  • The K-R design curve is an engineering method of linear-elastic fracture analysis under plane-stress loading conditions. By the way, linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is valid only as long as nonlinear material deformation is confined to a small region surrounding the crack tip. Like general steels, it is virtually impossible to characterize the fracture behavior with LEFM, in many materials. Critical values of J contour integral or crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) give nearly size independent measures of fracture toughness, even for relatively large amounts of crack tip plasticity. Furthermore, the crack tip opening displacement is the only parameter that can be directly measured in the fracture test. On the other. the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) test is similar to CTOD experimentally. Moreover, the test is easier to measure the fracture toughness than other method. The shape of the CTOA curve depends on material fracture behavior and, on the opening configuration of the cracked structure. CTOA parameter describes crack tip conditions in elastic-plastic materials, and it can be used as a fracture criterion effectively. In this paper, CTOA test is performed for steel JS-SS400 hot-rolled thin plates under plane-stress loading conditions. Special experimental apparatuses are used to prevent specimens from buckling and to measure crack tip opening angle for thin compact tension (CT) specimens.

  • The number of the deteriorated bridge has been sharply increased due to the increase in the bridge service period in Korea. Local corrosion problem of structural member can be occurred according to atmospheric corrosion environments based on the installation location of steel bridges. Especially, in case of the plate girder bridge, corrosion damage is concentrated on the web panel and stiffener at girder end. An asymmetrical shear resistant web section in the plate girder bridge can be caused from the local corrosion of the web panel, because local corrosion is not symmetrically occurred to the bridge. In this study, therefore, the shear buckling strength and behavior of a plate girder with asymmetrically corroded web panel was numerically evaluated using FE analysis, which was considering an aspect ratio and corrosion damage level of web panel. The shear buckling strength reduction of an asymmetrical shear resistant web panel was compared and evaluated according to corroded volume ratio for a web panel and for diagonal tension field of a web panel.

  • The PIC design method is assigning different stacking sequences for each shell element through the preliminary FE analysis. In previous study, machine learning was applied to the PIC design method in order to assign the region efficiently, and the training data is labeled by dividing each region into tension, compression, and shear through the preliminary FE analysis results value. However, since buckling is not considered, when buckling occurs, it can't be divided into appropriate loading type. In the present study, it was proposed PIC-NTL (PIC design using novel technique for analyzing load type) which is method for applying a novel technique for analyzing load type considering buckling to the conventional PIC design. The stress triaxiality for each ply were analyzed for buckling analysis, and the representative loading type was designated through the determined loading type within decision area divided into two regions of the same size in the thickness direction of the elements. The input value of the training data and label consisted in coordination of element and representative loading type of each decision area, respectively. A machine learning model was trained through the training data, and the hyperparameters that affect the performance of the machine learning model were tuned to optimal values through Bayesian algorithm. Among the tuned machine learning models, the SVM model showed the highest performance. Most effective stacking sequence were mapped into PIC tube based on trained SVM model. FE analysis results show the design method proposed in this study has superior external loading resistance and energy absorption compared to previous study.

  • In this study, the slip behavior of high-tension bolted joints subjected to compression force is investigated through 3D finite element analysis and experiments. The relation with sliding load, bolt deformation, and failure load are studied with the metal thickness affecting the bolted joint. The post-sliding behavior considering bolt stiffness is presented and compared with the results by finite element and experiments. The finite element model is constructed by solid elements in ABAQUS, in consideration of all the friction effects between metal plates and bolts. The stress-strain relations in the literature are used, and the sliding displacements and axial stresses around the bolt connection are investigated. The flexural buckling of species happened when the plate thickness is less than the bolt diameter. However, the shear failures of bolt occurred in the opposite case.

