ligand. The electrode dxhibits a fast stable and linear response for $10^{-5}-10^{-3}mol/L$ mefenamate with an anionic slope of -55.98, -49.47, -59.35mV/decade in pH 8.9 borate buffer solution respectively. Potentiometric selectivity measurements revealed negligible interferences from aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acid salts.

  • A highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of levodopa based on the formation of a ternary complex with Eu3+ in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It was found that this complex manifests intense fluorescence at 591 and 613 nm with excitation at 372 nm and maximum intensity was obtained at 613 nm. Under the optimum conditions, the enhanced fluorescence intensity was proportional to the concentration of levodopa over the range of 3×10-9-2.5×10-7 mol L-1 with limit of detection (LOD) of 4.37×10-10 mol L-1. The method offers higher sensitivity and selectivity which could be effectively applied for the determination of levodopa in pharmaceutical and biological samples.

  • The spectrophotometric determination method of scandium with eriochrome cyanine R(ECR) and the composition ratio of the complex were investigated in the presence of surfactants. The absorbance increase and red shift of maximum adsorption wavelength of Sc(III)-ECR complex were observed in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB), but those changes were not observed in the sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and Triton X-100. A volume of 5ml of $1{\times}10^{-3}M$ ECR and 10ml of $2{\times}10^{-4}M$ CTMAB are necessary for the determination of $1{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}3.0{\times}10^{-6}M$ Sc(III) at pH 6.5. The apparent molar absorption coefficient of the Sc(III)-ECR-CTMAB, temary complex at 610nm is $5.6{\times}10^5mol^{-1}cm^{-1}L$ and its detection limit is $1.0{\times}10^{-7}M$. The binary complex composition of Sc(III)-ECR is 1:2 and the ternary complex composition of Sc(III)-ECR-CTMAB is 1:3:1.

  • O-Methyltransferases (OMTs), one of the ubiquitous enzymes in plants, bacteria, and humans, catalyze a methyl-transfer reaction using S-adenosylmethionine and a wide range of phenolics as a methyl donor and acceptor, respectively. Substrates for most bacterial OMTs have largely remained elusive, but recent investigation using BcOMT2, an OMT from Bacillus cereus, suggested that ortho-dihydroxyflavonoids could serve as substrates. To elucidate the functional and structural features of BcOMT2, we expressed, and purified BcOMT2, and crystallized an apoenzyme and its ternary complex in the presence of a flavonoid and S-adenosylhomocysteine. Each crystal diffracted to $1.8{\AA}$ with its space group of C2 and $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$, respectively. Structural analysis of apo-BcOMT2 and its ternary complex will provide the structural basis of methyl transfer onto (iso)flavonoids in a regiospecific manner.

  • Inclusion selectivity of a three-dimensional piperazine-ligated cyanocadmate host complex, $[Cd_x(CN)_{2x}\{HN(CH_2CH_2)_2NH\}_y]{\cdot}zG$, has been investigated for benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), o- (O), m- (M), and p-xylene (P) isomers as the aromatic guest molecules. From the binary, ternary and quarternary guest mixtures of E and xylene isomer (X), the order of inclusion selectivity in the host complex is O>E>P>M. From the binary to quinary BTX mixtures, the order of preference in the complex is seen to be B>T>O${\gg}$P>M.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of rare earth elements with XO was investigated in the presence of cetylpyridium chloride(CPC), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide(DTMAB), cetyltrimetylammonium bromide (CTMAB), Triton X-100 at pH 6.2. The complex between XO and rare earth elements in the presence of cationic surfactants was very stable and more sensitive than in the absence of surfactants. The largest absorbance increase was provided by CTMAB, which was therefore chosen for determination of rare earth elements. REE-XO-CTMAB complex has absorption maxima at 618nm and obeys the Beer's law in the range of 0~0.5 ppm. Molar absorptivity was $1.5{\times}10^5mol^{-1}cm^{-1}l$.
