  • Background : Terminology is a good index of reflections in conceptional imaginations, trends and technological advances in the field of their own. The purpose of this study is to compare the similarity and difference of terms in periodontology to evaluate the communicability between South and North Korea. These result may be particularly helpful for making glossary, academic communication and social unity at the time of reunion. Methods : This study was carried out by searching northern periodontology terminologies used in literatures published in North Korea and comparing those terms with the southern terms. The standard northen terms were not able to be distinguished, so the terms used frequently were chosen as the standard northern terms. Results : The South and North both use terms that stem from Chinese characters, but this tendency is stronger in the South. The main differences between the South and North are due to the North Korea's effort in converting terms into the native languages. There are also some differences in inscription of foreign language, spelling and spacing, and so on. Conclusion : The terminology using in South and North Korea in the field of periodontology is somewhat different but both side can be capable of communication. Now the basic efforts in both parts must be taken, such as establishing new terms, in order to relieve these differences.

  • Protection against non-ionizing radiation(NIR) is the subject of an increasing interest but the use of very different concepts depending on the type of radiation or application, makes it rather difficult to compile studies and the data obtained in an uniformity in this field. The main object of the present paper is to summarizes and provide an inventory of concepts, quantities, units and terminology currently used for purposes of NIR protection. Furthermore a systematic classification and comparison of these quantities is given, and in particular the concepts used to quantify exposure limitation and radiation protection standards are summarized and discussed.

  • Scientific documentation is one of the three preconditions for scientific research and its technical application in the industrialization process. To solve the documentation problems on an international level, UNESCO promotes abstracting, standardization of terminology and of scientifc publications, automatic information processing and translating. Moreover, UNESCO has helped to establish since 1950, on the request of interested national governments, 12 documentation centers within the framework of United Nations Technical Assistance Programme by providing experts, fellowships and equipment. Some data on these documentation centers and a comparison of their features should be of interest for all those who wish to set up new documentation centers or to improve already existing ones.

Aside from the science language education delivered in schools, we assumed that supplementary materials are necessary to search and study the meaning of science terminologies for students or the general public. This study aims to investigate whether explanation texts of portal dictionary, Pyojun Korean Dictionary, and science textbooks are easy to read or understand for students and how the students perceive the explanations they present. The results show that science textbooks are easier to read and understand for students than the portal dictionary or Pyojun Korean Dictionary. However, all three materials have very low level of readability compared with students' average level. There definitely are rooms for improvement to increase their readability.

By contrast, the contents of North Korea mostly consisted of the basic knowledge of computer, word-processing excluding the newest contents as Internet or Multimedia. But with the BASIC programming and algorithm for enhancement of the creative solving ability, prospective IT brains had been trained in North Korea. Moreover, due to differences of language policy and country that delivered IT technology, significant differences were found between South and North Korea in IT terminology. For preparing IT education after unification of the Korean Peninsula, both efforts of people who work in the fields of IT and school system in South and North Korea should be taken in order to relieve these differences.

The major findings are summarized as follows: 1. Self-evaluation on Physician's Health Education Activities (1) In consideration of health education services for the patient, the data revealed that 9.9% of the sampled physician wanted to strength public health and preventive medicine lecture in the curricula at medical education. On the other hand, only 1.1% expressed that they wanted to make it short. (2) In consideration of the necessity of health education service, it was shown that 95.6% of physicians agreed to take it into consideration. Self expression for the practice of health education was placed on the 3.15 score when 5 point scale used. (3) To evaluate the degree of an explanation about medical care for the patient, Index score with 4 point scale was employed. The Index score for the first time was shown that scale was placed on 3.23 for 'diagnosis', 3.12 for 'progress of the disease', 3.11 for 'discription of procedure' and 3.02 for 'cause of the disease' respectively. In comparison of the physician's explanation about the status of disease for the first and the second visitors to clinic, they evaluated themselves as giving more detailed explanation for the second visitors rather than the first visitors. 2. Physician's Health Education Services evaluated by patients (1) To evaluate physician-patient communication at beginning time for taking history about disease, the Index score with 5 point scale was employed. The data on taking history have shown that the score placed on 3.07 for those patients who visited the first time and 2.53 for second visitors. And the score about listening from the patients was placed on 3.52 and 3.42 respectively. (2) The Index score with 5 point scale, as used before, was also employed to evaluate medical care services for the patient. The data evaluated by the patients was shown that the score placed on 4.21 for patient treatment in general, 4.58 for physician's credibility, and 3.6 for physician's kindness. However, approximately 80% of those who failed to understand physician's explanation was caused by highly sophisticated medical terminology. It is acknowledged on the whole that the patients who visited the second time have more satisfaction in physician's explanation about their disease, than those who visited the first time. 3.