  • The tension-only braced frames (TOBFs) are widely used as a lateral force resisting system (LFRS) in low-rise steel buildings due to their simplicity and economic advantage. However, the system has poor seismic energy dissipation capacity and pinched hysteresis behavior caused by early buckling of slender bracing members. The main concern in utilizing the TOBF system is the determination of appropriate performance factors for seismic design. A formalized approach to quantify the seismic performance factor (SPF) based on determining an acceptable margin of safety against collapse is introduced by FEMA P695. The methodology is applied in this paper to assess the SPFs of the TOBF systems. For this purpose, a trial value of the R factor was first employed to design and model a set of TOBF archetype structures. Afterwards, the level of safety against collapse provided by the assumed R factor was investigated by using the non-linear analysis procedure of FEMA P695 comprising incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) under a set of prescribed ground motions. It was found that the R factor of 3.0 is appropriate for safe design of TOBFs. Also, the system overstrength factor (Ω0) was estimated as 2.0 by performing non-linear static analyses.

  • The object of this paper is to determine appropriateness for use of high-strength tensile bar as a tension web member. The gap K-joint of tensile bar types were compared with gap K-joint of square hollow section (SHS) types. For the same width-to-thickness ratio ($2{\gamma}=33.3$ ), tests were performed on four specimens of the SHS type and eight specimens of the tensile bar type. The comparison of capacity with the experimental results showed a capacity of the SHS type joint to be higher than that of the tensile bartype joint for the same brace-to-chord width ratio. Moreover, the capacity of the SHS type joints increased proportionally to the width ratio ${\beta}$), while tensile bar type joints increased as the tension width ratio (${\beta}2$). In failure mode, SHS-type specimens showed local buckling of the compression brace and plastic failure was observed between the tension brace and chord face, and with the tensile bar type specimens there appeared punching shear failure of the chord face at the toe of the connection plate. It is, therefore, concluded that width-to-thickness ratio should be lower than that of the hollow-section type and the relation between tension and compression width ratio should be considered.

  • In this research, a numerical model is developed for analysis of buried pipelines considering longitudinal permanent ground deformation(PGD) due to liquefaction induced lateral spreading. Buried pipelines and surrounding soil are medeled as continuous pipelines using the beam elements and a series of elasto-plastic springs uniformly distributed along the pipelines, respectively. Idealized various PGD patte군 based on the observation of PGD are used as a loading configuration and the length of the lateral spread zone is considered as a loading parameter. Numerical results are verified with other research results and efficient applicability of developed procedure is shown. Analyses are performed by varying different parameters such as PGD pattern, pipe diameter and pipe thickness. Results show that response of buried pipelines are more affected by pipe thickness than pipe diameter. Finally, the critical length of the lateral spread zone and the critical magnitude of PGD which cause yielding, local buckling or tension failure are proposed for the steel pipe which are normally used in Korea.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study comparative of dynamic instability characteristic of Geiger-typed cable dome structures by load condition, which is well-known among the cable dome structures that are the lightweight hybrid structure using compression and tension element continuously. Dynamic buckling process in the phase plane is very important thing for understanding why unstable phenomena are sensitively originated in nonlinear dynamic by various initial conditions. But there is no paper for the dynamic instability of hybrid cable dome by Sinusoidal Excitations, many papers which deal with the dynamic instability for shell-structures under the step load have been published. As a result of Geiger-typed cable dome, which shows chaotic behavior in dynamic nonlinear analysis with initial imperfection.

  • The primary purpose of using bracings is to improve tile lateral rigidity of main structural system, i.e., columns and beams, by reinforcing them with much smaller members. Conventional design methods consider bracings as tension-only mambers, since difficulties arise in the analysis to consider the P - effects and post-buckling behaviour of the bracing members. This is particulary true for X-bracings. Recently, however, both analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the more precise and real behaviour of bracing members, especially for the nonlinear un plastic behaviour under cyclic loads. In this study, an analytical model is proposed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of steel bracing members subjected to cyclic loads. Results of tile analysis were compared with previous experimental results, and good agreements were obtained between these results.

  • A simple method of on-line stiffness measurement using the wrinkling behavior of paper web between rollers was developed. The theory and calculating equation were presented, and the theoretical maximum error associated with the equation was also presented. We called the stiffness measured by Taber tester as 'Taber stiffness', and by wrinkling behavior as 'wrinkle stiffness', respectively, for comparison. By using this method, on-line complete control of paper stiffness will be possible in near future. Special care about shear wrinkle and paper dimensional effects were addressed.
